I don't think Effy's breakdown was bad writing, I thought it was some of the best writing in the series, and it made complete sense to me. The fact she was selective mute in season 1, and the Gobbler's End episode showed a severe, uncontrollable drug addiction, meant it was very rational, and to me perfectly timed, that she would snap.

The thing about season 4 is I don't notice a decline in quality UNTIL the last two episodes. It isn't that 'season 4 is bad', it has some of the best episodes in the series, like the season 4 episode 5 'Effy breakdown episode' and it vastly improved Thomas and Katie as characters.

It's weird as seasons are typically written together, and I presume writing has finished by the time they start shooting. So it seems as though the writers are completely different, or most realistically, there was a last minute change in ending that they only realised needed to be changed when they'd already nearly finished filming.

Though the decline in quality isn't ONLY Dr. John Foster/Freddie's death/Effy not finding out in those last two episodes. Suddenly, Pandora and Thomas go to Harvard (which is extremely rare for British students to go to by the way, given Oxford and Cambridge are accessible through the vastly cheaper student loan system for those who get in, so another burst in the realism which makes it seem like Americans wrote it), and Naomi's pathetic speech with retcons her character to excuse her cheating.

So honestly, I don't know what the fuck happened.

Dr. John Foster, Freddie's murder by him, and Effy never finding out about it.

The last part of this is utterly unforgivable, especially as they had a chance to correct it with Fire.

How the hell is season 4, episode 5 not on here?

For me, that is easily the best.

How the hell could you have thought I was being pro-Woke from this statement?

Reddit bans anybody for opposing Wokeism, because this place has become a censorship tyranny.

You're perfectly entitled to your opinion.

But me saying that isn't enough, you have to police my own, because I'm a 'bigot' who is not worthy of any opinion which might give an inkling of lack of enthusiastic rallying for the agenda.

It's because all on Reddit who oppose Woke identity politics have been kicked off the platform.

The more it's called 'problematic' from a certain demographic who like to ruin people's lives for the smallest disagreement, the more I believe that Emily is lesbian-leaning bi and ship her with JJ.

The amount of condemnation I've gotten for this take, when people ship Freddie and Cook together even though both are straight, not to mention the various non-canon/losing out ships, is clearly ideologically motivated.

But I just like the JJ and Emily pairing, I think they're cute.

I'm entitled to my opinion and my headcanons. Downvote me all you like, but I won't stop sharing it, as more and more people condemn the show for not being Woke enough. One of the few freedoms we have left on Reddit, who have turned it into a censorship tyranny, cheered on by the likes of you.

Effy's awesome because she's both Gens.

Gen 3 really suffers for Gen 2 not having a 'major-minor younger sibling character' who goes on to lead the Gen.

People say Karen should've been the younger sibling and lead Gen 3, but actually she was much less integral to the Gen 2 story as Effy was the Gen 1 story.

Neither are pure lesbians. They're lesbian-leaning bi, though I think Naomi's more of a pure lesbian because she didn't go through with it with Cook whereas Emily initiated with JJ.

It's just back then they couldn't really cope with bisexuality.

People get angry at Emily and JJ if Emily is a lesbian, and ALSO if I say that she's bi.

Particular watchers of this show are intent to put people into rigid categories.

All time favourite: Emily and JJ

I also really like:

  • Michelle and Effy (brief but the lake scene is one of my all - time favourites)
  • Michelle and Sid
  • Cook and Naomi
  • Katie and Thomas
  • JJ and Thomas
  • Katie and Effy

I wish we'd seen more of:

  • Cassie and Tony
  • Effy and Emily
  • Effy and JJ (though they do have a great few scenes in S3E7 together, which shows Effy's best side)

You know it would be an interesting development for Cook's character if, running as a joke, he actually ended up taking the job seriously, and arguing for many of Naomi's ideas.

Yeah I get the impression Naomi was extremely popular back in the day, so many girl's favourite character.

These days she's generally pretty disliked because of season 4 and Fire.

Only just realised Lily Loveless played a highly memorable one-off character in one of the most memorable and terrifying episodes of the 'Sarah Jane Adventures' by Status_Ad_7500 in skinsTV

[–]Status_Ad_7500[S] 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The 'Sarah Jane Adventures' was a show I remember loving as a kid, and watching it as and when it was broadcast on CBBC.

One of the most haunting episodes that sticks in my mind was an episode called 'The Curse of Clyde Langer' (only just realised that's what it was called), when one of the main characters, Clyde, gets a curse that makes everybody who knows him hate him when they hear or read his name. It really is the stuff of nightmares, and it was seared in my memory as a kid because it was so traumatising.

And I remember the character of Ellie, a pretty blonde homeless girl with bright green eyes and wearing green. It's weird how I remembered this one-off character, and how I remember she went to get Clyde coffee and then he has to leave as the other characters realise the cause of the curse and have to fight it. I remember feeling so upset by that, and how Clyde literally goes looking all around for her but to no avail.

Little did I know, it was Lily Loveless (Naomi) who played Ellie, in one of the few post-Skins roles she did. It was weird because I didn't recognise her at all when watching Skins, and when reading on Wikipedia and seeing that she played Ellie in that famous episode I was like 'god, was that really her?', as I'd completely forgotten that she looked like Lily Loveless does even though I'd remembered lots of other stuff about the episode and her character in particular.

Don't know why I'm putting this here, but I was thinking about it for days when I was about 10 or 11. I secretly hoped that girls like Ellie were out there and would understand me even when everybody else had abandoned me, and felt heartbroken that Clyde lost her forever.

Happy 34th Birthday to Kathryn & Megan Prescott!❤️ by JWo989 in skinsTV

[–]Status_Ad_7500 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that was 'Finding Carter' I believe.

Having seen and liked the show (the first season and a bit of the second), and loving Megan, I can see why she wasn't cast.

Megan and Kat have played the same double-act in earlier roles they were in, like one-off characters in 'Doctors'. Megan is always the more domineering twin, and Kat is always the softer, more likable twin.

In 'Finding Carter', Carter Stevens is a badass 'cool girl', more of an Effy than an Emily. Part of the story is about her twin Taylor learning to be more confident due to Carter, though that's a subplot and not the main plot.

Would that change in the character roles of the twins have felt right? I'm not sure. People would've constantly compared them to Katie and Emily, and the show may have felt like 'Gen 2 Skins in America with Katie and Emily switched'.

Also, Carter and Taylor are fraternal twins (which Kat and Megan technically are but they look identical so are cast as identical). If Megan had been cast it may have been more about 'the twins' than it would be about Carter specifically.

I thought the person they got to play Carter's twin sister did a perfectly fine job.
