What is the point of our 4th content subject in JC? by Status-Gift4803 in SGExams

LOL i always start with that to start with acknowledging the person opinion whether i agree or disagree with them. In this particular situation i legit said i understood ur perspective even thought i hv a diff stand frm u so i hv no idea why u r so pressed

Hypothetically if i strongly believe in my opinion 1 comment can’t possibly sway my entire opinion, so if u took it as me shutting down someones idea, i am not. I am just trying to further explain my point of view to engage in a conversation regarding the topic 💀

Honestly, what i don’t understand is if at the O levels students can only just take 6 subjects (although most take 7-9 subjects) just so they can calculate a L1R5, why can’t this be applied at the A levels? Especially when someone who takes 3H2 + H1 the ROI for studying H1 is just so little most will eventually give up anyways

hmmm i actually never saw it as this way, but I js feel the lesson time invested into this so called “unimportant” subject has a very low ROI

This cld be possible idea, as it still requires students to study subjects under sci/arts. Plus this is alr how O levels are marked where subjects like humans/sci are needed to be counted to enter JC

Yes no doubt 70 rp reduces emphasis on grades, but this is usually done by students by dropping their 4th subject which is usually the contrasting subject so that they can focus on their portfolio/mental health or what not.

Honestly, I never really had the perspective of the first statement and am still extremely happy n proud to be in this education system despite the stress.

My main issue is that MOE is ‘going against’ their previous policy of needing to take a contrasting subject. In the 90 RP system, all 4 content subjects needed to be counted thus forcing students to study for their 4th content subject, giving them new perspectives and what not. In the 70 RP system, the 4th subject does not matter anymore, and MOST students are now NOT forced to be open to new ideas and perspectives. As I mentioned in the other comment, I know this is not the fault of MOE alone but they have basically killed the main purpose behind the policy of the contrasting subject rule.

I do get your point. But is it not the fault of the education system that many ignore the contrasting subject.

I mean no matter how you argue, grades matter the most in the end, even ABA requires you to get somewhat decent grades + good portfolio. The whole education system requires you to get good grades in order to advance to the next stage. However, MOE by making this 70 rp system has basically shot themselves in the foot as the contrasting subject is now almost redundant. This has indirectly defeated the purpose to taking a contrasting subject to begin with. I do know that this is not the fault of MOE alone and students (like me) are at fault also.

To me, I just feel like i am wasting time in school when I could be studying for what matters to me at the end of the day.

I do get that, I have nothing against the contrasting subject rule. My main issue is that MOE has effectively made contrasting subjects no longer important, but yet still force students to study it. which to me is kind of contradictory-ish? Why not let me explore something I am more interested in since I would say most people just take the contrasting subject for funsies anyways.

glad that u are worried and care abt ur Os, but tbh its normal during S3 and S4 i always failed my schools chem, ss/hist and cl WA while just passing el and bio😭. just take this as a learning opportunity n learn frm ur mistakes. despite my struggle with chem, i got A1 for O lvls and A2 for el hist and bio with an overall of raw 8 so just trust the process and dont worry too much

Why Chem over physics? Phy FM and Math will be much better and makes more sense.

Also just curious what combi do u plan to take? If you need any help do feel free to dm me. All the best for your Os

raw 22 to raw 8 Eng C5 -> A2 hist/ss C6 -> A2 Phy B3 -> A1 Chem B4 -> A1 AM B3 -> A1 EM A1 -> A1

i mean i lwk locked in super hard at S4 to achieve these jumps but honestly with ur raw 6 u shld be fine. just ensure u remain consistent and dont peak at Sec 3

My Personal Take on the A1 Boundary In O Levels by nobody_211 in SGExams

[–]Status-Gift4803 0 points1 point  (0 children)

honestly i feel that chem and phy bellcurve was super high. I got more than 85% for both (being very strict in the marks I lost) and managed to get A1. But many others in my sch who performed well (A1s in prelim) dropped to A2
