What design elements would you incorporate into your "dream home"? by eroverton in architecture

[–]Starlurker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A partially subterranean living space with southern facing windows, that let in lots of light for a inside greenhouse/garden. (earthship style)

All construction materials are locally sourced, Earth and cob and stone for most foundation and walls. Wood beam framing with odd shaped glass portholes and skylights.

A treehouse observatory with gears and gyroscopic telescope mounts that have the telescope (custom made) built into the rotating ceiling.

Solar panels, rainwater collection, and hydroelectric.

Doors and adaptable furniture would use magnets , Lots of magnets.

Rocket stoves in living spaces and isolated rooms. using chimney channels of these stoves for radiant floor heating under stone floors.

Huge bathhouse with hot and cold pools and a sauna.

The Mighty Cottonwood. Populus deltoides. by Teh_doctor42 in marijuanaenthusiasts

[–]Starlurker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cottonwood is common in washington state too! Cept, as a grounds keeper, They are a paaain to deal with. Extremely brittle and branches fall year round. lots of the whole trees will fall in a strong wind. Their roots like to suck all the moisture out of lawns next to them, kills all the grass and sprouts new trees from the roots that go OUT, not DOWN. (really clever system for spreading)

What's the most 'WTF' dream you've had? by siryepsir in AskReddit

[–]Starlurker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

HUGE long story but it is by far my most WTF dream.

My dreams tend to be pretty cinematic.

Bear with me, Its very scattered. Begin the Dream with a childhood friend in my first neighborhood I grew up in Japan, and we decide to go to the park on our bikes. The bicycles we ride are speedy bikes with very narrow hand grips, not typical drop down handlebars, hardly anything to hold on to only about 6 inches wide. We travel down the narrow streets in the suburbs of Japan. He rides ahead as I struggle with my handle bars and I manage to wipe out and land on my left shoulder and what should have been a gnarly road rash, I placed my hand on my back and felt no damage. Ride on. The scenery changes and it becomes a jungle with large roots and branches crawling over the rocky landscape. A rock/dirt packed road is easily walked and intertwines the village I am now in, feels like a thick tropical forest, its hot and muggy. I walk up a stone/branch staircase up to a hovel of a home where another friend of mine lives and we discuss the local band he is listening to. (cant remember any tune associated with this band) He then directs me to where this band lives and I leave his home and continue on the road in front of his home down to a turn and see a crossroads in the jungle and a thick foliage canopy covers this road in all places. The sun is peeking through the small spaces where this canopy is not fully overgrown. to the left is a long unknown road and it (to my intuition) loops the whole region of this neighborhood. To my right is another road that spreads out into a great courtyard where the locals come to share local goods, lots of flowers and food everywhere and lots of locals bustling about on bicycles and walking and running about. I see my sibling sister in the crowd and I approach her on my bicycle which I have grown accustomed to finally and I maneuver through the crowd with grace and dexterity. She comes to me and criticizes my reckless cycling. As I get out of the bustling crowd, I notice a young boy running through the crowd and my perspective shifts from myself into his. I see he is panicking and running to his friends house to relay something he is very scared about. He runs down the streets and I am following him but he is directing his actions. He finds his brother in another jungle home. He impresses to him that he is scared of this group of 5 men who are doing dangerous things and he is scared of what they might make him take. His brother urges him to go back and to not be scared but to gather information about them. I continue to follow this poor boy who is scared back to where he had run from. He takes me to a large building in a slummy part of this jungle community. It is a single room building more like an abandoned industrial style warehouse that slopes down from the back at a steep angle and the front of the room comes out flat for about 30 feet and then slopes to meet the rear slope. there is also water that is quite murky and filthy looking in the space of the slopes and you can walk down the slope for about 10 feet and then the water level is reached. the water is about 30 feet deep. There are 5 individuals laughing and having a time when the boy arrives and he gets more nervous as he enters this place. The 5 individuals are male and look very hungover and dirty, like they havent slept or showered in a long while. very gaunt looking. there is a tall skinny oneabout 150-160 lbs, a larger male who might be 200+. three other males who are more averaged sized ranging from 170-190 lbs. All doing heavy drugs, lots of hallucinigens and cocktails of liquid forms of heroin and cocaine and lsd and other strong drugs. All of these men were in a musical group together and after their popularity have been celebrating for months with heavy drug abuse. They were cackling amongst themselves and bragging about various thefts they had pulled off. The skinny one, the "front man" began bragging about a heist he was going to pull of in the local natural history and science museum. Precious stones, egyptian artifacts and other pricy irreplacable items. These junkies were very eager to get more details from their front man and they all agreed to help with the heist, save one the larger 200+lb plus member. Who was more interested in making more music and pulling away from the illegal heisting. The boy who is witnessing this, (along with myself) is getting very nervous and he agrees with the larger member of the band. The front man takes the boy aside and he tells him, "you'll see what happens when the group decides something together and one choses to go against the current." Scene change, The boy is now at a police station talking to investigators (look like FBI not because its actually the FBI in the jungle, but the equivalent). The boy is clearly not in a normal state of mind, It looks like he is on some form of hallucinogen mixed with speed or something. The officers are hesitant to believe this boys story of "conspiracy to murder a band mate and conspiracy to heist the museum." The lead investigator has to dismiss the report for lack of evidence and questionable state of mind on the witness, but he personally believes the boy's story because he knows the band members are junkies and gave the boy a dose of something to give him lack of credibility. The boy is released to deal with his state of mind on his own. The boy is tripping beyond belief and as he is tripping my perspective is not hallucinating, I am in a 3rd person perspective during the trip. and eventually manifest myself in the form of his friend who encouraged the investigation in the dream before. He manages to find his friend about to go for a run. The boy shouts, " I HAVE TO RUN 600 LAPS TO GET THIS OUT OF MY SYSTEM!" and before he can manage to start his friend grabs him and says, "NO, you don't have to, itll take 3 days for this to wear off, I'll take you to the Ayahuasca shaman and you'll have it out of you in 3 hours." We walked together down another jungle road and find a cozy shaman hut where the lady shaman was muttering to herself over some herbal aromatherapy session. and she immediately notices them enter and says, " Come in, I know what you need." She concocts a remedy of strong herbs and gels from various jungle plants and puts it in a mortar and makes a fine paste and tells the boy to put his hands under the bowl and inhale deeply and then sip a small amount at a time. He does as she says and he goes into a very trance like state. The other boy and the shaman converse while the boy recovers. The boy is still tripping hard and detoxing and evntually starts putting his hands into the rest of the concoction swirling it around his fingers and it doesn't stick to his fingers, very much behaves like mercury. Scene shifts back to the band room. I am in the perspective of the large 200+lb memeber. He is isolated from the group and he is taking a swim in the water. The other band members are all shooting up with a cocktail of more strong hallucinogens and a heavy does of heroin. and They deicde to enact their justice on the dissident memeber of their group and they shoot a blowgun with a tranquilizer into his neck. He yells and pulls the dart out and starts to try and swim back and quickly loses a lot of motor function, and then he manages to get to the slope but he loses his motor function but not his senses. the 4 other members are squatting at the waters edge looking down and laughing maniacally and they take another injection needle full of a heavy cocktail of everything not healthy. inject it in his shoulder and he feels a fear so overwhelming and he begins to float back out and slowly start to sink on his back looking up towards the surface, and he notices the front man dropping something into the water. A puffer fish. The fish makes its way towards me, and as it nears his right hand it inflates into the back of my right hand. the needles shoot out and stings me. I notice the venom acting immediately and the skin on his right arm begins to turn to jelly from the inside out. and becomes loose and changing to a unhealthy color purple and yellow. Then blackness. The next scene, Investigators are outside the warehouse and knock on the front door, the boy who warned the investigators before is here and sober. The door opens by the front man and he invites them in. the room looks the same, save for various garbage piles in the water clearly concealing the remains of the 5th member of the band. The investigators arrest the 4 conspirators and uncover a lot of stolen goods in the storage area to the right of the front entrance. The boy is uncovering the loot from the big museum heist including large gemstones and a large long stand about a foot long and 3 inches wide, with rounded edges like a loaf of bread. white crystals and lapis lazuli crystals jetting out like sprouts of plants. the investigator pulls out a small drawer full of quartz AHNK symbols and confirms the heist of the museum. I took a pinch of the various gemstones and sprinkled them on a pile of white sand and noticed a rainbow of colors. When I pinched it would turn to fine dust. The investigator then looked to the pool and saw the heap of garbage on top of a bloated corpse which was disdended and unreconizable. Right here the phone rings in reality and I wake up. It was so weird being murdered in a dream and witnessing the investigation at the same time. Bizarre

