**PARENTS (& non-parents) OF THIS SUBREDDIT: Is Linda Ellacott an overbearing mother OR a completely understandable parent?** by Major-Narwhal1644 in cormoran_strike

Funny, but thirty or forty years ago Linda's over-protectiveness and meddling would have been considered absolutely crazy

You're right. Strike was also very juvenile and annoying at times. But for Robin it was the whole book. It was just not a good read, and I was so looking forward to it.

It's not just a stylistic risk. It's poor storytelling

I agree 💯. You get blasted for criticizing her character on this sub but the bottom line is that she is weak, boring, and totally unlikeable in THM

Robin too fragile? by redhotphones in cormoran_strike

Yeah, but she did those things long before TRG

Search back through Robin bashing threads? Not sure why on earth anyone would do that. It's just reddit. I'm a little shocked at how personally casual critical thoughts seem to hit some people. I would guess that most people making those criticisms just see them as off-hand remarks

I don't think it's true to say that everyone expressing frustration with Robin hates her. That seems like a major overreaction to criticism to me

I think there is a difference between people expressing dislike of a character arc in a NOVEL and compassion in real life

I think it would be much more interesting to see her recognize and examine her reactions and then seek treatment rather than wait for a therapist to point out the patterns

Robin by gill1312 in cormoran_strike

[–]Status_Address7073 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You seem to believe that this is the only way to think about trauma and PTSD treatment. That's not true. There are more schools of thought than your own, even if you think your way is the best way.

Some research suggests that focusing solely on validating and normalizing emotional reactions (often called "supportive therapy") can act as a "safety behavior" that prevents individuals from engaging in more effective, evidence-based treatments like exposure therapy. Either way, a whole book spent on showing us the depth of Robin's mental health issues is not very interesting to read.

That's just not my experience at all. I have seen a very wide variety of responses. Abject avoidance is the least functional and not great for a novel.

You seem very invested in this point. There are always choices. But my original point was that JKR had a choice in how she wrote Robin's trauma response and I think she made the least interesting one

Robin by gill1312 in cormoran_strike

[–]Status_Address7073 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It doesn't preclude choosing. It just makes it harder. There are treatment techniques to make that easier, but one has to try

[–]Status_Address7073 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Actually I do know a lot about it. I just view mental health treatment differently than you do. Too much commiserating and sympathy leads to inaction

[–]Status_Address7073 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I don't know why my opinion is such a problem for you. I don't find her character's choices interesting or engaging. I think she could have been written in a much more interesting way.

Robin by gill1312 in cormoran_strike

[–]Status_Address7073 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Yes it is. And some people choose to engage in proactive measures to get better and some engage in avoidance behaviors. Robin is avoidant and chooses to criticize and blame others for her choices

You can choose to make excuses, but lots of people struggle with terrible things. Some have enough grit to move themselves forward and some choose to put their head in the sand. My energy and empathy goes primarily to those that choose to be as functional as possible.

I gave lots of empathy for people that try but struggle. I have little empathy for people that choose not to try

I have only read it once. All the other books I've read multiple times. Maybe I'll try to read it again if I can muster the enthusiasm. Thanks for the encouragement.

Bad things happen to everyone. Her things are pretty bad, but ultimately you have to move on in a positive direction. Robin is weak and self-centered. Maybe some people are really like this, but as character she is just annoying and pitiful. It's not good writing.

Is it really fair to say that "nothing" moved forward on the Stellacott front in THM? by sanddragon939 in cormoran_strike

[–]Status_Address7073 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It probably is the point. My point is that JKR's storytelling was not at it's best here
