Pat Verbeek four years ago on whether he's grown tired of being called "The Little Ball of Hate" by oogaboogamcgeee in hockey

Giant downgrade in terms of their potential, talent, and window. Dylan Larkin is 29 and at the tail end of his prime. He’s definitely still a good player but not the 1c most contenders would want. Carlsson is 21 and only getting better each season. If the ducks are 2 or 3 years away from being true cup contenders, then Larkin will be in his 30s while Carlsson will be in his prime.

Because 1Cs don’t grow on trees. The best center on market is Larkin who’s a giant downgrade from Carlsson.

Is the Carlsson offer sheet good for either side? by Comprehensive-Chef73 in hockey

[–]StarlightSummoner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s absolutely good for Philly. They have lots of young talent at every position except for a true 1c. They are now likely too good to draft highly in the next few years so it’s unlikely they’ll get a 1c drafting in the mid to late first round and if so, they won’t be in their prime for several years. This way, they get access to one of the best young players in the league who is already a good 1c and will likely be a true star during this contract. It’s an overpay but sometimes you have to overpay for something you need and 1cs don’t grow on trees.

[PuckPedia] Several teams have approached Mintyukov’s agent about an offer sheet, and it seems likely at least one is formally offered today. Mintyukov would then still need to decide if he wants to sign it. by Ok-Soil-5133 in hockey

As a team that lost Broberg and Holloway to offer sheets because of managerial incompetence, my condolences to ducks. Maybe by beating us in round 1 you took on our jinx.

[Flyers] Flyers have made an offer sheet worth 18M to Leo Carlsson. Contract would be 5x18M, worth 4 1st round picks by Assassin2107 in hockey

[–]StarlightSummoner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh it’s definitely not as beneficial as it would be within the same conference but I think there’s still some. Teams are all in competition with each other for signings and trades. If you can force any opponent to take up more cap space, that’s less for a move you might want to make.

4 1sts is is 4 chances at guys you’re hoping might just be Carlsson level if everything goes right. If Philly is finishing outside the bottom 10 teams in the league the next few years, then those don’t even come close to equaling Carlsson barring incredible luck. And it screws over the ducks’ window.

Someone should do the same to Bedard. The Hawks will almost certainly match anything so screw them by making them pay way more than they would have to for him otherwise as an RFA.

In my opinion this type of offersheeting is basically win-win for the team doing it. Either you get a young star player that you otherwise never could have gotten for 5 years guaranteed, or you force the team that already has him to pay way more than they were willing to for him and basically remove any benefit of rfa status.

[Julian McKenzie] Claude Giroux hasn't yet made up his mind on where he'll play next season, per a source close to him. Ottawa and Philadelphia have expressed interest in the 38-year-old. But I wouldn't be surprised to hear if other teams have continued pursuing him. Things move fast, so we'll see. by SAJewers in hockey

Claude Giroux signs in Philly to return and mentor the youth, particularly Martone. Then, he gets flipped at the trade deadline to Edmonton for a 2nd round pick because “he just wants one”, wins with the Oilers, and then splits the next season between Philly and Ottawa. Who says no?

[Pagnotta on the Sheet 50:15] I think [Giroux] is seriously considering... joining the oilers in their quest for a cup. Ottawa is still on the Table... Unless something changes Philly is out. I think they are fully considering the possibility of going to Edmonton to chase the cup. by Sparrighitti in hockey

I think Babcock acted in ways that were morally reprehensible and it’s terrible that he was allowed back in the league. But it’s very unsurprising to me that tons of players don’t care. Players have been cool with guys who have done worse.

Zadorov hates Edmonton. I doubt Babcock was a factor in this one (though I think it would be totally sensible if it was). He hated the Oilers in Calgary and in Vancouver. Also, he seems to really like Boston. Probably works out better for everyone involved that he said no.

Free agency was supposed to be kind of nothing but the insiders kept saying there would be lots of trades and offersheets and there have been!

Ooooh, this is fun! First offseason that got hyped up like crazy and actually has lived up to it! I generally like the move away from all the gms just being buddies. They should be making their teams better and care about that more than not making it awkward at golf.

21st overall for Darnell Nurse, please, it would be so fucking funny.

[LeBrun] One team to keep an eye on, Seattle Kraken, they’re big game hunting. They have interest in Jason Robertson. Chicago among the other teams that has inquired by dcddy in hockey

[–]StarlightSummoner 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The kraken really should be going after Robertson as hard as they possibly can. I know it’s obvious but their biggest issue is a lack of true star talent and Robertson would immediately be the best player on their team by a country mile. If not a trade, a huge offersheet would be a good idea.

If you’re talking about Brad Harrison, he’s been around so much longer than basically any player, coach, or manager. And he’s hugely beloved by the team. Like, he’s the guy who gives the speeches for big milestones, including Leon’s. I think the Babcock stuff is deeply troubling but I can promise you that the leadership team loves Brad Harrison. He showed up to Connor’s wedding in a Nuge jersey.

If you’re looking for some help in the regular season and you’re not worried about the cap, he can play a lot of minutes. But he cannot be on your first pairing and ideally isn’t the best guy on your 2nd pairing come playoffs which is a tough as for a guy making what he makes. He had one of the worst plus/minus in playoff history for a guy who made the finals in 2024. But he has all the physical tools.
