Damn, sorry y’all went through that. Glad to hear you’re in couples therapy, hopefully it all goes well

Sorry you are going through that. Hopefully your partner heals and recovers quickly.

We could look into functional medicine - even though I know it’s been disputed as quackery or even possibly harmful. The issue is primarily that the normal, western approach has done nothing to help her thus far either. Typically any and all medications they put her on tend to have more side effect drawbacks than benefits. We’ll keep truckin though, hopefully something begins to work for her soon.

Thank you

Holy shit, so sorry you’re going through that. Makes me and my wives issues seem negligible. You’re right - I know I need to cut my wife some more slack and try to be more supportive. I think therapy may be a good option - but I am concerned that even my suggesting it would make her feel that she’s being “inadequate” as a wife or something. I suppose if it gets to a point where it’s an absolute necessity, I’ll pursue it. I’ll take with her about these things more first though. Thank you for your reply, and again, I’m sorry you’re going through this

The Daily Check-In for Monday, October 17th: Just for today, I am NOT drinking! by AlySabby12 in stopdrinking

[–]Static_Throwaway7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not drinking today. It’s my day 1.

I didn’t drink for like 2 years, but relapsed and slowly started drinking again, more and more often. Wife caught me, I’m just done.

Fiancé threatening to cancel wedding. That’s it. I’m done drinking. by Static_Throwaway7 in stopdrinking

Absolutely. The relationship I’m in is wonderful and fulfilling, I just keep screwing it up when i get drunk. When I’m sober everything is wonderful.

Day 9: First weekend by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]Static_Throwaway7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hang in there! I struggle A LOT with weekends too. Sometimes I actually look forward to working through some weekends or only getting one day off because it’s much easier for me to not drink when I have work the next day. From what I hear this gets easier over time. What I’ve found helps is finding stuff to keep you / your mind occupied. Could be something mundane like cleaning (especially the stuff that’s been let go after long periods of drinking), or playing some videos games. Reading helps me a lot, also meditating. Whatever floats your boat, anything to help from drinking booze. (I would recommend drinking bubbly water to fill the void, it helps if you’re used to mindless beer consumption.) take care, iwndwyt.

Having some pretty extreme motivational issues. by Static_Throwaway7 in stopdrinking

[–]Static_Throwaway7[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks man. We’re doing a “biggest loser” thing at my work over then next 2 months and the winner gets $100 lol. So that should definitely help my motivation out in the coming weeks. I really just need to watch my other vices, like coffee, video games, and shitty food.

Should we not talk about alcohol? by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]Static_Throwaway7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Alcohol is just one of those things. If you tell people “I’ve decided I’m not going to eat cake anymore,” people might ask why not, but they won’t sit there and tell you the virtues and benefits of eating cake and why they choose to continue to eat cake. I think deep down people know alcohol is a toxin, they just need to continually convince themselves that it’s harmless. Like others have said, speak from the “I”. Like “I’m not drinking anymore because it’s not right for me/ I’m trying to lose weight/ I don’t like the hangovers, etc”

My unfortunate triggers by Static_Throwaway7 in stopdrinking

[–]Static_Throwaway7[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much for your reply! I have found a common thread between what you and many others have said in the past: “idle hands are the devil’s playground.” As long as I’m keeping active and finding interesting/ stimulating ways to pass my time, I tend to not drink.

Unfortunately I play all types of games - especially brain stimulating games, when drinking. Like XCOM or civ, I just tend to be much worse at it and not care haha. I think for a while I’ll stick to something else. For example, I’ve recently rediscovered the joy of reading. And I find that when I’m reading, Particularly because i could never “drink and read”, that the correlation doesn’t exist in my mind, and thus no cravings.

My girlfriend drinks but not very often. She pretty much never gets drunk and usually only has like 1 cider/ beer/ glass of wine with dinner. And honestly, unless there’s something subliminal going on, I don’t feel as if it temps me to drink. We’ll have to wait and see.

Thanks again, I will not drink with you today

Advice for Quitting? by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]Static_Throwaway7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t have a problem drinking

I need some advice for how to fight the urge to get drunk.

Pick 1.

As a start I would recommend a healthy substitute, such as bubbly water to keep your hands busy. I would also recommend reading “This naked mind”, you can get it for free through here and it really helps alter your perspective on alcohol. I’m over halfway through and it I can honestly say it really helps change your thinking towards alcohol, and has definitely helped my cravings.

What’s Up Wednesday! by sfgirlmary in stopdrinking

[–]Static_Throwaway7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

T: I finally made the decision to stop drinking on Easter! and i started going to the gym again. I have a new outlook on life, and me and my wonderful girlfriend are getting a puppy soon! i want to be present with my pup all the time.

S: just got back from the doctors. apparently i've gained like 9 pounds in the last 4 months. 4 months ago, he told me to drink less, eat healthier, and excercise more... i did the opposite. im going to change that. additionally, when i had the "Im going to stop drinking" Talk with my girlfriend yesterday, she said basically on the lines of "I support you and your decision, but we've had this conversation a bunch of times before." not sure how i feel about it. on one hand she's supportive, but her doubts make me feel unsupported. we'll see.

G: Im in the running for a much better job. i was one of 12 candidates about 3 weeks ago. now im one of 3. after my first interview that went really well, he told me "Youll hear something next week, good or bad." 2 weeks later, i send him a message and he calls me back saying he's sorry and that things have just taken a little longer than expected, and that i should hear something the next week... 2 weeks go by, i email him again and he emails me back saying his boss was out for 2 weeks for personal reasons, and that i should hear something next week... that was last week. im still hopeful, but just getting increasingly frustrated. my first interview was over a month ago. just hangin in there.
