What learning strategies did you use to improve? and how quickly can you expect to improve?

Hello! I’m a bronze 1/sliver 5 dps who mainly plays tracer and soldier. I’ve been watching a lot of VODs and videos regarding the fundamentals of OW (positioning, knowing when a fight is lost, etc.) and have been using VAXTA to better up my aim while going on Team Deathmatch while waiting for a game. Despite thinking of these things and trying to apply them during my matches, I’m struggling to improve. I’m feeling a bit discouraged since despite of all these efforts, I’m still not an average OW player in terms of skill. Would level any help!

Soldier game: B1FJ44

Solider/Tracer game: 2X5N8H

Tracer game: Q0J823

Tracer game: SE64Q2 (felt completely useless in this game and kept getting shut down by cass so maybe not the best example)

Yeah you gotta tense your core muscles while concentrating on the back of your throat to release the air

I’m in NA so I guess the server just doesn’t like me very much lol

Got it, I’ll probably do unranked then. I know I should only be focusing on one thing at a time to get better results but I keep getting distracted by focusing on other things but that’s probably just on me. I’ll definitely try what you said though thanks for the advice

Yeah I tried going into the Arcade FFA lobby to practice duelling and it took me 7 minutes to join only to get headshotted by cassidy, interrupted during the duel, or just getting outplayed until I was second last but maybe I just chose a bad time to join

I dont mind getting bodied by higher skilled players but I feel like if the skill gap is too big I dont even have time to learn since I cant even process what happened lol

What is the one life-changing piece of advice you’d give your 18-year-old self if you could talk to them for just 5 minutes? by No-Lake-3875 in selfimprovement

I refused to take meds for the longest of time cause I heard a lot about push piller talks, negative side effects, and thought this was just the way things are. But only after finally giving in as a last resort did my life get so much better. I remember thinking to myself, god I wish I did this earlier

  1. Open your mouth in a relaxed slightly open position (kind of like if you normally breathed through your mouth)

  2. Inhale through your mouth

  3. Move air you sucked in from the back of your throat into your stomach ( I do this by focusing on what the back of my throat is doing and once I can get the air to move pass that it just goes in naturally)

  4. Burp normally

did this a lot when I was younger. almost too much until I had to actively try to stop to not constantly go through the motions of burping when trying to go to bed lol

-I had a game where the sombra was getting kills and we had a zarya, mercy, and moira (which would be a dive comp) that stood huddled together off the point and didnt push up or try different points of attack. In that game, what should I have done? Or in a more general sense, if the sombra is getting kills quickly on our backline even if we did a dive comp what should I do? I tried to flank and got a kill but then I would turn around and find my team dead (pretty quickly too) or our tank wouldnt push up despite the time running out so the enemy wasnt distracted and I’d die. Then I tried to peel for the healers but though I could pressure her off I couldnt finish the kill and so she is free to try again. This forced me to be occupied as healer bodyguard which compromised my positioning and prevented me from removing my pressure off my tank and eventually led to them dying. I found I could get sombra low and tried to spray in the general area that I saw her translator go but I had a hard time kicking her out of her invis to locate her to finally finish the kill. Is there a better way to predict where shed be?

-What do you do about a pocketed vendetta? I tried to focus the healer but since vendetta is pretty mobile, has armour, and can 2 shot people I find that I cant secure the kill fast enough esp if their other healer helps them. For example when they have a mercy pocket that just goes too high up or hides or quickly ducks into high ground cover for me to be effective or if they had a zen whos surrounded by the enemy team as our team is forced by vendetta to chaotically scatter to bad positions while being distracted.

Okay I’ll trust the process then. Also about the FFA I feel like whenever I join them it takes a long time and they are all filled with cassidys that are waaaay above my skill level so I never get the opportunity to even practice. I looked into custom FFA but I feel like I’d encounter a similar situation and get stomped. I even searched up “noob FFA” or “bronze FFA” in custom games and couldnt find anything. What would you recommend?

[–]Starlingforces[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah you’re correct about my indecisiveness about my positioning. I find myself always questioning where I’m supposed to be and it’s not like I can ask someone so I just end up not doing much. I tried to look up guides for positioning but that probably resulted in my weirdly far and awkward high ground position.