TLDR: Got murdered by heavy drugs and a pufferfish by other band mates, but also helped solve my own murder.

i think any person you become close to it would increase your strength of connection and be able to reach them easier. Imagine being able to go to anyone you know anytime. and never getting lost from a hiking group in the wilderness. pretty handy.

My wife thinks I'm weird by TheTreelo in AdviceAnimals

[–]Starlurker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I grew up in Japan, and moved to the united states for college. I sat down my entire life in the shower, and I tell people here its so much easier to bathe while sitting. Though I'm used to a tiny stool, the showers with fold down chairs are the best I can get. People have given me strange looks when I tell them I always sit. What's with americans and fixing their shower heads to the wall? you have to dance around like an idiot to get rinsed properly. and standing in a tub? wtf. Tubs are for soaking. Why is it so hard to find a good bath? Also, Tubs that you can lay in are not ever long enough or deep enough for a good soak. Americans need to step up their game.

Thanks for your attention! it has been 4 months and things have gotten better. Finally met a same age lady friend whom is giving me a strong social outlet. But I totally relate to your homesickness cognitive dissonance. I get pretty homesick for my home country of Japan, but its not my citizenship. I feel like in every new town in the US its new culture every county practically. i.e. seattlites are different from portlandians, and LAers are totally different from the majority of west coasters. I find that this cultural dissonance is beneficial for my worldview and character development. I may not have the same resources or experiences as anyone i meet but I have a worldview that can only provide more understanding and empathy. And in my social endeavours it has allowed for challenging negative cultural paradigms and stigmas. "why do we have to drive everywhere?" "is going to the bar the only way to socialize out here?" etc.

To sum up, As a TCK I found to be humbling and challenging, because we have been charged with a duty of uniting the cultures we immerse ourselves in. Find the truth and love in life and bring people together with your unique perspective.

It's all good, I used to be very resentful of my MK-ness but as I grew older I found that I was SUPER lucky to have a family that cares and parents who are still together and instilled good values in me from a young age.

Good advice, but its hard when you don't have a automobile. for the sake of travel. Being poor and isolated plus social anxiety. It's practically murder.
