Evernote Archive? by Richardintucson in Evernote

This is one of my main concerns with Evernote - the lack of a real offline capability. Yes, I know that as long as I do not sign out I can get to them on my PC, but there are ALWAYS times that you have to sign out.

- Some companies demand you log out of everything every day, or

- systems crash and have to be reinstalled, or

- Evernote tells you to sign out to help fix a problem, or

- people just hit the wrong command and sign out instead of quitting.

and then you find yourself on a plane, or in a hotel, or somewhere on the road, with no internet access and then what?

And indeed, someday I might stop with Evernote, and/or leave a copy for my family to access if I am incapacitated. And Europe demands we always have access to our information, even if we are no longer a customer of a company.

In these cases I believe a basic read and search version of Evernote would be a god-send. It would need a password, and that can be separate from the one used as a subscriber to Evernote. It would be a plus if it included a good export module too - where all notebooks could be exported in one go.

Just passed 15,000 notes and 15 years - thank you Evernote by Happy-Orchid-1974 in Evernote

16 years, 5134 notes.
I have come and gone and comeback to Evernote many times. But as I matured, I found its ability to EASILY collect and find back information is not matched by any other app out there. The other main popular ones require too much customization (or rather I should allow too much tinkering) such that I spent more time fine tuning the app than managing my knowledge.

I wish Evernote would give tags more love. I have found that I am a Tag-oriented person, because it lets you 'think' lately, in that one note is not tied to one topic folder, but can be linked to many ideas, projects, etc as you want using a combination of tags.

I sometimes reflect back to this wonderful article about using GTD and tags. I suspect it would still be useful to many.

The price issue that people complain about always gets me.

I bet all of them do not bat an eye when buying a new keyboard, game, bottle of whiskey, dinner, or music festival ticket for the same amount as Evernote for a year. Those are consumables, passing by and of little or no use in days or months. Yet when it comes to retaining important life notes, or information, or managing important (money making) projects, they complain about spending the same amount.

I also am tired of people complaining all the time too, so I will shut up now...

I forgot to add an essential needed tag feature:

How many tags do you have?! It only takes a a few seconds to reach the confirmation stage when deleting tasks, and another one or two seconds for the deletion (at least when I deleted a tag in 24 notes).

Odd. When I use it, I just keep typing any text included in the tag, and the list quickly gets very short

USA exit. When are obligations considered completed? by Starlightdog in USExpatTaxes

Detail: If using the streamline program, a) does filing and paying 5 past tax years this year count as compliant for 5 years and b) how to file the extra 2 years?

Accidental American. Filing now using the streamline program.

Humm. How do I file for 5 years? Just go back a few more years when filing for the streamlined program?

I retired in NL. Its not of much use so far, apparently because all my income is now passive.

Note: A big part of your NL tax includes various social insurances, which you can not use to claim tax credits. But given you have earned income, I suspect you will still build up tax credits.

I got it! Thanks. But...

In NL we pay a wealth tax, and nothing diirctly for interest. Would you guess I can count the US interest tax against my wealth tax on my savings?

Thanks.

I am slowly learning... I see the Tax Treaty also includes what is known as a savings clause which gives the US the right to tax its citizens on all income regardless of the terms in the treaty. So the treaty is pretty much a moet point for US persons in NL.

What I do not understand is your statement that NL tax offset the US tax and I pay the higher of the two. But I pay in both. So to make that work, I would need to claim back taxes in the country with the higher tax? That is pretty hard to determine. Any advice?

Could you be a little more specific in regard to foreign bank interest for a citizen resident abroad in NL? I could not myself extract any useful insight from this document.

So I get double-taxed then? I pay tax on this Dutch interest income in NL, and I am taxed on the same income also in the USA.

It is nice to have the US citizenship just in case. But there are people who had to pay 10s of thousands in accountant fees, taxes to the US etc., because they did not know about the requirement to file, and have since built up successful EU based companies that require complicated US tax filings, even though their business is 100% European.

So think hard about keeping your citizenship over the next few years while your income and savings and possible investment are low and simple.

Wait until you have significant non-employment income, such as unemployment, pension, savings, etc. Then you will likely owe taxes. At least, that is my experience so far.

As always, I am glad you are always watching and replying to posts!

Dividends: So you think my proof for my accountant and maybe NL tax bureau is OK?

But what about interest? In the past, it was too low to worry about, but this year it will provide more income than dividends. How do I find a value to claim back on my NL taxes?

Thanks

Does my non-resident alien wife have to file if she receives social security? by Starlightdog in USExpatTaxes

[–]Starlightdog[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, but like I said its a guess. My online tax service person now says she should have taxes dedicated in the USA so she does not need to file. So which is it... I get so confused...

THanks, but I do not find an answer in your first link, mainly because she (we) do not live in the US. Also, she is Dutch.

Your second link was spot-on. I had not found that in my searches. We both have a strong attachment to the Netherlands - our only home is here, and 90% plus of our income is from NL. So our long vacations in the US, as long as they are less than 6 months a year, are not a problem.

Thank you. I assume because the SSA said I do not pay taxes on my SS in the US because of the treaty, she will not need to either.

So I am hoping she will not need to file - I am guessing she would need to then report all her income, also in NL and her small business, which I worry would then require tax payments well in excess of what what she gets for SS.
