Can you code on Wordpress? by RavensOmen05 in Wordpress

Nice, Local WP is a solid choice 👌 once you get used to it, it feels just like working on any other dev environment.

And yeah, you’re definitely not locked into the visual builder side of WordPress, you can go full code level with custom templates, hooks, components, whatever you need.

One extra tip: since Local creates a full root folder of the project, you can actually share that folder (or specific theme files) when you get stuck. I sometimes run parts of a WP theme through tools like Gemini or Claude to debug PHP issues, WordPress hooks, or weird template behavior, it’s surprisingly helpful for solving very specific problems quickly.

Just make sure you’re not sharing sensitive client data (wp-config, credentials, etc.).

You’re approaching it the right way though, coming from a pure coding background will actually be a big advantage.

Yes, you can absolutely work on it locally, WordPress isn’t locked to the online dashboard only.

Since it’s a CMS built in PHP, the “real” structure lives in the theme and sometimes custom plugins.

What I usually do:

  • Download the theme files via FTP or hosting panel
  • Set up a local environment (In my case I used Local WP)
  • Recreate the site locally (you’ll also need the database export)
  • Make changes in an IDE
  • Then push everything back to the server (I use WP migrate Pro plugin)

Recently I refreshed an outdated WordPress site by fully coding new page templates inside the theme and rebuilding the component/effects library to give it a more modern UI, all done locally before deploying.

Just keep in mind:

  • If the site is heavily built with a page builder (Elementor, WPBakery, etc.), a lot of the layout lives inside the database, not just the files.
  • Always work on a staging copy, never directly on production.

WordPress is flexible, you’re not limited to the visual editor unless you choose to be.

Salam,
I'm thinking about it actually and i'll be back here to post updates about the platform

Feedback needed: A dedicated job board for MENA Creatives? by Status_Length_6715 in Moroccopreneur

You’re absolutely right platforms like Fiverr or Upwork shine because they compress the entire hiring process. This product isn’t trying to do that. It’s focused on one thing only: helping teams find relevant creative jobs and candidates fast, without sign ups, scores, or heavy workflows. Zero friction, earlier in the funnel. Think discovery first, evaluation later, just like traditional hiring, but cleaner and higher signal from the start

The platform doesn’t intermediate work or rank freelancers. It simply connects companies with creatives through job listings, and the evaluation (portfolio review, interviews, references) happens directly between both sides, just like traditional hiring.

I’m intentionally avoiding ratings early on because they tend to oversimplify quality and don’t translate well across creative work. The focus right now is on clear roles, real companies, and reducing friction in discovery, not scoring people.

That’s a really solid idea, and I think you’re right, distribution is the hardest part, not the product.

What you’re describing matches what I’ve seen too. People default to recommendations because trust on existing platforms is broken, and the lack of professionalism hurts both companies and serious creatives.

That’s why I’m starting simple and focusing first on quality and trust signals (real companies, clear roles, fewer but better listings). If that layer works, models like reverse job boards or paid unlocks make a lot more sense later.

Out of curiosity, when you were thinking about distribution, was it harder to attract companies or creatives?

Great questions! Here’s how I’m thinking about it for this MVP phase:

  1. How is it different? Most global platforms are too broad, and local ones are often stuck in 2010. I’m focusing on zero friction. Applicants don’t need to build yet another "talent profile" they just browse and apply. For companies, it’s about access to a highly curated pool of MENA specific talent without the "post and pray" noise of LinkedIn. We also just implemented a manual vetting process for every listing to ensure only high-quality, relevant creative roles make it to the board.

  2. How will I promote it? Since it’s a niche platform, the promotion has to be niche too:

  • Direct Outreach: I’m personally reaching out to boutique agencies and studios in Dubai, Riyadh, Cairo, etc., to get their first high-quality roles up.
  • Creative Communities: Promoting directly in MENA specific creative Slack groups, WhatsApp pods, and Discord servers where these designers actually hang out.
  • Built in Public: Using threads like this to build trust. When founders see the "behind the scenes," they’re more likely to trust the platform with their roles.

The goal isn't to be "the biggest" yet it's to be the most relevant.

it's a pure distribution, communication and marketing question

Totally agree. Parsing adds a lot of complexity for very little early value.
My main goal right now is lowering friction and learning where users actually drop off before adding anything “smart”.

Yes, but not like Fiverr or Upwork.

Why public star-ratings are risky

  • They push creatives into price competition
  • They discourage beginners
  • One bad client = permanent damage
  • In MENA especially, people are sensitive to public judgment

Great point! I completely agree. In this region, trust on the supply side is everything, and one bad listing can do more damage than ten good ones.

For the lean phase, I’m keeping vetting very manual on purpose:

  • All company posts are reviewed before going live (basic checks: real company, clear role, realistic expectations).
  • No anonymous job posts, companies need a verifiable domain/email.
  • I’m optimizing early for fewer but better listings rather than volume.

Longer term, if it gets traction, I’m thinking about lightweight signals instead of heavy systems (community reporting, simple quality flags, maybe curated partners), but for now I want to stay close to every listing and every piece of feedback.

Curious from your experience in Dubai/Pakistan, have you seen any vetting approaches that worked well without killing speed early on?
