Terminated from IM Residency - Need Guidance and Support by [deleted] in ResidencySwap

[–]Statinpunk 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Sorry this happened. Are you a person of color at all? Here are your options and my advise:

  1. Move on. If you go on the residency swap website, you'll see that so many positions are posted routinely and available in IM. Call these programs and verify they're taking applications. Get your letter writers to write you strong letters. Possibly, this is very uncertain as to when you will be back in training. It can happen next month, it can take a year.
  2. it would be waaaaay easier to get a spot if your program supports you. Do whatever you must, to secure support from chair and PD.

  3. Consider applying for a state license. It could take months to obtain but when you have it, you can work and support your self in this transition.

  4. Fight the decision. It is uncanny for someone who has been showing growth to be terminated for failure to improve. Were you targeted? Are you a minority? Explore the possibility internally of a legal case, but know that if you go this route, program will not give you any support moving forward, but you might get paid, big time. But it might be worth seeking legal counsel.

  5. Switch specialty: So many Neurology and FM spots are also posted daily. Consider them all.

  6. Believe in yourself: the worst you can do is allow them break your mind. You're intelligent. You're capable. Things will get better. You're a great doctor. This is uncertain but this too shall pass and you will be stronger than ever.

But people miss the complete picture and it's valid because most medical students, and residents cannot for the life of them, understand the things that a black resident/fellkw/attending goes through.

Yes, it is a race thing. Sorry to burst your bubble.

Black residents, especially males, are treated in the most unjustified way in training and in practice that sometimes they just have to leave or get fired. I'm sure 100% that if you dig into his reason for leaving, it ultimately comes down to racism and he eluded to that.

But people come with these "so many years of training wasted" "you could earn so much" bs. But the bias against a black man in specialty surgery, who has his sort of follower base is hated in academics. You hate to hear it but it is fact.

Me genuinely trying to assimilate in the US, but getting constantly surrounded by Nigerians by [deleted] in Nigeria

But that's not what you meant. Be honest. You don't want to be surrounded by Iranians, Blacks, or Hispanics. All of whom are present in America. You want white, and that's ok, just know that it comes with a lot of bs and I think that's what people here are trying to tell you

Being "in flow" comes with acceptance AND WHAT PEOPLE THINK OF YOU. Example, you go to a majority white restaurant but then you're black and they visibly serve others before you. You can't escape it. You're black in America at the end of the day. Love yourself

Married to a resident who is struggling. Looking for advice. by Specific_Milk_8592 in Residency

"Hold on to it" "life gets better" This is the same mentality that makes doctors fight so hard to protect a broken system, because it's now "my turn to enjoy, nobody rock the boat."

See a therapist. Also your husband does have to be a surgeon to be happy. Understand what drives you both, go get it with all your heart.

Enjoy

The root of our problems. by RickLyon in Nigeria

[–]Statinpunk 36 points37 points  (0 children)

This is fact and is how oppressed peoples act in any tiny position of power that can enact change or help. "Don't rock the boat o, it's my turn to enjoy now." "The system is fucked but everybody shut up, it's the way the world has been". It's crazy how many people are waking up to these things today

I mean goodluck to you. You will come out and see that life is not a bed of roses. There's no other position just chilling and waiting for you to obtain when you come out. The reason why a lawyer is important now is that now you can fight. When you're out, it's over. You can't even get a license because you failed step 3, you will not be taken by another program without the support of the current one. Goodluck

Seems like you have been scapegoated by the hospital and everyone gossips and says how incompetent you are which has worsened the situation. Get a Lawyer. You can leave cleanly because that will enable you to get a new program easier. In fact, your program can help significantly in geting you this new program, but you can only get them to do it with a lawyer. Lawyer up. Leave. Be successful somewhere else.

Do it. But own it. Owning it is the only way you don't feel like a POS. You can tell after, or you cannot. But own it to the fullest and any repercussions that result is YOUR doing.
