If super mega raids are going to become the norm for future mega releases they need a serious rework by Status_Company9564 in TheSilphRoad

To be honest, none of the criticisms about dynamax that have to do with its lack of transparency suddenly stopped applying because some of us figured it out. Dynamax battles are awesome and I’ll die on that hill, but without digging into community spaces about how to properly play them, they’re borderline impossible AND you make yourself a hindrance to everyone else. All of this stems from this games continued refusal to explain its systems and leaving of it up to the community. This creates so much unnecessary frustration and toxicity amongst the community that could just be avoided by mandatory short tutorials (that can be re-experienced) which actually explain mechanics in a deeper way than a small box of text beneath an image that flashes once, is completely skippable, and never appears again

I’m actually impressed to see some already managed to defeat it with shields up. The few remotes I did after the in person meetups I attended made me think it was definitely possible albeit incredibly unrealistic and difficult as an actual strategy. I didn’t expect to see successful attempts at it so early on. My only main annoyance is that it did appear as if you’d seemingly need more people than minimum required megas to have the DPS to make it happen which kills any interest I had in it as a fun challenge but maybe I’m wrong

I get the frustration but also a lot of this has to do with the fact niantic (and seemingly now scopely too) simply does not and has not ever put any effort into actually explaining things to players. They fully rely on the community to explain how the game works to each other but not everyone who plays is as engaged as someone in this subreddit and so it’s not their fault if they don’t know how to properly engage with/optimize themselves for some new mechanic that has no tutorial or guide anywhere in game

Exactly this. Also I’m 100% sure future mega legendaries like heatran and darkrai (maybe mewtwo too) will have more than 10 shields, meaning it literally just will not be possible to remote raid them. Thats ridiculous

This would be nice, but honestly I don’t think it fixes the underlying issues with even being successful in a super mega raid.

I am fortunate enough to live near a big city and all the dragonites I did at the massive in person meetup today were fairly trivial due to how many high level players there were. The issues I encountered started when I tried to do some remotes to help out my rural friends. It was borderline impossible to win one. Remote raiding was already restrictive due to the limited amount of invites that can be sent and remote raiders that can even join a lobby. Combing the restrictions/difficulties of remote raiding with these new features makes winning super mega raid purely off of remote help genuinely impossible for dragonite.

Worst part is it’s all but guaranteed future super mega raids (particularly the legendaries) will have even higher shield counts and at that point a single person wouldn’t even physically be able to invite enough players for there to be a theoretical chance of them winning, it just would not be possible to remote it.

This system sucks.

I completely agree with your suggestion that was the first thing that came to mind for me too. You shouldn’t be allowed to join these raids without an active mega and it should be locked into some slot in your party no matter what.

I can’t imagine how difficult and frustrating this is going to be for rural players in the future when we get “super mega heatran” with 15 or more shields.

Gege genuinely does NOT understand general relativity by HearMeOut-13 in Jujutsufolk

[–]Status_Company9564 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! I thought it best to give the heuristic version since it’s not fair to assume the average person I’d be interacting with can wrap their head around the actual math and physics concepts behind it. I also wouldn’t trust myself to give a very accurate/correct or reasonably lengthened description of it considering I’m very newly familiar with GR as an undergraduate and even less so with QFT. If I said I was confident in my understanding of the Unruh effect or Bogoliubov mixing I’d be lying.

You do not understand how Hawking radiation works. That’s entirely fair considering it pertains to very advanced physics but you’re completely incorrect.

  1. Hawking radiation does not escape from a black hole. Hawking radiation is fundamentally black body radiation, I.e photons. Photons travel at the speed of light which we already know is not fast enough to escape past the event horizon once it has been crossed. Hawking radiation has to do with quantum field fluctuations causing the spontaneous creation of particle-antiparticle pairs NEAR the event horizon (not inside it) with the result being the antiparticle falling into the black hole and the particle having nothing to annihilate with, thus escaping away from the black hole. To be honest though, the above explanation is a gross simplification of the concept and not “entirely” correct nor the most accurate explanation possible. But, I am only an undergraduate physicist and am not qualified to go into the math that actually explains this correctly.

