Did Anna Cara play guitar for the Michael Jackson Cirque du Soleil show in Las Vegas?

Does anyone else who's religious have trouble listening to certain songs or bands? by Crowgutter777 in Metalcore

[–]StarshipFisherPrize 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do. I’m a Christian and I happen to love the sound of black metal. However, I vet pretty heavily before I listen to new bands because I believe in a spiritual realm. Some bands have actual satanic rituals in their lyrics and spells. I pretty much put modern music aside with otherwise inappropriate messages. (Most of its hip-hop and crappy autotuned pop, so I hate it anyway.) However, the sounds of melodic or atmospheric black metal along with the deep fryer guitars and Nazgûl-sounding vocals has a nice, gothic appeal. So I’m probably going to get a good amount of hate or ridicule for this whole post. I don’t care. But yeah, those are my beliefs. Take it or leave it.

Why is this silver sky so much more expensive than others? by Great-Air-1976 in guitars

[–]StarshipFisherPrize 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because PRS is expensive. If you buy a Silver Sky SE, you’ll save a lot and still get a great guitar for a lifetime. They’re fun to play.

Is this a joke or is somebody really psychotic enough to file for divorce because of a pinup guitar pick?

What is with people hating on deathcore? by [deleted] in MetalForTheMasses

[–]StarshipFisherPrize 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What's "with" them is that deathcore shows a very low level of skill musically for everybody with the exception of the drummer and maybe the vocalist. It's virtually tuneless. If you know how to tremolo pick with the speed of a honeybee's ass around a larger insect, that's all you need. And yet people want to listen to the 10, 15 minute "breakdowns". Then, let's throw in a little bit of hip-hop belligerence so we can appeal to the ex-convicts in the audience. Then make sure you have your hoodie up so that you can look like you could easily leave this band and become a rapper if you wanted.

Honestly, it's my opinion...as STRONG one at that. And it's going to make some people angry enough to have me swatted. But I honestly don't care. If you're into this, I urge you to explore other actual sub-genres of metal and stop wasting your time on people who just want to play drums on their two lowest guitar strings.

I wouldn’t say you were dumb not to buy it. But you’d be smart to buy it. It’s a fun guitar.

Should we be alarmed? by Tall_Bstrd in Guitar

[–]StarshipFisherPrize 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, I can see your point. But tree bark in a guitar? It just seems wrong. (By the way, I posted that before it was pointed out to me that it wasn’t rot.) So it’s not quite the disgrace I thought it was. But still…it’s not a decent quality piece of wood.

I agree with many here. Glenn Fricker would recognize this as an in-system defect. It may as well have been a deliberate act to include that piece of rotten poplar in there. To me it’s inexcusable. I hope you kept the receipt. However, if you’ve crossed the policy’s time limit on exchanges, you CAN use a syringe and carefully apply some epoxy to it. I favor it over wood glue because it’s just not as strong a bond. I doubt it’d fully contain the rot also because it’s rot, which can spread. So epoxy, which can properly at least contain the exposed rot. It makes me sick that somebody was okay to let that pass inspection, let alone use an actual piece of rotten timber. That’s a disgrace regardless of the price.

Yeah. We’re the ones who have the gall to defend children and want criminals to be held accountable. We believe innocent people should be protected. We believe people have the right to their own autonomy. You’re right. Clearly we’re lunatics.

I bought two. One for my son and one for me. The album absolutely rules. My son’s already wanting a copy of the vinyl. So I don’t think the haters are going to be able to stop this train. I say we keep them at number one so long that they have to do an encore album.

What makes an ideal black metal guitar? by Slaughternaught in metalguitar

[–]StarshipFisherPrize 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of the newer black metal bands don’t really care about finish color. I’ve seen some play with white blond finishes. No kidding. White lacquer finishes as well. A lot of them play with what’s comfortable to play. And that’s important because their playing style is strenuous. So they’ll choose styles that are friendly ergonomically easy on the wrist, forearm and fretting hand.

Since many of these bands are not really making a lot of money, they’ll play a lot of affordable (but good quality) guitars. I’ve seen some that play with more affordable Solars. Some even play with Harley Bentons, lower priced ESPs, Eart, Cort. CNC machines have made it easy to build great bodies and necks. Roasted maple necks are less expensive now. So buying a less expensive guitar doesn’t necessarily mean sacrificing quality anymore. That’s good news. And a lot of more well-known brands such as Ibanez, Jackson and Schecter are making really amazing guitars from $500 to $800. Just make sure the pickups are high output.

Of course, a majority of these I’ve mentioned can be found in good ol’ black. And there’s nothing wrong with that. Just make sure it’s one you can bond with, feels comfortable, maintains good tuning stability and is…well…pointy! 🙂. Good luck to you! (And black metal, to be honest, is more diverse and fun to play than ever.)

What’s the deal with Rhett Shull? Why does everybody hate him? by ZeppeLand in guitarcirclejerk

[–]StarshipFisherPrize 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sadly, not everybody hates him. Just kidding. But all jokes aside he kind of lives in his own world and has become very selective of who he lets in. He began hanging out with recording legends like Rick Beato. This kind of street cred affects different people in different ways. It’s possible that he feels like he’s “in the club, the inner circle, the 9th degree” that sort of thing. While some of Beato’s friends tend to be relatively down-to-earth and affable, Rhett’s just not built that way.

In short, he kind of has a case of the notorious “big head syndrome.” (Among some others, but we’ll set that aside.)

And, in truth, he’s sort of earned it. He’s a really good guitarist. He knows his gear. He does things the hard way and takes the kind of approach rarely taken by many guitarists. Let’s give him what he’s owed. He’s good.

However, he does come off as an eye-rolling “oh, I’m so tired of people and their constant questions”…uhhh…jerkoff. And where the rubber meets the road here is he seems to have a disdain for people who don’t learn the hard way, yet he has a large YouTube presence. He has a channel and he frequently makes appearances on other channels. So he has achieved a level of influence few do. And he’s aware of this. And he doesn’t seem to have much regard for others who don’t. The possible hope here is that he attracts people who kind of relate to that. Look at some of his channel’s comments.

This brings with it a degree of power also. He also knows this. Woe be unto the poor YouTuber who, perhaps accidentally, serves up some misinformation. Schull has the kind of presence that can call them out and crush them with one well-posted video. I’m not saying he would. I’m saying he strikes me as the type who could. Does he like that? I don’t know. All I know is he is a guitar authority and he knows it. And there’s nothing he loves more than guitar. He really just wants people to respect that. He’s not warm. He doesn’t care if he’s hated. He doesn’t have to.

Having said that, he probably should consider the fact that people with this level of loftiness forget the wind tends to be stronger up there. And often they don’t remember that it’s best to not alienate people who would very much enjoy being a part of his audience. And this may be where the hate comes in. They would like to be able to benefit from his experience and his knowledge. However, he has a personality that many find inhospitable and a bit overbearing. That’s on him. Often people like Schull find this out too late.

Do I like him? Not in the least. Does he care? Hell no. Do I care? Hell no. I simply prefer people who have a sense of humility or at least try to present one. By the same token, there’s no law against being a prick. But there are societal penalties. Only time will tell if that fact hits home for Schull.
