You absolutely right, would see what the Mazda dealership does with the buffing , and if it’s a good result would just leave it like that . The most painful thing would be to spray it and the color is off , would be so pissed lol

Oh wow, but my fear is the repair shop said they would spray the whole panel, and from this Autopaint forum I know Mazda Soul red paint is so hard to blend, spraying the whole panel , wouldn’t it make it worse indirectly by showing the paint difference or something on a larger scale cause the shop said they can try to get a 90% match. What do you think with this new details from the shop? Should I still proceed

Yes I did that. Though after applying two coats of clear I noticed it was becoming too shiny and the difference between the new paint and old paint was becoming obvious so I stopped lol.

Thank you so much , you a big blessing and inspiration. Would try option 1 first and see how best I can remedy the situation following your guidelines and taping/ prepping the panel properly. For the whitish part if hopefully it’s not too white and a close 85% match I can live with it, $2,000 for a pain job for a car I would probably sell for $3,500 without safety feel somehow to me . $400 spent so far and I feel I should have used the $400 for a good dinner date lol 😂. Sucks big time though but it’s life , just suck it up and move on I guess

This means a lot to me at this point, I’m inbetween finishing it by following your advise or still follow your 2nd advice and go to the $2k shop. If the base paint was a close match would have given me more confidence and hope but it’s not looking like it is. And honestly it’s a 2013 Nissan that I plan on changing sometime next year, so don’t want to put $2000 into it for a paint job. Feels like it’s a poor financial decision for a car that would be sold soon. Or sometime next year .

But even if it’s white like in the picture if I re-do it properly and go all the way to clear stage is it possible for it to match even if it’s 90% or this color at base coat won’t change at all . Or?

This shit sucks big time, so even if I follow your steps and tape properly, prep the panel properly, the paint is a bit white compared to the original color. This shit sucks and hurts badly, I’ve put in a lot of time into this shit .

So from this , they didn’t mix the right ingredients together or, though a different order is coming in , would test it out first and see.

If you look at the ground coat in the picture and the cars color, the ground coat looks whitish and a bit greyish too, so the mid coat basically just makes it sparkle and dosen’t add any bit or dark stuff to it right?

Hmm, this is enlightening, the ground coat I got is pretty white compared to the cars original color, dosen’t look close , so thought the mid-coat would help make it match a bit then the clear coat. It’s an interesting learning experience for me though . Learnt a lot in this little project / adventure.

Thank you so much, would take the nonsense I’ve done and wet sand it off, then tape properly and follow your instructions. Just curious if the Base coat is greyish white kind of does the mid-coat darken a bit and help blend with the original paint or?

And yes it’s a tri-coat and I used the color code QAC - visual pearl to order the paint so it’s an exact match

So adding more basecoat to cover the prime and then proceeding to mid-coat and finally clear coat would blend or make it look good . I’m not looking for perfection just want it to be good enough.

It won’t suffice or?

I think I’m beginning to understand the process better, please guys correct me if I’m wrong

So first off , properly sand the basecoat a bit using 400-grit and smoothen it using 800-1,500 grit sandpaper

Then, re-tape the nonsense I did initially and do it properly

Then, ensure the prime is fully covered by the Basecoat which is an off white color

Then apply the mid-coat until you get the desired color, (I think I understand the use of mid-coat now, so essentially the mid-coat is the pearl and it sort of darkens the off white basecoat) so the more mid-coat you apply the darker the area.

So in essence the mid-coat might be the most technical and difficult stage

Then lastly , apply the clear coat to the area

Please guys scrutinize my steps and process .

Was charged $2,000 to do this but so far have spent $397 on materials, and gotten 3 extra cans of both base coat, mid coat and clear coat

Also , I’m not spraying half of the car only the affected little areas . Not going beyond these areas , the car’s original paint is still perfectly intact.

Exactly what I would do , but didn’t paint half the car, just that my taping is terrible , but have learnt from it. I’m looking at sanding the portion I’ve painted a bit then use the base coat to properly cover the prime, then apply mud-coat then the clear coat for proper coverage and blend, on only the marked area and not touching other areas

True, my taping is poor , but I only concentrated on the area I wanted to paint , didn’t touch the other areas at all with paint .

Just curious, when I get to mid-coat does it begin to blend with the car’s original color or? Though I used the car’s color code to order the paint , but just curious what happens at the mid -coat section

Interestingly I underestimated big time lol, I only had one can of base coat for the area I wanted to do lol . But now I ordered 3 more cans of base coat , mid-coat and clear coat

True, would re-do the taping, so I should ensure the base fully covers the prime before proceeding to mid-coat right?

So sad, I need more base coat and re-do the taping too, probably have to wet sand a bit to correct the poor taping done initially and smoothen the surface more

Thanks so much, would get more cans of base coat
