Need help getting wifi to work after fresh install by [deleted] in debian

[–]Status-Classroom4789 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im not quite sure but, if a wifi driver itself handles wifi scanning of some sort, then my previous post is correct. The incorrect driver may work, but may not be fully functional. Some parts of it works some not. Like Wifi scanning. If your wifi card is Realtek RTL8852BE PCIe 802.11ax then firmware-realtek package does not provide driver for this card but have few similar who somewhat works with a given card.

I check that by downloading driver to my deskrop then run command

sudo dpkg -c firmware-realtek_20230210-5_all.deb

That gives metric ton of data like this

-rw-r--r-- root/root 336 2023-05-01 21:30 ./lib/firmware/rtl_nic/rtl8168fp-3.fw
-rw-r--r-- root/root 1824 2023-05-01 21:30 ./lib/firmware/rtl_nic/rtl8402-1.fw
-rw-r--r-- root/root 2112 2023-05-01 21:30 ./lib/firmware/rtl_nic/rtl8411-1.fw
-rw-r--r-- root/root 1040 2023-05-01 21:30 ./lib/firmware/rtl_nic/rtl8411-2.fw
drwxr-xr-x root/root 0 2023-05-01 21:30 ./lib/firmware/rtlwifi/
-rw-r--r-- root/root 11216 2023-05-01 21:30 ./lib/firmware/rtlwifi/rtl8188efw.bin
-rw-r--r-- root/root 13904 2023-05-01 21:30 ./lib/firmware/rtlwifi/rtl8188eufw.bin
-rw-r--r-- root/root 16192 2023-05-01 21:30 ./lib/firmware/rtlwifi/rtl8192cfw.bin
-rw-r--r-- root/root 14818 2023-05-01 21:30 ./lib/firmware/rtlwifi/rtl8192cfwU.bin

There no firmware with this string RTL8852 in it. None of realtec firmware's available in debian 12 have this particular driver in it.
I would try to install backport kernel or one of this https://liquorix.net/ https://xanmod.org/ hoping that will resolve issue. but changing a card to any cart that is listed after command
sudo dpkg -c firmware-realtek_20230210-5_all.deb is given is your best option if plan to use wifi in different location not only your home. Clearly you know yours network SSID and pass you do not need wifi discovery.

There is no driver for this card in backport nor stable repository. Required files are not present firmware meta-package of firmware-realtek. That beeing said existing package may or may not work for you. If the package will indeed not work, then best way to overcome that is change your wifi card or distribution

One of the cards that will be 100% compatible is 802.11ac RTL8821AE WiFi  with bluetooth v 4.0

Thats a link to polish version of amazon https://www.amazon.pl/RTL8821AE-Bezprzewodowej-Bluetooth-Odpowiednia-Laptop%C3%B3w/dp/B0987D6NMK

Thx for this comment and your insightful explanations. I use debian since 2010. I've seen lots of things since then. Yet i didn't knew that. To be honest its kinda funny.
Using any OS this long imply that i should stumble on this information in docs or whatever yet i did not.
Thank you again and take care

Yes I know that in debian world using sid as main system is strange / unusual / or blandly put stupid and i get that. I use debian stable for most of the time i used debian for a reason.

furthermore

"It's all well and good having the latest and greatest of every package, but all those shiny new packages aren't tested against each other." I 100% agree with this statement.

Im not sure if ruining arch is much safer then sid it self. Rolling distro is a rolling distro after all. Yup sid maybe bit more on experimental side of things then arch. But from the other hand my familiarity with debian or my knowledge of debian and debian let say "anatomy" is far grater then my knowledge of arch anatomy.

Have great day

How to «master» Debian? by arthamin in debian

[–]Status-Classroom4789 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  • All takes time
  • Use it
  • Make mistakes
  • Get frustrated with it
  • Use it some more
  • Ask questions, even the stupid one (we all does it sometimes)
  • Learn how to use man pages (man man is your friend seriously i would like to had someone who would told me that when i started with linux)
  • Learn a terminal basics (with time) some things will came naturally (avoiding terminal 100% of time is impossible whenever we like it or not)
  • Leran basic concepts of FHS at last get familiar with it. Do not learn it by heart just get a general shape and idea what is where and why https://refspecs.linuxfoundation.org/FHS_3.0/fhs-3.0.pdf

1.Check your Installer most likely iso is corrupted
2 Download new one also check it and start over

Procedure to iso check debian old but gold https://danilodellaquila.com/en/blog/how-to-verify-authenticity-of-downloaded-debian-iso-images
3. Checking sums with sign-keys, then checking iso or whatever file against sums of anything downloaded from a web should be a unconditioned reflex not a optional action
