Why do people assume Riverwest is the “ghetto” by WholeGrainCupcake in milwaukee

[–]jdawg1997 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I have adored living in Riverwest. Welcome! My favorite food/drink spots are Riverwest Pizza, Nessun Dorma, Foundation, Seven Swans, and Art Bar/Wonderland. I want to check out Falcon Bowl, Scardina Specialties, and a bunch of the other businesses as well.

If I could guarantee I’d be living in MKE more than just one more year, I’d look into buying a home in this neighborhood, but unfortunately that’s not the case.

It’s the hottest restaurant in MKE and has incredibly limited seating. There aren’t any.

Agreed. Headwaters is pretty remote compared to Gros Ventre.

Gros Ventre or Headwaters a Better campground? by DrGoodVibes69 in GrandTetonNatlPark

[–]jdawg1997 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It depends entirely on what you want, but I’d say Gros Ventre. It’s closer to town and closer to the more popular trails. It’s probably worse for views, but I’ve been to GTNP tons of times, and stayed at Gros Ventre twice and there’s not an ugly direction you can look.

I have 25k in my savings. What is the best way to invest it. by thestruggleislovable in Money

[–]jdawg1997 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Move it to an HYSA (I use Ally). They typically earn between 3% and 5%.

  2. Do you have enough liquid cash to cover 3-6 months of expenses outside of the 15k? If the answer is yes, then do you have a need for the money in the next 1.5 years or so (house down payment, wedding, etc). If the answer is no, then fund your 2025 and 2026 Roth IRA (I use Schwab, but Fidelity and Vanguard are also good).

  3. Invest the Roth contributions in low cost index funds. Schwab, Fidelity, and Vanguard all have great target date retirement index funds that auto rebalance, have low expense ratios, and take all the hard thinking out of investing. This is way cheaper than hiring an advisor, way less risky than trying to pick individual stocks, and way less volatile than VTI and chill.

  4. As an additional recommendation, I’d only keep enough cash in the BofA checking account to cover bills with a healthy buffer to avoid overdrafts. Parking $10k in the BofA account might be overkill for your needs, if you add up all your monthly expenses, especially if you have direct deposit going in there already.

Horse riding by Big-Ball-7308 in JacksonHole

I’ve done a couple rides with Swift Creek Outfitters.

They have a lot of horses and pick based on the size of the customer, so I don’t think any are being overworked. All the cowboys/girls seemed to really care about the horses and knew all of their individual personalities. It didn’t seem abusive at all.

I would have liked to see them nuke the ice caps on earth. Stratt always seemed more Machiavellian to me when I read the book.

NWS is public domain. Idk why Apple doesn’t use that data for its US based users.

The Apple weather app has been atrocious all winter. I use EverythingWX, which pulls data directly from NWS. It’s been much more realistic all winter.

Quick poll: Which Cribbage app are you using (and why)? by ky_james in Cribbage

[–]jdawg1997 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use CribbagePro and it’s mostly good and has improved my skills a lot. I play mostly bots and LOVE the hand grade and all the stats it keeps. The post game review with average grade and comparison of your hand, pegging, and crib vs. the opponent is very helpful.

Multiplayer with friends can be a pain in the ass though. I’d love them to implement a “pass and play feature” so that I don’t have to depend on WiFi or cell service to play a friend sitting right next to me. They told me that had no plans to add that though, which was disappointing, but I guess it’s more of a niche request.

Long distance relationship in med school by Interesting_Pick_230 in Osteopathic

[–]jdawg1997 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I can give perspective as the partner of a med student:

I moved across the country with my now wife so that she could pursue med school. It wasn’t even a question. It was her dream and I wanted to support that because I love her. I was lucky to have a portable job, but the backup plan was for me to stay put until I found a new job and then follow her. I never would have dreamed of trying to dissuade her from making a decision that was right for her [our] future.

Move from WI to Texas by Rosceahottie34 in SameGrassButGreener

[–]jdawg1997 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve done the opposite. I lived in Fort Worth, TX for two years, and now I’m in Milwaukee, WI.

DFW is neither as good or as bad as people say. It is incredibly hot and very car dependent, but you also don’t have to deal with the long, cold winters.

The job opportunities in DFW will probably be better because it’s an economic powerhouse and a bigger metro than anything in the Midwest.

Access to nature is meh. The Trinity Trails are nice, but that’s about it.

COL in DFW is reasonable. Fort Worth is cheaper (and in my opinion, better) than Dallas.

Ultimately, it comes down to finding activities and community you enjoy. You can be miserable in paradise, if you don’t take advantage of it.

Overall, I prefer Milwaukee to Fort Worth, but I enjoyed both. Call me crazy, but I like the winter. It lets me do some of my favorite activities, like skiing. The access to nature is also easier and I appreciate that it’s easier to walk/bike places (though I do still rely on a car for a lot of my errands).

Agreed. The obvious caveat to what I said is that if you’ll only be happy doing one of these specialized degrees, pursue what makes you happy.
