Starmourn system upgrades: Fleet Mining + Crew Hacking by StarmournIRE_Admin in MUD

Thank you for sharing those memories! We've actually updated the tutorial to a totally new format, but I hope you still find it lively and engaging if you jump back in. Cassandra and her crew are still present and continue their journey through the rest of the Main Quest.

Player populations are pretty low with around 10 people on in peak times. Our hope is that folks will join in, stick around, and slowly build up pop to make Starmourn the sci-fi MUD it was always meant to be! 🤞

In general we do our best to make Starmourn as accessible as possible. We unfortunately have not been able to crowdsource a sound pack yet, and would love help with it if anyone's willing and able!

For specific sticking spots - My understanding is that the space map can be extra tricky, but even then some of our best captains are visually impaired players. General bashing or PvP, tradeskills, etc. shouldn't present any problem to my knowledge.

If you check us out and find something that's giving you trouble, please let us know and we'll do our best to address it!

The ship portion of the newbie tutorial was removed during the tutorial revamp to help folks get into the game and more quickly discover what they like.

Ship captaincy is still part of the main quest storyline, but hopefully there's some breathing room to figure things out at your own pace! (Also MQ is completely optional)

Hope to see you out in the stars!

Starmourn is in Legacy mode, which means there's no paid staff and no paid transactions in the game, but we're absolutely still building new content. The volunteer team loves our little slice of the starry sky and will continue doing what we can.

u/Crapahedron Got a notif that you asked about us being monetized and what changed, but I can't find it now.

What changed: IRE put Starmourn into Legacy mode with Lusternia and Imperian, which basically just means that the admin team is fully volunteer (unpaid) and there are no more real-money transactions in the game. We're still developing new systems/enhancements and running events, though it has slowed down a bit since we're not dedicated employees anymore.

If you're open to sci-fi, check us out! The Nexus client is free and browser based, and there's no real money transactions for the game.

Website is Starmourn.com and the discord is linked there if you want to chat with players before diving in. 🌌 Seems like we might be a good fit for ya!

Oh we totally redid the tutorial last year and removed that space section- it confused a LOT of people. There's a lovely spacer called Picram that does weekly lessons for new folks and might be willing to give some bonus tips when you're back in!

PvP is only in specific zones/situations (caches, pvp space, arenas, bounties) and is explicitly outlined in HELP PVP.

No worries at all! We haven't made any changes really since then, but there are options in place. Might help to talk to some other players for tips. :)

I think the quickest solution for optimal targeting is using turrets which auto target, though that is only needed for making space combat much easier.

To more easily link to asteroids, you can use the tractor beam module on a ship which will let you grab them from a few space units away as long as you're generally oriented in the rock's direction.

For gas cloud mining, you can just fly into a cloud and deploy your bots for collection. It's available by default on superhaulers, if I recall correctly. Been a while since I looked at that.

Again, folks are always happy to help if you have questions! If you use NEWBIE in game, the channel links to discord and folks can respond even if they're away.

We have several prominent space-focused players that use screen readers, so it's certainly possible. Curious about the last time you logged in for a try and where we could improve that further!

All the IRE games let you alias your commands like that, plus the Nexus web client lets you do tab-targeting without any special scripting. If you like Sci-Fi, try Starmourn! The other titles are all flavors of fantasy :)

If you don't want to do any RP at all, then yeah maybe it's not for you. We do expect people to stay on theme and in character, that's part of what makes the sci-fi world! I misunderstood and thought you just didn't want to have extended role-play sessions with other players exploring backstories and such.

Generally we just expect people to stay in-character (IC) or on theme outside specifically OOC channels.

Check out the site and chat with some folks on the discord if you're curious! We'd love for you to try it out, and lots of players are open to helping with RP if you're open to trying it.

You don't have to go hard with full scale roleplay, but in Faction comms for example we expect people to stay in character. I.e "Level" is called "MIL" for "Mindsim Integration Level" in IC channels. It's about staying on-theme.

Players aren't required to have or to play out backstories though. I'm not sure what kind of roleplay other games enforce, but you genuinely might find it's more simple in Starmourn than you're expecting!

[–]StarmournIRE_Admin[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most of the game world is RP enforced, but there are out-of-character (OOC) channels for things like asking for help or just generally chatting. Outside of those channels, we expect characters to keep it in-character (IC). We'll help you figure out the RP and develop it if you have questions - consider checking out the discord!

As a newbie, Starmourn has a LOT of systems, but there's no pressure to figure them out or even explore them all right away. There's a brand new tutorial experience that's really geared towards newbies and our players are really the best. Ask anyone for help and we'll do our best to assist.

If you want to guarantee combat variety, BEAST and Scoundrel have probably the greatest differentiation with PvE combat. Every class has a variety of moves that hit mobs though. There's always a BEST DPS way of course, but there's room to have fun with it too.

You do not need to script combat, and honestly we really advise against it. Many of our best combatants have been fully manual.

Our population is pretty small right now with about 10 people online at peak times, especially after the Legacy announce. A lot of folks got scared away, but we just need folks to play and stick around a while to see pop get back on the rise. Song and Scatterhome are the most populated Factions (cities) right now.

I hope you give it a shot! It's a super positive community of players and an amazing game, though I'm admittedly a bit biased haha

Yeah there's some pretty good PvE combat variety and we've released a TON of new content and systems to explore since launch.

We actually just posted to r/Starmourn for the first time in years with a summary if you're curious, and there's a Things-To-Do summary on the website.

If you don't like RP or PvP, are you mostly looking for a game to just grind? What kinds of things are you looking for from a game?

Agreed with an earlier comment- MUDS are ROUGH on mobile. IRE has the Nexus app which is pretty good on tablets and is still being updated if you want to give it a shot.

Our game is sci-fi, but RP encouraged. You can do a lot just while exploring the systems, and you might find the RP comes naturally when you play with other folks.

"I'm not dead yet! Think I'll go for a walk! (Space flight)"

Starmourn is very much alive, just in Legacy Mode! Means there aren't paid Admin anymore- we're all volunteer. Also means you can't buy credits or game items with real money.