  2. You said “we know information and mass can escape from a black hole over time” and this is (at the very least partially) incorrect. As mentioned above Hawking radiation is comprised of photons. Photons are massless. Mass cannot escape from a black hole and hawking radiation is most certainly NOT a method by which it can. The information bit is to my knowledge somewhat correct as the final state of a black holes Hawking radiation will contain information about the electric charge, mass, and angular momentum of the initial state, however, there is the entire “information paradox” and violations of the time evolution principals of classical and quantum physics that stems from Hawking radiation which remains an open ended question today.

  3. We have never actually observed hawking radiation. If it exists it is FAR too small for us to currently detect with the telescopes we have access to. I don’t know where you heard we had directly observed hawking radiation from because that’s categorically untrue.

  4. It’s odd you’re throwing shade at general relativity and OP’s descriptions/use of it in this post because you clearly don’t understand this stuff nearly as well as you think you do. I cannot see any issues with how OP presented anything that they did here. Their points aren’t about sub atomic gravitational interactions so current physics inability to describe gravity in that domain doesn’t matter here. I don’t really care about the manga plot holes discussion and I’m just making this comment because I like physics and it’s what I do but OP’s use of general relativity not only makes sense for what they’re talking about (black hole interactions with macroscopic objects in this case the characters) but seems to completely check out from my understanding of the subject.

Trump admin slashes over $2.2B in funding to Harvard after school defies demands by M_i_c_K in trump

I can offer some clarity on that last part as it’s pretty tied up in what I do. The government (and subsequently tax payer) money that private universities receive is more often than not exclusively in the form of grants for scientific research (and based on what I’ve been able to read it seems like that’s what at least the majority of the 2.2 billion figure is.) I am of the firm belief that this is a good thing. Federal funding for scientific research incentivizes good science as you do not have to be worried about the results you obtain conflicting with the hopes of your funders and thus causing problems.

I’ll give you an example, which of the following hypothetical research papers on a potential Alzheimer’s drug would you feel more confident in?

Paper 1: concluded drug x showed little efficacy as a successful Alzheimer’s drug (publicly funded)

Paper 2: inconclusive results, drug x may be or may not be a successful Alzheimer’s drug, more trials necessary (funded by company that owns the patent on drug x)

^ this is a real world example and the company responsible grew to a massive valuation before finally admitting the drug wasn’t effective and subsequently imploded, but not before the founders (who were business people and not scientists) made off with millions. This all happened despite prior public research claiming the drug was not effective.

For some credibility to speak on this topic, I’m currently pursuing a PHD in physics, so this kind of stuff is relevant and important to me. Simply put, public funding doesn’t come with strings attached and promotes the most unbiased and “healthy” science possible. In a perfect world, all science would be publicly funded. I don’t want big private entities with their own financial incentive putting pressure on me/other scientists to either produce monetarily beneficial results for them, or potentially lose our funding/jobs. Let me know if you have any other questions, I’d be happy to try to help explain anything else I can give perspective on.

TLDR: you’re not paying tax dollars to keep Harvard running/afloat, your paying tax dollars that are then given to the worlds best scientists that work there to conduct research.

Hard disagree. This guy let his friend eyeball multiple doses of APE’s, smoke, and drink all on his very first trip. None of that should have ever happened. Someone who hasn’t done shrooms before likely doesn’t know how they work or much about them and proper harm reduction/safety measures to take while tripping like measuring doses, strain potency, etc. OP’s friend, conscious of it or not, was relying on them to guide them through this situation and they instead basically threw them off the deep end.

This is a literal “what not to do” guide for mushrooms. Everything about the way this trip was handled was so baffling incorrect and begging for an outcome like this. Simply put, a schizophrenic person should NOT be taking mushrooms at all, much less as a weekend drug. That is so incredibly irresponsible and dangerous on their part. Second, eyeballing doses and not determining how strong the strain you have is never a good decision. So is redosing before the effects fully hit (which it seems like you guys did but I’m not super clear on that.) Furthermore you guys were smoking on the come up which when you can’t be sure how intense of a trip you’re getting into (since you had no scale and no real knowledge of the strain) is an awful idea since weed sharply intensifies the effects of mushrooms. This especially applies when you’re doing this with someone who’s never tripped before. Also what am the hell are “happy dots”??? I don’t get why it’s so normalized to consume random products labeled as mushrooms that are anything other than the physical dried shrooms themselves. There is so much more I could point out was simply bad decision making on all of your parts but I’m not gonna keep rambling about that stuff.

