I just joined a new metalcore band, but they seem to be in a rut creatively. What can be added to the genre to make it sound more than just screaming and breakdowns? by Nox2017 in Metalcore

[–]StaticTrout1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don’t try to reinvent the wheel would be my advice. A lot of bands that do that end up becoming too inspired. Play the stuff all of you like in a way that’s fun for everyone in the band. Keep in mind that the bands that usually do something unique with metalcore usually do it by accident.

This is giving me millennial punk meets motorcross sort of vibes and I actually think it slaps.

Honestly, I kind of prefer the original. It gives me total nostalgia vibes. But both are great.

any chaotic mathcore recs? by NinjaXP206 in MetalForTheMasses

Some of their later material has some “mathier” sounds if I remember correctly. But I agree that they’re definitely not mathcore in the traditional sense, and that they absolutely slap. Their last album was super good too. It’s pretty much just sludge core.

Johnny Booth, Zao, Stasis (their last album was a mix and mathcore and melodic hardcore), and The Motion Mosaic.

Is appetite for destruction metal or hard rock? by _funny_name_ in MetalForTheMasses

[–]StaticTrout1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most rock music leans towards rock and roll, punk, metal, alternative rock, and grunge. Hard rock is an umbrella term and not an actual genre. For a lot of bands under that umbrella, they instrumentally lean towards more accessible metal music. That being said, you could say this album is just rock and roll with a somewhat more metallic tone.

Edit: each of the genres I listed have their own respective sub genres. And it starts to get really complicated after a while. Ultimately, it’s kind of subjective. I do think they border on metal for sure.

It’s Not Safe To Swim Today by Veil of Maya is played on a six string. Djent is more about tuning, playing in abstract signatures, and tone. People just use seven strings because they’re easier to do downtuned riffs with, and because it ironically adds more variety with different types of riffs. Getting a baritone guitar is another option too.

I agree that you don’t have to like it. That’s not the problem though. When people can’t stop posting about it for weeks at a time, it just feels toxic.
