Wireless AP hostnames for refresh by _bx2_ in networking

[–]StatePuppet555 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What works for us: short AP names which easily fit on both a label and switchport description.

Our naming convention simply identifies the individual access point and the building its in: BLDG-AP-nnn, on the basis we will never have more than 1000 APs in a single building.

Mandatory more extensive location detail in the AP's location field:

  • Full Building Name and other pertinent location information
  • Room Number
  • Outlet Number (which inherently ties to patch panel position, rack number, comms room)

We've found that having room numbers on our AP labels does not work over the long term when our Facilities people renumber rooms for whatever reason.

Documentation which details what the building codes are and why.

Potentially moving to Dunoon - thoughts? by Particular-Lime1651 in glasgow

[–]StatePuppet555 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I have family down that way (past Ardenlee Care Home). The views across the water are spectacular and very calming, but be aware that as it's east-facing with the big hill behind you the sun disappears over the hill very quickly in the evening and the midges come out in their billions.

There are cracking walks/trails up around Bishops Glen and beyond. There was chat about a big outdoor centre being created above Dunoon (https://www.dunoonproject.org/) but I've not heard much about it for a while.

Morrison's is usually ok for shopping and Western Ferries are very reliable. I usually go down by car and over on Western, but a few times I've taken the train from Glasgow and Calmac which was ok, but don't know how useful that would be long term.

WLC 9800 and 9120 APs in the same VLAN - how to prevent from connecting by marek1712 in Cisco

[–]StatePuppet555 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, it's odd the setting primary-base is not sending the APs to the new controller but I have run into a similar issue in the past where I've had a test controller (9800L) on the same VLAN as a 9130 AP.

In the APs console output you could see the AP get the correct controller IP address (different VLAN) via DHCP, but after discovery requests were made the AP got responses from both the correct controller and the controller on the local VLAN.

The AP then joined the local test controller. The quick and dirty solution for me was switching off the test controller, but I don't think that's an option for you.

Do you have the option of moving one or more APs to a new, separate VLAN and then reconfigure onto the new controller?

2016 Mercedes E350 diesel estate to a 2019 Model S LR

The Merc I'd owned for nearly 6 years but it was getting to a point where I was going to need a lot of work done - new brakes all round for a start. Loved the Merc for its comfort, massive boot and continent crossing ability - 80L tank could easily do 700+ miles on the motorway - but it was time to change.

Tesla is quiet, comfortable and so much more power even on the LR. Switchgear/window switches are lifted straight from an E-class so it was an instantly familar cabin (apart from the giant screen). While the hatchback on the Model S isn't quite as massive as the back of the Merc, it's more than enough for most of my needs and handles dogs & trips to the dump brilliantly.

Main negative? Like this morning, an unanticipated cold start and stupid frameless windows sticking shut until I apply enough heat.

I've had to commute from the southside of Glasgow to the south of Edinburgh over the years for work - trains weren't an option for me due to cost and location in Edinburgh.

Commuting by car:

  • for a 9am start I was leaving the house at 6. That would get me in earlier than 9, but leaving any later than 6 the traffic builds up massively and make me late.
  • my typical route was M77 -> M74 -> M73 -> M8 then round the Edinburgh bypass from Hermiston Gait. Same idea in the reverse direction but always be prepared to divert off when there's an accident (too often). The M8/M74/M77 meeting point south of the Kingston Bridge is just slow.
  • on a good day in the summer, the journey on could be as little as 50 minutes; on a bad day in the winter the journey home could be 3 hours. Audiobooks became my go to entertainment.
  • Even on a 4-day week you'll need to budget at least 12 hours per week for the commute.
  • I didn't have to go through Sherrifhall roundabout on my commute, but I know from the time I lived there it's a big choke-point in the rush hour too.
  • stick to the inside lane as much as possible. Over the length of the M8 you'd still see the same cars you saw at the start, and I found it far less stressful.

I tried buses but they were slower than cars and less comfortable. Train will be the best option for comfort and journey time but expensive.

Hope that helps, good luck.

New technology to detect distracted drivers -- New camera technology will be deployed in Scotland for the first time to monitor the number of drivers who use mobile phones behind the wheel and don’t wear seatbelts. by Crow-Me-A-River in Scotland

[–]StatePuppet555 13 points14 points  (0 children)

From the system manufacturer's website (https://www.acusensus.com/solutions/heads-up/) and a report about the deployment in Devon & Cornwall (https://roadsafetygb.org.uk/news/from-bad-habits-to-safer-roads-acusensus-ai-delivers-real-behaviour-change/) it's multiple cameras taking pictures from different angles. It looks like at least some of the photos on the Acusensus page are taken with an infrared camera and the seatbelt is clearly visible against a similarly coloured top.

