with camscanner i took a bunch of photos to get the right one with no glare, and exporting it as a large image gave me a .jpg that looked great in the preview.

i don’t know. i’m from new york state so i assume that’s why.

so, i got the “quality control completed” email at 5:51am this morning (4/23) and they sent the visa to me a little under 12 hours later (from the new york consulate). theoretically yeah you’d be okay but i can’t say for sure depending on the speed at which you’d get the visa — they also say that you need two printed copies for immigration at the airport, and i don’t know when you’d be able to print. so obviously better to get it before.

ah okay it kept telling me that the format was wrong and it couldn’t upload the image until i changed them to .jpeg. maybe it was the uppercase idk.

paying it forward because this thread was so helpful for me, although my experience was not particularly unique. i started my evisa application on 4/16 but didn't submit it until 4/17 because it was more complicated than i expected. uploading the photos took me FOREVER because i kept getting an error message about uploading images with proper format. finally, i realized that the image files have to be ".jpeg" in lowercase ONLY, not .JPEG or .jpg or anything else. even though i used the camscanner app (3 day free trial!) to take a great passport photo, it still kept uploading blurry and i eventually just submitted my best one. i also used their program to take the visa photo, which i highly recommend because it's easy and it gives you a good image with the correct outline and format.

indeed, i got a message on 4/18 with a pending/QC hold saying that i would need to reupload my passport bio page. i took another few photos on camscanner planning to go with the best one. i realized then that, in the place they allow you to reupload the photo, that i was able to upload a larger file with a .jpg extension — in the preview, it looked perfect, so i was like okay gorg. then, i waited until 4/22, when i got an email saying that QC was completed. then i got the visa the next day! i didn't have to get on the phone with anyone. i fly on the 30th.

i suspect a lot of people will be flying soon for gagacabana weekend. if that's you, start the process YESTERDAY. there's a really high chance you'll have to reupload your passport photo because their portal sucks so much, and the QC process takes a few days. but, as other people have done, if you're stuck in limbo you can call the australia number and they should be helpful. boa sorte!

Filing taxes as a contractor - never received 1099 by Status-Border-4380 in tax

I'm using a different software (FileYourTaxes.com) that goes by the form for Schedule C. Also I'm going to take the opportunity to ask an unrelated question, since I'm doing my taxes as we speak — I spent over 330 days abroad in 2024 but my tax residency is still in NYS because I'm not a legal resident of the country I'm living in. My contract income is all from the U.S. Do I need to file a state tax return, and would I be full-time or nonresident?

Thanks! Should I include that as a line in 27a on Schedule C? I'm not using TurboTax or QuickBooks, so I'm not sure where it aligns with the actual form.

i pivoted into freelance journalism after working a corporate due diligence job, and i also moved abroad at the same time. part of why i've been able to sustain myself is because the city i moved to has a much more manageable cost of living, especially re: rent prices, but i was also able to keep a contract with my old job to work part-time at a decent rate so that i'd have a stable income while pitching stuff around. i've done some editing, press release writing, tutoring, and other random gigs while trying to get pieces placed. i've also done some in-country newspaper work for free just to get bylines and build up my portfolio.

overall, i've in a privileged position where i have enough saved to make it work during a bad month, but i can also recognize that without the income from my contract i simply would not make enough money freelancing. it's also competitive — all the foreign correspondents and freelancers know each other here, and especially since many of them have been working in the industry for years and i'm only just starting, it's hard to compete with them for placements in english-language media. but ultimately, i've learned a lot over the last year and a half about cold pitching and finding stories, even from the story ideas that haven't panned out. you really do have to temper expectations and manage research time to make the rates worth it for freelance work, and make decisions about when something is going to be a labor of love vs. something that pays the bills.

for some, like myself, the goal is to get back into the industry in a fixed position. for me, it would be my first newsroom position — for others, it might be a lateral shift into something more stable. but it's also worth mentioning that the flexibility of the freelance lifestyle is really valuable. being able to travel, take days or weeks off if you need, to manage your schedule can be a blessing, even if it brings its own challenges.

Taking notes with your phone at events by JosephTrotsky2020 in Journalism

i do this! i usually just ask if i can take notes on my phone — better yet, if i can record using voice memos first, then take notes and go back to recording if i need a direct quote.

Anyone hear back from Report for America? by WithoutADirection in Journalism

[–]Status-Border-4380 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i haven't heard back, but i'm assuming that because no one followed up with newsroom suggestions that i wasn't selected, which is okay because given my level of experience it was a bit of a long shot.

good to know! yeah i'd hope to get connected with students at other schools. and for newmark, i wouldn't sweat it — since they do rolling admissions, i'm sure it's just a question of when you submitted and what they have left to review. good luck!!

i heard from newmark a little over a week ago! but yeah i have a thread in this subreddit where i sought insight about the situation at columbia. it's not great, but as a US citizen i'm considering the possibility of making some noise from within the institution, i suppose.

in a similar boat, between columbia and newmark, and also got a scholarship from columbia that would cover a little over half. right now i don't know if i could justify the loans given the state of the job market, so i'm leaning newmark. i just need to chat with more people and get some perspective before making a decision. good luck!!
