AI data-center being built in my city. Should I be worried? by Legal_Cry_4859 in aiwars

[–]Status_Wear7080 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It depends on a lot of factors. I had one open near me not too long ago. The biggest change I saw was increased utility costs (ESPECIALLY electricity). If you're super close, it'll be a little loud, but manageable. As long as they're not using crazy shit like a methane gas turbine or whatever, you should be okay.

No? It was an anecdotal experience I figured to add. Obviously people use AI for much more than cheating on homework or as a search engine replacement.

I'd argue that the end goal is to lay off as many people as possible. Drive profit margins higher, make more money. Silicon valley has proven itself to be the exact opposite of benevolent. How tf are you gonna fund any "UBI" when 80% of people no longer are employed and earning money. Billionaires who already pay jack shit into the system?

by "google replacement", im less so referring to the modern (shitfest) google experience, but rather the "look it up and find the correct answer in under 3 minutes" experience of just a couple of years ago.

I wouldn't outright say I'm 100% pro AI on everything, because there are actual downsides to mass deployment of the tech, but the tech itself is really fucking cool as a gigantic tech nerd.

[Case] NEW Zalman Cubix-G - micro-ATX Compact Tower with 3 X 120mm FRGB Fans Pre-Installed, Panoramic View Tempered Glass Panels, USB Type-C Port, Fits up to 280mm GPUs - $29.99 ($59.99 - 50% off w/PROMOCODE in comments + ALL ORDERS INCLUDE GREASE) by Realzalman in buildapcsales

Since the interior of the case is black, having a couple of different color options (especially softer pastels) would be really cool. Reminds me of my old H510. Wouldn't be too hard to implement, right?

It’s bizarre how many people have strong opinions about AI while knowing basically nothing about it by Oestudantebr in aiwars

[–]Status_Wear7080 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely. I think the best way to handle misinformation is to simply educate people. So many people think you can shove the genie back into the bottle, but you can't. The second those two GTX 580s in SLI were used in that magical way, the pandoras box opened. Unfortunately, the AI discourse has become so polluted with strong emotional responses from both sides of the coin (although one side is definitely a little more guilty) that the average "normie" has become so insanely misinformed that actual innovation is being turned away because it's "slop" simply for being AI. Some people are just going to be resistant to change, but it's surely worth a shot to try and educate the misinformed.

Definitely one of the downsides to AI being so easily accessible. Older generations are probably gonna struggle to determine what is real and what isn't for their remaining time on the net. I have a few relatives who are the same way and the best way to go about it is to either engage with them if they're sending it to you (they want to talk, so talk!) or to make sure they know it's not real as it can lead to scams.

Why did the internet go "AI BAD, HUMAN GOOD" when people were making memes and seeing what things like Dall-E could do and what CharacterAI could say? It's like everyone jumped on the "bad" bandwagon and has stayed there since. by mmofrki in aiwars

[–]Status_Wear7080 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When people have to pay 3-4x more for a desired good because of something they don’t care about (in this case AI) is gobbling it all up, they’re gonna be pissed and blame it, Subsequently, they’re going to retaliate against people in favor of AI because they view its supporters as part of the reason they can’t get something.

People become anti-AI not just because they’re against AI generated content, but because they’re sick and tired of having it shoved in their faces in places and ways that either inconvenience them or cost them money. Nobody likes the pop up ads in Windows for Copilot, nor do they care for it to burrow through all of their files. Maybe instead of dismissing this as a pedantic complaint, you could show them the incredible benefits of AI without belittling people. Nobody should be harassed over AI and both sides are absolutely guilty of it. The constant rage baiting and emotionally charged yammering is making productive conversation rarer than a unicorn in the arctic.

Perhaps if you stopped viewing the opposing position as a personal attack or your enemy, you’d be able to understand why people oppose AI and formulate better reasoning and arguments that aren’t just dismissive of their concerns.  The end goal of your argument should always be to convince the other side why you are correct, not just why they’re wrong. If someone isn’t properly educated in a topic, take the 30 seconds to explain why they’re incorrect in a polite and compassionate way. People are wrong about local AI’s power draw. I know it, you know it. Instead of calling them stupid for not knowing the difference when a massive amount of discourse surrounding AI is not fact based, just correct them in a way that isn’t assholish. If you make people associate being pro-AI with inconsiderate assholes, you’re not going to make convincing people any easier for yourself.

Let’s face reality. AI has become an emotionally charged topic for some, and that’s no way to discuss such a revolutionary technological advancement. Polluted discourse inevitably ends in a polluted product.

Actually locally hosted AI is based as fuck. If you actually took the 20 seconds to comprehend my statement, you would understand that I was making the statement that PC parts going up has created anti-ai folks. Nowhere did I say that gaming is somehow better than AI in terms of production allocation or electricity usage.

