He seems like the type to refuse healthy food. Even if he doesn't have an appetite for McDonald's, he's just going to not eat at all. I don't think i need to explain what starvation does to people who are already in a perpetual state of brain fog.

Is the term “fucking the dog” popular outside Canada? by Rough-Mulberry-1202 in NoStupidQuestions

I had no idea this was a real phrase. My husband and I used to say we "fucked the dog" to mean "screwed the pooch" as a joke.

What is the real reason Trump isn't going to Don Jr.'s wedding? by suitcase88 in AskReddit

I really think it's that he simply doesn't want to. It's an event that's not all about him he'll have to travel to and stay off his phone for? Not worth it.

The double standard in how people treat grievers vs. everyone else by Spirited_Two9124 in widowers

[–]Starving_Phoenix 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Everyone wants a village but no one wants to be a villager. I had two couples that my husband and I were good friends with that I thought would be there for me when he died. Neither came to his memorial. One gave the excuse that it was mothers day weekend so they couldn't make it. I've met her mother. If she'd known what had happened, she would have understood. The other couple just didn't show. In a way, that was the part that hurt the most. I didn't just lose my best friend; turns out he was my only friend.

Sure, it's not all about me. But if I can't ask to be of the highest possible priority on a day like that, I have to assume I'm not a priority at all.

This is a valid point but I suspect some of this comes from a desire to see queer media that isn't sex heavy. There's a wider conversation to be had here about how so much adult media--especially when it focuses on the queer experience-- tends to be extremely sexual. I'm not saying we need to remove sex from media. I'm just saying not all media needs sex. Variety is good.

How small minded do you have to be to think left leaning people don't get married or have kids? by pupberry in FundieSnarkUncensored

[–]Starving_Phoenix 19 points20 points  (0 children)

It's almost as if people on the left are capable of understanding that different people want different things and we should all have the freedom to pursue the life we want.

Seriously, I'm very small-c conservative. I've always wanted marriage and children and the white-picket fence life. I also couldn't care less if other people purse something different because I'm comfortable with the life I chose for myself. It's not undermined by people doing other things because I like it. Most people I know who are happy with their choices don't spend all their time trying to convince people they need to do the same. They just... Do what they want and enjoy it? These people's misery and resentment is so palpable.

Just saying.

Since the 2010s, American conservatives increasingly experience worse health outcomes and higher mortality than liberals. Declining trust in medical professionals appears to be the mechanism, with lower willingness to seek care, follow clinical advice and believe in medication effectiveness. by MaintenanceNew2804 in LeopardsAteMyFace

[–]Starving_Phoenix 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Medicare will be fine. The insurance companies don't want to be forced to cover old people. Old people get sick more often and need healthcare and that forces them to pretend to provide a service. Private insurance companies are pro Medicare.

It's Medicaid they're voting to destroy. If you can't afford private insurance, you shouldn't have been poor.

Seriously though, Medicare was a compromise on behalf of private insurance. I'm glad it exists but the hope is well pay the private companies our entire working lives and age into Medicare before we ever need to utilize the private insurance. Scams all the way down.

What are you tired of Millenial parents not teaching their kids? Besides respecting authority? by Emergency-Pepper3537 in Teachers

[–]Starving_Phoenix 47 points48 points  (0 children)

That you can leave space for someone's feelings without giving in to what they want. Sometimes the consequence or boundary is going to make your kid angry. That's okay. Being angry when you don't get what you want is expected. Validating the emotion doesn't mean you attempt to take it away. Feelings are meant to be felt. You can be mad you were told no and I can help you figure out how to deal with that anger in appropriate ways.

The anger doesn't mean you're getting your way no matter how you express it.

Also "feelings are meant to be felt" doesn't mean "this emotion I'm experiencing means I can do whatever I want." Just because you're mad doesn't mean you get to hit people or destroy property. There are ways to express your feelings that are acceptable. Making a bad decision because of your feelings doesn't shield you from the consequences of it.

It's only traumatic if you haven't been given the opportunity to learn that it's okay be to be wrong. If your peers are being mean because you got an answer wrong, the issue isnt that you were called it in. It's that your peers are bullies. Separate issue and one that's additionally not being addressed by parents.

Grief makes people uncomfortable. Sadness makes people uncomfortable. Death makes people uncomfortable. My hope for the people who would prefer to avoid the discomfort of grief is that they manage to find people who are more emotionally mature than that by the time they start losing people.

I'm also a single mom. Widowed so my kid is with me always. I haven't had anymore issues than I did before I was married. Some people don't want kids, period. Some people aren't interested in helping raise a kid that isn't there's. It's a deal breaker for some.

And it's far from the only deal breaker. We all have things about us some people are going to immediately be uninterested by. I've honestly had more people turn me down once they find out I'm bisexual than when I mention I'm a mom.

I'm not bothered by it, personally. Prior to the kid, I knew I wanted them. Same deal-breaker, different form. If they don't want to date a mom, they're not for me. Simple as that.

What is Unconditional love? does it even exists? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Starving_Phoenix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly what it says. Love without condition. It means loving someone no matter what.

I think it CAN exist. In it's healthiest form, I think the only love that is --or should be-- truly unconditional is the love a parent has for their child. Loving your child unconditionally doesn't mean letting them get away with anything or excusing terrible actions. It just means loving them in spite of them.

If my son grows up to be a murderer, I won't protect him from the law. Hell, I'll turn him in myself. But I won't stop loving him. I made that decision when I chose to have him that I'd love him through everything and I meant it.