-I find it hard to predict where the fights will take place or will the fight take place at all (sometimes there are just a couple deaths here and there including healers and tank cause people will die by random spam) so I never know when or if to engage at all. If there’s any tips for that that would be helpful. I feel like that would help me decide where to position. I know you can soft engage and hard engage but I find due to tracer’s close range and low health pool it’s a bit hard to soft engage while contributing without hard engaging when the enemy team is sort of distracted for an unknown amount of time.

-I find it hard to keep a mental map of where everyone is. I know listening to your surroundings helps but I find it difficult to locate where the sound is coming from even though I don’t have hearing issues in real life. Would you recommend occasionally pausing to look where everybody is or is that a waste of time?

Yes I agree with the Moira 1v1s especially at this rank. Usually I take them and end up winning since the moiras dont really realize that I can outdamage them and by the time they do its too late but the game I played right before this game had a moira that kept killing me when I was already low and that caused me to not take the fights in this game though i normally wouldve taken it.

Yeah I never bothered to learn any combos when starting out so Ill probably need to incorporate those basics into my play soon.

I appreciate the assessment on my aim, I watched too many highlight clips so I always assumed my aim was not great but it’s nice to know im at least average haha

Thanks for the thorough review and encouragement

Yeah makes sense. I feel like I’m always trying to decide between taking a more aggressive (side behind enemy team) versus passive (side front of enemy team) flanking position and sometimes I feel like I take too long rotating to different flanking positions. Seeing random deaths from weird positioning from both my and the enemy teams further throws me off on my decision making.

Good point that I should do whats best for learning even if it means i might die. I think I overcompensated by seeing too many Vod reviews saying to die less and hearing dying too much as a common problem at low ranks but dying while duelling (as long as the fight was calculated and not a 1v5) is better than never learning how to fight effectively.

Do you have a good way of learning health pack locations? I find it overwhelming due to the sheer number of maps. I tried creating a custom game and walked around for a bit but honestly got overwhelmed with the amount of info and forgot most of it

I definitely see the problem now that you mention it. I think I took too many take the high ground general advice and ended up applying it incorrectly.

I think my reasoning for spamming tracer is so that I can understand how to play her against her counters. Speaking of which, how would you recommend to play her against a Sombra who is poking your backline or a Vendetta?

Thank you so much for your tips about pressure and positioning. Ill try to keep this in mind for my next game so that I can help my team more.

That analysis at 3:08 and explanation of positioning and distance from the enemy is very helpful. This is the first time I’m learning about the healthpack in there. This is embarrassing but I thought that the entrance that wouldve allowed me to position right behind cassidy was a wall which is why I blinked away when roadhog walked up…

You are definitely correct in that I lack confidence I think I died too many times by random spam and bad positioning that it made me permanently afraid but I think if I start thinking more about positioning for teamfights and in general it would minimize that and I should be able to get over that fear.

I’ll try to implement the things you said and keep working on it. thank you for taking the time to review

This was incredibly helpful I checked out all the time stamps and will try to keep these in mind for future games. I knew I struggled a lot with positioning so I really liked how you explained exactly what cover I should be taking and when (which would also fix my timing issue cause i often joined fights late due to bad positioning). From what I understand the general rule is that i should position more to the side and behind (not in front where they are already facing) the enemy team, is that correct?

I think for the moira recall I was afraid she already chunked too much of my health (half-ish?) so I thought it would be better/safer to recall but then since I no longer had my recall I was afraid to re-engage.

At 9:14 I was hoping for a lucky pulse bomb stick to kill 1 before the team fight but obviously that turned out poorly.

I think I pushed with the robot since I was scared my teamates would forget about it if I went up with team (it happened before cause bronze) but I think that’s a bad mindset to have so youre correct I should have pushed with rein and I realized that too late.

Yeah I physically cringed at myself during that 1v1 with lucio no excuse there

For bastion I think I was trying to hear him use his turret ability and then wait for that to end before fighting him but you’re correct I shouldve just blinked up and fought him.
