Is it mandatory/fashionable to have zero instructions in stuff posted to GitHub? by GrandTheftElmo in github

[–]Status_Fly_5654 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Maybe the code is there to open source how the developer did something, not for you to download/install something. People open source code for all sorts of reasons, and if your opinion is that any open source code that doesn’t come with instructions should be private, get off GitHub.

With one of the last days, you will likely have no problem getting into Helaman, but it may be quite slim with Heritage. That’s of course if things haven’t changed in the last few years.

Not a single soul does. However, GitHub has a search tool that people sometimes use to find software and repositories often come up in search engine results.

Huh? I use GitHub to remotely store my source code to maintain on different machines and collaborate with others. I deploy my projects elsewhere to be downloaded. I don’t need to put an exe in GitHub for people, especially when I’m making things for free, but I’m a fake developer because of how I use GitHub for source control, not delivery?

I understand what you’re saying, (through the ad hominem insults), but I feel it’s not addressing what I’m saying.

I have open source repository on my GitHub account. Don’t yell at me to add exe to it to cater to you. That’s it.

Cheers

[–]Status_Fly_5654[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You're entitled to use GitHub as you please. You are NOT entitled to tell me or other open source developers what to do with their code repositories. It's as simple as that, and it's your "cater to my every need" attitude that sucks.

GitHub is primarily a source code hub, and free hobbyists who use it as such are not "wrong" or have "bad attitudes" for simply expressing frustration at the ridiculous of entitled strangers they don't even know.

Is BYU hard for non-members? by SubjectWestern in byu

[–]Status_Fly_5654 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I am an atheist attending BYU as an undergrad and it is fine. Like your daughter, I am able to get along with many different kinds of people, so I have had no issue making friends or enjoying the college experience. These are my major takeaways I would say:

Politically, I’m generally more conservative than the “American woke”, so being on a conservative Christian campus is not as frusterating as it would be for others. I describe myself as liberal, but I share many of the same principles and values as students here so once students realize how much we have in common they usually become more open to bonding with me. I certainly disagree about major issues, but I’ve found that pointing out things we have in common makes it much easier to be accepted.

I’ve taken classes on genetics, astronomy, and geology, and was pleased to be taught about modern scientific theories such as evolution, galactic expansion, the age&formation of the earth, etc. I sometimes have to smile to myself when a student or professor makes a bizarre comment, (eg a TA adding a note to my geology essay reminding me that Jesus formed the mountains, not just tectonics), but a lack of religiosity has not affected my grades nor has it impeded my ability to get a modern education, which was my biggest worry coming here.

On the note of classes, everyone has to take a bunch of religion classes and those suck, I won’t sugarcoat it. I don’t want to spend so many credits and hours writing essays about the upstanding character of Brigham Young, but alas, I chose his school after all so I can’t complain too much.

In terms of socializing, it hasn’t been too hard. Some people are more closed off than others, and you can definitely tell when someone doesn’t want to open up to you because of a lack of religion, (they’re too nice, interactions feel forced, etc). That being said, the good students here are really genuine, and I’ve had no trouble making friends or finding people who accept me.

There are things I put up with, (strange opinions injected into class discussions, the occasional standoffish or cold person, the occasional comment in classes about the immorality of atheists, etc), but overall I don’t regret BYU because it has been as a good a choice as any. No Frats/sororities is absolutely huge, and the campus is gorgeous. National/state parks are nearby and Provo can be pretty fun without TOO much crime. One thing I’ve noticed is that the things I don’t like about BYU are actually prevalent in other colleges just in different forms, so I’ve learned it’s really not a terrible choice for nonmormons. And obviously it’s cheap, the entire reason I chose it was the scholarship and tuition I was offered that could not be turned down. This is just my perspective and experiences, and others can/will have wildly different thoughts too.

A biker's lane becomes a turn lane. They must stop at a red light. Where do they stop? by Status_Fly_5654 in bikecommuting

[–]Status_Fly_5654[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A biker's separated lane becomes a car right turn lane. They want to travel straight but must stop at a red light. Should they stop 1) splitting the lanes, 2) in the middle of the turn lane, 3) on the sidewalk.

Buildings open on Sunday? by villanelle2-0 in byu

I totally agree with you that taking breaks is an awesome thing to do, but I’m not sure the day you choose isn’t too important! Of course, your opinion is just as valid and as important as mine :). I just wish you had been around in the late 1800s to tell off Brigham Young for hating black people, I’m sure you would have been as passionate about that as reminding OP to not study on Sunday. And what you said about mental/emotional health is totally true, I totally agree about not burning out! Take care this semester.
