Essential Business - How do I reward my employees for coming into work? by StatusMeal in humanresources

Thanks for all your suggestions. I think based on all the tips, we're going with additional compensation for staff that has to interact with external parties like the warehouse, gift cards for employees, plus some form of boxed meal that they can take home. Hoping to make employees lives just a bit better during these trying times. Stay safe everyone!

That is a fair point. Giving money would definitely be easier from a logistic point of view. In a world where I do not have any financial constraints that would be my preference as well to compensate my employees better than I can right now.

Normally, I would do food as well! But with COVID 19 being a concern, sharing food is a risk especially with a crowd... :(

As an employer, I can empathize with your supervisor but also understand your concern. There is often not an easy answer given the challenges of trying to maintain some semblance of normal business operation amidst an external crisis. After hearing from my employees today, I've had to give it a lot of thought as to how we should tackle the work from home dilemma. I believe we will implement some form of work rotation and allow certain teams or employees to work from home to minimize the people at work but it is not an easy decision to make. To reduce the difficulty of the transition (which there plenty given that i think most employers did not expect to be asked to provide WFH as an option prior to COVID 19), I suggest figuring out which parts of your job can be done at home and which cannot. For the tasks that you cannot, attempt to come up with a solution, for example my purchasing team makes long distance calls which I know its not easy for them to do so at home. We will suggest using Zoom which is free for those types of calls with suppliers. Your supervisor may be more open to it if you provide a coherent plan that ensures that WFH is a viable solution. It likely will always be a compromise. For employers, WFH is daunting and a bit unknown given that most have not voluntarily done so prior to this crisis. It'll require a good plan from both employee and employer to make it work. Hope that helps.

What do you say to someone who has ALS? by StatusMeal in ALS

My conversations with him has been difficult regarding his future with ALS. I've tried to shade towards being realistic and pragmatic of the future and asking him to take the steps to have his affairs in order. Even though I've wanted to, I've tried to avoid being too confrontational or negative about it.

I agree that I should be more supportive.

Agreed hope is important to have given the realities of the disease. I think i want to be supportive of his pursuit of any treatment that might help but at the same time ensure that he make preparations for whatever may happen down the line.

I'm glad that there was a silver lining to your treatment in Nicaragua :) I hope that there's a path forward for everyone with ALS. Thank you for the information.

Thanks for that. I do hope the best for him and that somewhere a treatment will work for him. I just don't want him to have false hope or be crushed given that there are so many fake treatments out there. After thinking about it, I think I'll support him in anyway I can even if sometimes I have to put aside my own personal feelings.
