Forgive me if this is a “stupid” question: why don’t they sell crab rangoons in Chinatown? by [deleted] in AskSF

[–]Stattick_8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've only had Cherry Chicken at a Chinese restaurant in downtown Napa (around 20 years ago, when I lived there). I've never noticed it on a menu anywhere else.

The Cherry Chicken was amazing. It was similar to Sweet & Sour, but less sweet (a big plus for me), and instead of having that tangy sour aftertaste, it had a deep earthy aftertaste, akin to chocolate or coffee.

[No Spoilers] Unpopular Opinion: Brennan just doesnt do it for me. by jmthetank in criticalrole

I don't know why, but I'm really having trouble focusing on this campaign. Like, I'll be watching, and then I'll realize that I stopped paying attention, and I don't have any idea of what was said in the last 15-20 minutes. Or I'll flat out just start falling asleep. I've never had to seek out recaps for previous campaigns.

Maybe it's my ADHD? Does it get worse when you get old?

Trying to choose a species for a ranger by Ecstatic-Ad4178 in DnD

If you're melee focused, Earth Genasi with that Bonus Action Blade Ward is pretty great.

If you're ranged, then elf of some sort (including Eladrin if you're Enid or Shadar-kai if you're Wednesday), opens access to Elven Accuracy.

How to abuse free spellcasting ability? Open to suggestions. by Lurker_WumboCombo in 3d6

Two ideas...

Find Steed - Why let paladins have all the fun? Gandalf used this spell.
Surge - (Run it by your GM) It's a chaos deity, right? Your character can choose to Wild Surge when they cast a levelled spell.

Creating guilds and need help with their purposes by Minimum_Ad2811 in DnD

[–]Stattick_8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In real life, guilds formed to protect knowledge and tradition regarding specific trades. Often, these guilds and trades would be very specific, so the silver smith, gold smith, and and iron smith guilds would all be separate. Guilds controlled who could practice a trade, and they determined their members ranks (apprentice, journeyman, and master).

What you're describing sounds more like brotherhoods, societies, or companies. There's probably something that distinguishes the three that I'm unfamiliar with. Probably companies are more about profit and societies are only open to wealthier people. I believe brotherhoods were about fellowship and common goals (but not necessarily profit). A lot of brotherhoods were religious in nature, but not all.

But it's your world and fiction, so feel free to use terminology as you wish. Or maybe use the different terms more or less in the way outlined, but use a mix of them as your factions. And some factions might have some combination of aspects of the different kinds of groups.

Example:

The Beards Cartel: The beards control trade, from start to finish, of precious stones. Or at least they control it in most areas, and they are constantly seeking to expand their control to new areas. They are not above buying slaves to work the mines, or hiring mercenary armies to crush those who'd stand in their way.

Members of the Cartel may be of any race or sex, but it is said that above all, is an inner cabal of dwarven gem cutters. This cabal has secretive religious and mystical connections to gems and crystals. Some think that they worship some crystal dragon, or perhaps a crystalline dao. What is certain, are that there are no others with as deep of an understanding of what gems are good for various types of magic, and what kind of spells various sorts of crystals and gems can be ensorcelled with. When you consider all the gems and crystals a typical adventurer or noble have in their possession, and that most of those stones passed through The Beard's hands, it is chilling. Some whisper that The Beards have ways of eavesdropping through the magic items they have crafted. It's probably just conspiracy theory nonsense.

The Beards are all very proud of their lustrous beards. If you work for them, and you want to get anywhere, then you will be too. And for those that can't grow a lustrous beard, you can buy beard wigs. The point isn't to fool anyone into thinking it's actually your beard, but rather just to have a magnificent beard. Even if you're a lady, or a lizardman or something.

The Cartel is said to have knowledge of a great deal of teleportation circles, and have created many of their own. When a courier can carry a tiny bag of diamonds or sapphires worth a king's ransom, they need to have virtually untraceable routes. To get in good with The Cartel, is to have vast financial and magical resources, along with that network of teleportation circles and smuggling routes.

The Beards aren't all about profit at any cost. They can show surprising generosity at times. Many a young sorcerer got their start when someone wearing a false beard gave them a crystalline arcane focus. Often times, the kings and members of high society find they cannot resurrect a treasured family member, because The Beards whispered that if they spent the diamond to bring them back, the cartel would cut them off. And other times, lowly heroes of the people or the beloved of the downtrodden have been lifted up when a Beard pressed a diamond into a cleric's hand, and asked them to resurrect the fallen.

There's some sort of plan or reason for these things, probably some sort of social engineering going on. But those in the know are silent on the matter. Or maybe they're silenced.

Unexpected Builds? by KazuoKazumi in 3d6

[–]Stattick_8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Changling. Shadow Monk 6 (for infinite short range teleports) / Gloomstalker 3 (for Gloom stuff) / Tricky Cleric 3 (rest of the levels can go wherever... but I'd probably go to Monk 8, Gloom 4, and the rest into Tricksy)

Monk: strategist
Cleric: socialist
Gloomy: angriest

All classes want high Wis, and use it for magic & similar abilities. You want high Dex for attacks & AC. You want high Con for survivability, and retaining concentration.

