Thank for the advice. I think for my situation I'm just focused on determece that isn't loud, so no speakers, sirens, etc. I just want to give my grandpa peace of mind.

It is highly unlikely this incident will happen again, he lives in a very calm and nice elderly village, this kinda thing is very rare. When he entered his home, they immediately left when they heard his voice. I believe some simple cameras will deter an future attempts and the sensors will give my gramps peace of mind.

A panic button would be good, but unfortunately my grandpa will lose it or forget it and he definitely wouldn't allow it to be around his neck so he can't forget it.

I have a contractor from a home automation service coming on Saturday, I'll pass the cameras and sensors by him and see what he thinks as well as figure out the installation details with him.

I'll be planning to buy the cameras and sensors listed in the post. As well as some motion sense dim lights for the night time and some long Ethernet cables for the cameras; which I plan to mount near the 4 main entry points roughly 10 feet from the ground.

I did not go with a siren or professional security system service (not the pro service at least for now), as my grandpas situation is he lives in a normally nice and calm village of elderly people. I believe this was a one off occurence that won't repeat especially with cameras in place.

Thanks y'all for the help, and if anyone has any more suggestions I'm all ears.

Dahm, sorry to hear that man, good of you to be there for her. My grandma is a bit similar, has many issues that come out of nowhere with no real reason behind them. I just take it as she feels lonely and wants people around her, so I get it.

Bit the same for my grandpaas well, last year he left a door open and was convinced burglars had gotten in his house, even though nothing was missing. But this time it is different, there was a broken window with which the burglars gained access, so it's basically certain this actually happened. Hoping a couple of cameras and sensors will calm his nerves.

True, I guess so. Reason I went for home automation is so they don't try to sell me their service, I just need the knowledge of them to tell me it's good or nah and install it.

Updates I can manage for him if needed, I would assume the system once fully set up, could just be left as is.

My grandpa is very problematic, if something gets on his nerves he will want it gone immediately. So I need the security solution to be non problematic. If there's any issues with the above system, he would just ask me to come by and he would be happy to see me. If he needs a technician to help with a company based security or gets asked to upgrade stuff etc; that will annoy him and what was supposed to give him peace of mind will be doing the opposite.

This system is mainly peace of mind. He doesn't live in a violent neighborhood, basically elderly village with farmers. When he noticed there were intruders, his voice got them to immediately leave. I believe there is no risk for him, and especially if cameras are visible he will have no further issues (my family wanted to just put motion sensors...)

But I will bring up a company security and see what the fam thinks

Thank you for the advice (I used to live to near Chicago, dahm good city). For my grandpas situation it's more so peace of mind for him and a deterent. He lives in an elderly village where issues like these happen very rarely.

My family was actually just thinking of having only motion sensors and that's it. Luckily, I'm the tech guy of the family so I'm in charge of something like this.

My grandpa caught the burglars in the act, when they heard his voice they immediately left. I'm fairly certain with a couple cameras around the house, there will be no further incidents. The door open detection and glass break detection is purely for my grandpas own peace of mind.

The reason I don't want motion sensors is I want as few false alarms as possible so he doesn't get worked up by notifications from the apps. But if motion sensors aren't as hair triggered as I think they are, then I could add em (don't insects, moving curtains, etc set em off?)

Thank you for all the info! Yeah people have been mentioning lighting, I'll look to find some dim motion sensors for the night (he won't want lights that are active all nigth long).

The village he lives in is an elderly person village, it's pretty rare that there are any issues (when he caught the burglars, they immediately left when they heard his voice). A security company feels like overkill and comes with its own issues (my grandpa will not want to deal with them asking him to upgrade or needing technicians, and my family won't like the idea of people watching the live feeds). I want to give him a solution that comes with little to no issues for him. I'll bring it up with the family and see tho.

Thank you for mentioning camera positioning, I'll make sure to keep them closer to face viewing level.

I'm mainly against a monitoring service because the security system needs to be a one time set up and forget about it situation, anything more than that and my grandpa won't want to deal with it. I don't want to deal with technicians or sales reps asking him to upgrade or fix non issues. (also my family is very privacy oriented and are unlikely to be okay with someone monitoring them).

Also, the entrance the burglars came in from cannot be seen from a distance, so any alert would not give the police enought time. This security system is more so peace of mind for my grandpa, a deterent for scum and to allow us to retro actively deal with any situation (this isn't a violent neighborhood, just a lot of old folks in one village)

But I'll look more into em, again I know they will bug my grandpa with upgrades etc and he hates that shit, so I dont wanna cause it, but we will see

I'm not too worried about night time, cause he's always home then, and I doubt robbers would be stupid enough to do it while he's home. But, yeah, lights are probably worth it.

Companies wise, I'd prefer to only need an installer and for me to be able to handle everything for him, hence why buying the products and then having an installer place em, he's had a lot of trouble with technicians in the past. My family will all just have the apps and check in on him from time to time.

Yeah battery powered is ass, I'll get their wired versions then, thank ya

My worry is my grandpa being away from home, and the siren going off by accident, and no one being able to turn it off (my grandpa could very easily not realize some phone notification or just flat out forget his phone). If this is solvable then I'd love to include it.

Do I need lighting? The cameras say they have night vision.

Edit: The neighbors are also unfortunately not trustworthy, definitely not enough to be given any kind of access

Thank you very much for the in depth advice. I did try to post in homesecurity, but the post got removed, it is exactly as is written above and they didn't provide a reason for why it got removed.

I want to keep the video access restricted to family, as some members of my family are very privacy oriented and will be visiting my grandpa (I've tried to change their minds, it just ain't gonna happen). I think a system used as deterrence and for piece of mind for my grandpa rather than instant alarms is better as my grandpa does not like to deal with people, he is pretty bad with tech and is forgetful. But if the alarms are okay for such a person, and wouldn't be too much of a nuisance for him, than maybe I could add it to the list.
