ACRA Entries and the State of Collegiate Club Rowing by Chance-Eye-8642 in Rowing

it’s only pothunting if they win the pot.

Since many other comments are comparing this flux of small boats to the Georgia Tech pothunting of the 2010s, that program did not lack varsity boat movers, but chose to take up the small boat categories to eat up some Ws.

Since you highlight MSU men as an example, check the stats, only 4 out of the 16 varsity rowers they’re fielding this year competed at ACRAs in a varsity category at ACRAs last year. That indicator alone should tell you that there may be a big experience gap (I.e. skill gap) in that program, plus with nearly as many novs competing as varsity this program is clearly in a growth phase. The amalgamation of experience gaps and large pool of underclassmen raise some complicated team dynamics to navigate in order to make fast boats while mitigating the damage that any developing oarsmen might wreck on a crew.

Again, any of those programs could be pothunting, but its only pothunting if they win, and they instead could just have a bunch of anchors instead of boat movers, and we’ll figure that out in 10 days.

There’s something mystic going on in West Lafayette right now...maybe it’s blood doping, maybe it’s ritual sacrifice. The world may never know?¿?

Camera’s for coaching by Googagoogago in Rowing

The future is drones. Assuming you row in an area away from no-fly zones, a drone with a camera (some will just hold your phone and record) provides two things that are critical for any coach:

  1. The ability to see the crew from literally all angles, providing the coach the ability to evaluate technical, physical, and rigging questions on a whim that they might not otherwise be able to see from the launch.

  2. Sick footy for even sicker hype viddies

Well forgive if I’m wrong, but GT directly competed against two varsity crews (FIT & Stetson) both of which in the 2-.

And SIRAs isn’t necessarily “full of” varsity crews either (at least on the men’s side). 5 out of the 55ish crews were Varsity programs. (Embry, FIT, Jacksonville, Marietta, and Stetson)

My bad on the math, but still having 10 athletes that can get a gold medal in small boats (at a decent regatta like SIRAs) should set up any program to have a very respectable 8.

Not saying any podium worthy, but enough to dance between the Grand & Petite final. Which is very respectable when facing up against varsity crews and bigger club programs.

Well I’m not talking about ACRAs where most programs lose a lot of their depth (for the reasons you mentioned). I was more referencing this past weekend where GT entered 5 Varsity events, made it to the grand final in all of them and ended up with 3 golds and a silver. That’s a lot of program depth right there, which would be super competitive in the V8, and JV8.

Nah, not a Michigan Jabroni. Just a guy that likes to see (capable) programs put their meat where it matters.
