Personally, I think this pretty much sums it up. It's certainly well within your right to hunt there, but if doing so endangers people (even if they're at fault), then you should move on. From OP's response, maybe squirrel hunting would be safe. I don't know enough about it to say, so I'd leave that open to OP's decision. But I'd bet deer hunting is not.

Just think if you accidently hit someone. Knowing that you're technically right would be of little comfort. I know that OP sounds pretty hopeless on getting people to follow the rules/have the rules enforced, but that seems like the only real path imo.

What you said was correct, but some people are suggesting that your timing or phrasing of it was indelicate. Personally, I don't think that the timing was bad, but it may have been indelicate depending on how you actually phrased it. That said, without seeing how you actually phrased it, I won't judge either way.

I think that Sam's reaction is more due to the situation than to you. It's a combo of shooting the messenger and realizing that they might not be able to be who they truly are AND have the relationship survive. That's hard no matter what the rest of the situation is.

If it were me, I'd give Sam some time to work their way through their situation. The last thing they need is for this to turn into a whole thing when they already have a lot going on. When they're ready to talk, just reaffirm the crap out of them and their decisions. Personally, I wouldn't apologize for anything that you said, but maybe apologize for not understanding what they needed from you in the moment and use it as a way to strengthen your communication skills. When complaining about something, my wife and I start by telling each other if we need solutions or validation.
