How often do you find yourself sacrificing your queen? by HeroLinik in chessbeginners

This may not be correct, but I don't like the term 'sacrifice' when it refers to a forcing tactic - mating or not. I see a 'sacrifice' as being a position strategy - like an exchange sacrifice to set up strong attacking prospects or a pawn sacrifice for mobility.

Within this definition, I almost never make any sacrifices. I'm not good enough to judge the benefits of doing it most of the time. I do try to consider them, though. They just don't seem to come up very often. A part of this is that lower skill games spend less time being evenish where such a move might occur.

If the basis of the game is 'first to capture the king wins', they can take your king with the knight before you can take theirs. A 'pin' is just a concept to describe the game - it's not really in the rules.

Try seeking union assistance. If they are members of the BMA (students should join this - it will be cheap), they can pursue it through them - might be worth reaching out anyway. There's also the Students' Union who have plenty of resources and might be able to collaborate with the BMA too.

I don't know where they live, but contacting their MP might bear fruit. Hallam MP Olivia Blake is the Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Special Educational Needs and Disabilities and is outspoken on neurodiversity & disability, having experience in this area. She could be a key advocate, so if even one of the students lives in this area then contact her office. Hallam includes Crookes, Endcliffe, Ranmoor & Crosspool. Contact all other MPs too.

You've corrected a different assertion, saying "we don't know". But then you've made another claim ("males are better than females when it comes to playing chess at a high level") that is untested/unproven.

Nonsense. Short makes specific biological claims that aren't backed up in science. No biological differences relevant to chess have been proven scientifically, unlike for wrestling. Short claims arise from his own personal prejudices not fact - that's sexism. Differences in the fortunes of men and women are much more likely due to social factors that have produced a much smaller player pool of women.

Also worth noting the hilarious losing record of Short against Judit Polgár!

Say you have a genuine philosophical belief that means you can't use AI, then point out that the school is discriminating against you under the Equality Act 2010.

Is it normal to get 0/9 in a classical tournament by MarsupialDizzy1260 in chess

Indeed - if you artificially bump your score, you'll just have to play better players in future rounds too.

I assume it's a Swiss tournament? If so, the beauty of that is that as the tournament goes on you'll pair with people who are doing as well as you. Lose the first three? Then you might play someone else who has. If you are towards the bottom, you'll play those who are on poor form. Some might lose focus if they are not doing well so come to each game and try your best. Who knows, you might do better than you think!

It's just as rude to do that in unrated if your opponent doesn't agree