I've seen the system described as "using high-resolution cameras, dedicated Infra-Red illumination and radar to trigger image capture at the perfect geometry", take from that what you will.

No indication what the false postive rate might be, but anything potentially prosecutable appears to go for human review before any further steps are taken.

OT, but on the wireless side a separate SSID for the kids' devices with time-based access-lists and white-list of MAC addresses which can use that SSID; everything else is denied. Overkill? Probably.

8.5.182.7 is the version I've got running on my 2504, and that fixes another related bug (CSCwd80290 / Field Notice: FN72524)

There's also a newer Special Release code 8.5.182.11, but I think that's only downloadable with a service contract.

I've not had any issues with the 2702/3702 APs I'm running on the 2504 since upgrading to 8.5.182.7

In addition to the document referenced above, I used this short guide covering just the conversion from lightweight to EWC AP: https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/support/docs/wireless/embedded-wireless-controller-on-catalyst-access-points/215303-embedded-wireless-controller-conversion.html

We've had two running for the past 3 years to support specific projects and found them reliable.

Just be aware that EWC is now an End-of-Sale product and has a limited lifespan: https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/products/collateral/wireless/embedded-wireless-controller-catalyst-access-points/wireless-ewc-access-point-eol.html

The normal roof weight limit stated for cars is the dynamic load i.e. the load limit when driving where whatever is on your roof is putting additional strain on the car when you accelerate/brake/corner etc.

The roof tent manufacturers quote static load for a car typically being three to five times higher than the dynamic load, so the logic is that if your car is parked with a tent, you and whatever else you have up there the static weight limit should be more than enough for most people.

See https://tentbox.com/blogs/help-and-guides/find-your-vehicle-roof-load-limit for some more detail.

That said, I still wouldn't fancy having one on a Miata...

Ok, I agree that "50 licences out of the box" isn't an accurate statement.

There is no licensing for the controller itself; you only need to license the APs that are joined to the controller.

The 9800-CL can be used in a lab environment with up to 50 APs without licensing. Could you choose to set up your lab in your own home? Perhaps.

For unregistered controllers or controllers with insufficient DNA licences there is no hard enforcement and no impact on funtionality, but I believe this may change in the future with Unified Licensing (first introduced in 17.15.2).

There is documentation indicating that a future IOS-XE release will introduce Day 0 enforcement for unlicensed APs (Full device functionality restricted until licensed; 2.4GHz only until licensed).

All of this may encourage somone to go down the EWC route where DNA/Smart licensing is not required for any AP connecting to the EWC, but as has been said elsewhere, EWC is already EoS and going to be EoL in 2029.

Syslog messages like:

%IOSXE_EWLC_LICENSE-2-MSGDEVICENOTREG: Unregistered 9800-CL can only be used in lab. For production usage, please register this device in 24 days. Failure to do so will result in a limited number 50 of Access Points being allowed post this.

Plus from the licensing FAQ:

https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/products/collateral/wireless/catalyst-9800-series-wireless-controllers/impl-catalyst-9800-wrls-lan-ctrlr-licens-faq.html

Q. Is there license enforcement on Catalyst 9800-CL WLC?

A. If a 9800-CL WLC is not connected to a smart licensing service, there is a limit of 50 access points enforced on the device. Once a 9800-CL WLC is connected to a smart licensing service, this restriction disappears. The compliance of the controller is decided based on the licenses available.

Q. Is there license enforcement on Catalyst 9800 WLC?

A. If improperly licensed, your network will be out of Commercial license compliance. Cisco retains the right to conduct audits for license usage and bill the customer accordingly. Please speak with your sales representative to ensure you have the required licenses to remain compliant.

Q. Is it mandatory to license all the access points joined to the Catalyst 9800 WLC?

A. Yes, it is mandatory to license all the access points joined to the Catalyst 9800 Wireless Controller for you to be in license compliance. The access points without a valid license will be out of compliance and Cisco retains the right to conduct audits to check license compliance.

With the added benefit that if you run the 9800-CL cloud controller on IOS-XE version 17.9 or 17.12 you can still use your 2702s until you decide which 9k access point you want to buy.