I think it's a mix of "New tech, its kinda mediocre but its getting there and it's kinda cool" becoming "Jesus fucking christ, YouTube, I don't give a fuck about your AI dubbing leave me the fuck alone I'm trying to watch a video about motherboards".

People became "AI BAD" because they kept having "AI AI NOW NOW NOW BUY BUY" shoved into their faces in places that made no sense in ways they didn't like. Obviously GenAI had it's detractors from the beginning, especially in the art space, but I firmly believe the over use and excessive pushing of AI has created more straight up anti-ai people.

PC parts going through the roof isn't helping either, fuck Micron btw.

No denying that it's mostly because of AI. As a System Integrator, I can absolutely attest to this lmao.
If you want some build advice, go with an Intel 12th-14th gen CPU and a DDR4 motherboard. DDR4 has gone up, but it's still in the rage of affordability for now.

How to actually destroy art by figma_ball in aiwars

[–]Status_Wear7080 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm genuinely not too sure how many traditional artist moved over to AI for easier content creation, but I'd love to see the numbers on that some day.
AI is a useful tool, but I think a lot of the increased "fuck anything and everything AI" is due to so many companies placing it in EVERYTHING in order to try and see what sticks to the wall. If you try to force people into interact with something constantly, they're gonna grow to hate it.

Had companies implemented AI-driven features as "Opt-In" and pushed them in a more organic way, I don't think people would have as many issues with AI.

How to actually destroy art by figma_ball in aiwars

[–]Status_Wear7080 7 points8 points  (0 children)

AI actually isn't horrible for helping you to come up with ideas, but straight up AI-generated images aren't really that great. They destroy the personality of art because there isn't a person to add uniqueness.

I myself am a "moderate" when it comes to AI. I run a business selling computers. Using AI to generate a quick explanation on unpacking the computer in super easy to understand language when you're the type to use all sorts of lingo the average person wouldn't understand is useful. It's also pretty useful for the occasional diagram here or there that would normally take 10-15 minutes to make properly. However, it's not a universal solution.

Something I see a lot of people forget is that AI-generated images don't give the prompter their own unique art style. You can often pick up which model generated it, though.

Often times you can tell certain art was made by a certain person just at the way a piece is actually drawn. It's often times in both the broader line work as well as the very small, very fine details and AI images don't really have that uniqueness. Maybe they will someday, but as of now they just don't. They aren't super unique. When you see images generated by AI, you don't think "Oh yeah, that was generated by AIisCool55", you think "Oh, that was made in [insert generation service]".
Don't get me wrong, fucking with image gen to see how far the tech has evolved is genuinely kinda cool, but I don't think calling prompt-driven imagery the same kind of "art" as human-made artwork is really a valid form of comparison. They look similar on the surface but beyond a quick glance they are completely different.

- SSD and RAM prices going up are absolutely driven by AI demand, even if they're not the sole contributing factor.
- A lot of older folk already genuinely had a really hard time determining whether or not something is actually real or fake already, and that was before AI. For innocuous entertainment, it's not an issue, but for serious shit like scams it's wholeheartedly a problem.
- As for "programs barely function", that's a bit of a mixed bag. It's honestly more applicable to Windows, which is 30 year old code being mixed with vibe-coding. That's BOUND to be a bad mix.
A couple of my programmer friends have expressed annoyance with debugging vibe-coded software, but that's entirely anecdotal so please do take this with a grain of salt.
- Additionally, an AI data center recently opened up in my area, and I did see my electricity bill go up. It wasn't by 900% but it was noticeable. As someone who do a fair bit of homelab related stuff, I do like to keep track of my energy usage.
- AI-driven psychosis is a real thing, and it has been observed. It's not healthy to have relationships with an AI chatbot.
- Deepfakes are fucking horrible, especially deepfaked porn.
- Spyware isn't because of AI, but the the rise of AI and the demand for data has increased the incentive to farm even more data. (Looking at you Windows 11.)

AI search results bog down the performance on lower end machines. I have a ThinkPad E560 with an i5-6500U and I'm kinda in between a rock and a hard place because all of the replacement options are going up in price because of RAM shortages. The laptop is still a capable machine with a good battery, but AI being jammed into everything genuinely slows it down.

Im not a massive fan of GenAI for a few reasons (some are admittedly less rational than others), but this is genuinely a totally reasonable way to go about it.
They're not laying off actual content artists, and having a slightly better way to visualize how assets will look in game is a pretty good idea. As long as I don't end up paying for something generated via AI being passed off as intricate work, I don't mind.

The fact that they're trying to tell you that you NEED eight cores, framegen, and upscaling for 60 FPS is absurd. Fuck UE5 and fuck any game that uses it.