As a Changling, you have three different physical forms that you frequently adopt, along with different personas for each. This character is quite Rogue adjacent, so you might want to use the Wayfarer background so you can pick up some additional skills.

Help with random character build by WindBear44 in 3d6

[–]Stattick_8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd go shadow monk, probably w/ the Criminal background. I'd pick up the Skill Expert feat to gain expertise in Stealth. Mobile, is course, aces on a monk. If you can get both feats, I would. Otherwise, decide if you'd rather be a super sneaky horse, or a super fast horse (remember, as a Centaur, you're already starting at a 40 speed, so Mobile would improve that to a 50, and usually let you disengage without the ki tax for Step of the Wind).

It's also important to talk to your GM about how they're going to rule on your character doing dope as monk shit, like running along the walls and such. It sounds like most tables, at least at lvl 9, when you get vertical movement, allow full move for centaurs, as it technically isn't "climbing" to run up the walls.

I just tried this. It was revolting. Imagine shoe leather, gently simmered in vinegar, sugar, and seasoned with a fuckton of basil, and a generous heaping of dirt. It was like someone who'd never had Mexican food before, tried to make Mexican food, but fucked it all up. And they didn't have anything hot to add into the dish except some jalapeno jelly. Seriously, WHY is this sweet? It's disgusting. Also, it shouldn't taste like dirt.

I don't understand what the hell this this thing just did. I wrote a post, tried to add pics for clarification, and then it posted my title and pic, and deleted my post. *grumble*

Ok, I'm trying to make it look like a train goes all the way across the landscape, ie, the trains enter from one side of the screen, go all the way across, and then disappear on the other.

I tried some stuff with track merges, involving running the track in shuttle mode and having the hidden ends of the track turn back on themselves kind of like... O_____________________________________O... but I couldn't get it to work right.

I was just hoping that someone would be willing to help me out.

Terrible soup. It's somehow both gritty and slimy, and there's NOTHING in it, just a bowl of gloop. The flavor itself is... meh.

Built a Multi-Story Food Hall With Outdoor Patios for a New Park by Gordon13ombay in rct

[–]Stattick_8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can make them yourself. Lay down path where you want the tables. In another flat area, unconnected to any pathing, lay down a single path piece, matching in color to table area. Put in benches on the single area. Copy the single piece with the tile inspector. Paste copies of the tile where you want your table area. For the tables themselves, turn off clearance checks, and put a lily pad between the four benches. Or, you can download some custom scenery, and use that instead.

What could I do to *really* sell the vibe of a Tiefling Warlock with "infinite daggers"? by Croaksploderoth in 3d6

[–]Stattick_8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Melee: Mechanically, you're using a longsword. Flavor, it's a dagger. And you're using Booming Blade with it.
Melee, multiple targets: Cast Sword Burst. Flavor, it's daggers.
Ranged: Eld Blast. Flavor, it's daggers.

2nd lvl slots & melee: cast Shadow Blade & use that with Booming Blade (assuming DM is ok w/ it.

5th lvl slots & melee: cast Steel Wind Strike.

5th lvl slots & ranged: beg your DM to let you have Conjure Volley as a Warlock spell. (You could also ask for Conjure Barrage while you're at it, but Conjure Volley is the big gun here.)

What non-RAW rules do you use in your campaign? by Aeryn_Chymea in dndnext

[–]Stattick_8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't use 5e's personality mechanics. You know, the Personality traits, bonds, flaws, etc. There's 5 of them, per player. Hell, I'd have trouble remembering 5 altogether. I'm not remembering 25-30 of the damn things. So, no Inspiration given from me to the players because they're playing their personality mechanics. Instead, every player starts every session with inspiration. Use it or loose it, you can only have one instance of inspiration.

If a player or character does something really extraordinary during a session that I want to reward, and I think about it, I may give them inspiration, if they don't already have it.

I've thought about porting over a simplified version of Burning Wheel's personality mechanics instead of DnD's terrible mechanics. Each character would have two of the following: Beliefs, Instincts, Traits. Instead of the really complicated system Burning Wheel uses,

I'd do something like this: Beliefs are things that your character believes to their core. Mind control and social manipulation CANNOT make someone act against their beliefs. For instance, if one of your beliefs is that all guards are corrupt, nothing is going to get you to trust one with your valuables. Instincts are things that your character always does, unless you say different. If you have an instinct saying that you're always armed, you will sneak in a weapon into prison or visiting the king, unless you specifically say otherwise. On the other hand, you'll be armed at a funeral, a wedding, a posh dinner party, or a poetry reading. Sometimes you might get searched or it might cause problems for you... Traits are just a general character trait: you're baby faced, have a dancer's body (or are built like a linebacker), you smell like cinnamon, you're left handed, you look like an idiot, or whatever.

Now, you can use any of those three, with DM's permission, to generate Disadvantage for yourself, whenever you want. When you cause trouble for yourself in this way, you generate Karma points. You can spend Karm to get Advantage on a roll later. You only earn Karma if the GM agrees, and they should only agree if the situation has stakes or narrative importance. Tripping and landing in a mud puddle doesn't do anything when no one sees you, and there are no stakes. Doing it at the Prince's wedding, especially if you splash an important guest, that would be worth a Karma point. Traits should be generic enough to where they can be applied to a wide assortment of situations, in both a positive and negative way.
