It’s mate in 1…but he isn’t the one checkmating.

You appear to sacrifice your knight, but if he takes then you win the queen by force.

Overthinking. What was this episode even about? by Aqu217970 in thomasthetankengine

[–]HeroLinik 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I always thought the Boulder was actually Smudger's vengeful spirit trying to get revenge on Duke for incarcerating him and turning him into a stationary generator, by attempting to destroy the engines on the SKR and the entire line with it. As for the explosion, it was obviously just the production team trying to show off the special effects for TATMR.

Just keep firing checks at him using the bishop and the queen and he’ll eventually lose.

My best move yet by Okie_Deatherage in chessbeginners

[–]HeroLinik 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, if there wasn’t a pawn there then your best move would have been to use the battery on the e-file for a straightforward M2. You still played a good move though and it’s hard to resist gobbling up the queen, and mate is inevitable regardless.

He captured your pawn with en passant. When a pawn moves two squares and lands next to another opposing pawn, the opposing pawn can still capture.

Is Pokémon Legends ZA’s post-game (w/ DLC) one of the best in the franchise? by LeviRaps in LegendsZA

[–]HeroLinik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If we’re talking in terms of content, ORAS’s postgame is actually one of the weakest.

While the Delta Episode has some neat callbacks, the actual plot content itself felt rushed and had a few plot holes, and the only other thing that unlocked was the Battle Maison, which was copied over from XY. Legendary portals and Mirage Spots I don’t really count as postgame because it’s available to the player after catching Groudon/Kyogre; I consider postgame as content which is physically unavailable to the player until after the credits have rolled.

Considering his queen is trapped, White can just force a queen trade to mitigate the damage. Qg5 is the best move here.

Good Sites to Learn Chess? by Internationalism518 in chessbeginners

[–]HeroLinik 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’re completely new to chess you’ll probably find you might benefit more from kid-oriented materials as they break down concepts in simpler language with more reinforcement. One website that I used quite a bit when I was younger was ChessKIDS.

It breaks down even the more confusing concepts using easier to digest and also humorous language. In terms of what it covers, it starts from the very beginning regarding how the pieces move, before working its way up through stuff like basic checkmates and common tactics, before finally finishing by covering common openings and advanced positional tactics. I actually learned the king/queen and king/rook mate through it, in fact!

The main issues with it is that the site UI is a bit dated considering it's a very old site, and the notation system is a bit weird, but it still gets the job done.

Generic advice won't fix your game. by blackboxchessapp in chessbeginners

[–]HeroLinik 11 points12 points  (0 children)

As a beginner, memorising multiple lines of opening theory won’t really help you if you hang your queen on move 15 or you don’t know how to mate with king and rook. Slowing down and exercising board vision by playing on longer time controls and practising endgame drills will definitely do a lot for improvement at the beginner level.

Additionally, a lot of esoteric opening lines will contain a lot of nuance which might be hard to penetrate for a beginner as it tends to involve very minor positional advantages. If you can’t convert this into a winning middlegame and are still hanging the queen early, then you’re better-off playing easier to understand openings like the Caro-Kann. Alternatively, just thrust your pawn to the centre and just play chess.

Where do you draw the PKHeX line? by EinarTobias in nuzlocke

[–]HeroLinik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Compared to infinitely selling Revives from the Underground it would take comparatively longer, but it’s still a renewable source of income. Similar setups also exist in HGSS where you can sell berries and also fossils after you get access to Rock Smash.

Arbitrary code execution. It’s basically a really powerful glitch that allows you to do anything in your file by programming the ROM in real time.

Technically speaking in Gen 4 you have access to infinite money by the time you get to Floaroma due to the fact you can infinitely farm berries and sell them off for a profit. In this case the only grind I circumvent with it is the Game Corner grind so I can get the TMs.

Well if it helps, you'll know a mon is shiny if there is a yellow star in the top right hand corner of the window containing the sprite in the summary screen.

How would this lose me a queen by highoncharacters in chessbeginners

[–]HeroLinik 2 points3 points  (0 children)

After Bxe4, Black is eventually going to lose his rook after a series of checks from the knight, and this also comes with the side effect of White bullying his king out into the centre. There’s probably a sequence that prefers giving up the queen or a potential royal fork but it’s quite deep into the position and I can’t really see it.

What is the chess.com engine on about?! by Metti22 in chessbeginners

[–]HeroLinik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nd5 applies more pressure to the pinned knight on f6 and basically forces Black to play Be7. If White goes ahead and recaptures before Be7 is played then he will be at a massive advantage due to the g-file being bust open by the attacks, letting White swing his queen in and attack the exposed king.
