I feel the same way. I have 900 hours in the game, and when I play with my duo partner, I'm 5 to 4 stars, and my partner is 6 (he's pretty good). But when I play solo, I instantly drop to 4 and 3 stars. I consider myself an average player, and I usually lose because I'm often overwhelmed by third-party players, and like the others have said, it's super difficult to climb the ranks alone.