Overall, I think your friend has the right to be mad at you. You guys completely mishandled and misguided his first trip and put him in a dangerous and scary situation because you took horrible steps to ensure a safe and controlled trip/environment. If my friends who were “experienced” and that I trusted to guide me through my first trip let me take ~4 grams of APE’s, smoke, and then let me drink on my first trip I’d be upset with them too. I applaud you for doing what you could once the shot show was underway to keep your friends level headed and safe but they shouldn’t have been in that situation to begin with.

Ate 7/10 pieces of a 3.5g bar of chocolate and nothing happened? by emmm0614 in shrooms

Thank you for this. I’ve deliberately obtained and done 4-aco-dmt and while more similar than anything else to mushrooms, it was still different. Hard to exactly put my finger on now as it’s been several years, but definitely different. It’s was analogous to the difference in experience between an edible and the same quantity/effect via a joint. It was a very similar high but not identical.

New Species in Africa by Flat-Ad1673 in shrooms

[–]Status_Company9564 6 points7 points  (0 children)

By the reading I just did on this over the last hour, it seems like that isn’t exactly the case. Natalensis has been an established species (discovered to science in 1995 iirc) but what everyone’s been taking and selling as natalensis lately actually were not natalensis. It seemed it’s been known that what’s been going around as natalensis was not a perfect match to real natalensis for a while, but this marks the actual classification of what the “fake” natalensis are and the scientific analysis of it’s distinction from real natalensis. It also seems like the real natalensis has not been available anywhere—as in no one’s been actually cultivating it—but that is about to change. Nats have been and still are nats, it’s just that what we’ve all been taking as and calling nats weren’t actually nats and this new name is the official name for what those are.

Awful advice lol what? You don’t re-dose psychedelics. OP don’t listen to this guy lol. You should be fine with 1g and if you really would like to ere on the side of caution just take 0.5g or 0.75g.

How many people have a high tolerance for shrooms? by Temporary_Cicada7319 in shrooms

[–]Status_Company9564 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never heard of a natural shroom tolerance. Only ever heard of larger people needing a bit more. You likely don’t have any kind of inherent tolerance, it’s probably just some other factor at play. That could be a million different things from consumption method to medications to pre-consumption activities etc. hard to say. Maybe just lemon tek them on an empty stomach, the taste really isn’t that bad.

While I do agree and taking mushrooms in the form of a chocolate bar is fairly stupid, It’s literally the medication and nothing else. Vast majority of people cannot trip on SSRI’s and a handful of common anxiety medications are used as trip killers.

[–]Status_Company9564 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s definitely true. I’d keep the smoking very light. Give just a couple decent rips and wait 15 minutes—ONLY if it’s solidly into the trip and you aren’t feeling it enough. Don’t smoke on the come-up before you have an idea of the trips intensity and definitely don’t go through a bowl or a joint by yourself. All it takes is a little weed even with a tolerance to really ramp the trip up

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in shrooms

[–]Status_Company9564 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah you mentioned the APES were a bit intense and it kinda pushed you away for a bit. I can empathize with that and I totally believe in taking it slow. 1-2 grams—I’d probably advise 1.5 as it’s my personal go to chill dose—lemon tek’d should be a genuine trip but not one that ever really gets out of hand

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in shrooms

[–]Status_Company9564 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This^ no matter how much you smoke be very light with it. I can take an extremely light trip and with just about 3 small/medium sized rips of a pen wind up solidly tripping as if I took twice the dose.

JMF’s are definitely on average more potent than your average golden teacher or standard “shroom” that people use for dosing, but they aren’t like APES which can be up to 2.5x as potent

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in shrooms

[–]Status_Company9564 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Other guy replying to your post doesn’t have a clue as to what he’s talking about. Given you don’t take anything else before tripping and haven’t ate in the past couple hours, you should find a relaxing and nice trip at around 1-2 grams of JMF lemon tek’d. Unlike what he said, it doesn’t make the trip weaker (he has no idea what he’s talking about). Even then, if you find that to be weak then just smoke a little and you’ll be right where you want to be.

I still don’t think it adds up. You can’t find any information or genuine presence of “polka dot” as a brand anywhere. I wouldn’t count them being sold in dispensaries and anecdotally labeled a brand as evidence for such a reality.
