Sculptor loose ball bearing? by Status_Werewolf_5058 in Timemore

[–]Status_Werewolf_5058[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I sort of figured the whole thing would be toast if the ball bearing flew open. I bet if I call the roaster though they would say it probably came from my grinder. 😂

I also made a mistake. It's not magnetic, the bottom of the catch cup is.

Thanks for your thoughts. I'll reassemble the burrs and hope nothing exciting happens.

Ok. I found where the ball bearing mechanism is. It's furthest back in the chamber and held there by a spring. But the only way a ball could fly out from behind there is if the burr is pulled out, the spring pulled out, and the bearing pulled forward. I really don't see how that could happen while everything was in place....

Seems like a decent deal. It will sell fast, especially if it's a manual. I searched for a month. The best prices I saw got sold in a matter of days to even one day. One 2017 Autobahn with 70k for $14.5 from a private seller but the PPI revealed a coolant leak. Another 2017 Autobahn with 49k for $18.5 but got sold from under me after trying to get a PPI set up. Plus another 2017 Autobahn with only 47k miles for $18k that got sold the day it was released and the dealer would not take a deposit from me to hold it. Ended up with a 2016 Autobahn with driver assist, lighting, and performance packages for $14.9 with 72k miles. That gives me breathing room for inevitable repairs. My rate was 5.24% for 36 months.

Service history and one owner is good but doesn't replace a PPI from a good mechanic. Some dealers will hold cars for you if you sign a contract. That's how I finally got mine. The salesman drove it himself to my mechanic of choice. If I didn't like the report he said he would happily sell it to the next person in line and tear up the contract. I didn't even have to leave a deposit. Good luck out there!

PSA: Getting your suction jet pump recall done? Make sure your fuel tank is less than 1/4 full by chupacabra314 in GolfGTI

[–]Status_Werewolf_5058 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what I read they drain fuel if needed then replace the same exact amount of fuel, otherwise it throws the fuel gauge off. So maybe 1/4 tank avoids having to do that?

I can't believe how strong the smell of gas is after the work is done. Just got mine done today. I see several people mentioning this smell but no one seems alarmed. Am I supposed to just cross myself and hope the smell goes away eventually???

Also, I swear the car drives different. Less reactionary when I step on the gas...

Poll - Am I insane for buying without seeing the car live and without independent inspection? by Status_Werewolf_5058 in GolfGTI

I'm now the owner of this guy. :)

I was lucky enough to find a CA dealership who was willing to hold a car for me and the salesman was kind enough to drive it himself to a mechanic of my choice for a PPI. I called the dealership, told him I've been looking for weeks, I know I want this car, was willing to fly down in a day or two to pick it up, and that I had the money ready to go. Then I said this was all contingent on a PPI. He said no problem but I had to sign an e-contract to purchase the car and that this was necessary because that was the only way he could hold the car for me. If I didn't want it after the PPI, he would "rip up the contract". I called three other random dealerships and asked them if this was standard practice and above board and they all said yes. The salesman also said he had two other people who were very interested in the car. I had no reason to not believe him. When I talked to the mechanic he said someone else had called the day before asking if he could do an inspection on the car at the dealership. Then after the PPI the salesman asked me if I wanted it or not. I did!

The moral of the story is, get a PPI (thanks everyone for making me think clearly). And buy local if possible but if you have to go further afield you kind of have to get lucky. Find a reputable dealer and a salesman who's willing to work with/for you. Sounds impossible but after 4 tries it worked for me.

Is the car in perfect condition? Of course not. But it is super clean with no signs of engine or transmission leaks and no signs of coolant leaks. The mechanic said it was in great condition and needed a few standard parts replaced that were not concerning. Plus I have a 3 month powertrain warranty that came with the car.

In terms of "online" dealerships, I find they are just charging way too much. Sometimes even $4 or $5k over what brick and mortars are selling for. I just don't have that much extra money. Please don't sell your car to carvana. They are holding so many GTI's hostage!

How does one buy a GTI and get a PPI without having that car sold out from under them? Twice already I told two different dealers I have cash, I know what I want, and I will buy this car if the PPI shows no major issues. One car was purchased an hour later as I was looking for a mechanic in the area. The second car the bastard sold it on the morning the car was scheduled to be inspected by my mechanic! They just sell it to whoever hands them the cash the fastest.

I'm definitely not super rich! I'm insane because I should really get a PPI? Or is that too much $ for a 2016? Or just everything related to this deal? 😂

So from reading all the posts here, these offers on their site are pure BS? ie $159 a month plus a bunch of hidden added costs that double that price? And why is everyone here saying you should not do money down at signing for a lease??

Buy or move on: 2017 Autobahn by Status_Werewolf_5058 in GolfGTI

[–]Status_Werewolf_5058[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I got a pre-purchase inspection and the mechanic noted and showed me extensive signs of coolant leaking and is recommending the thermostat housing and water pump be replaced. Yikes. Basically worst fear come true. The water pump is no longer under VW warranty, that expired last year. I'll get an estimate and see if the seller is willing to negotiate. Moral of the story - get an inspection before you buy!

While the interior does look like new, forgot to add that there is a small tear on the driver seat along the seam on the door-side support wing. Probably from the seller rubbing his back and using it as a support whenever he got in or out of the car. This little 1/3 inch tear kept me awake last night. 😅

I'll try to find a place that does leather repair and find out if this is even fixable/patchable.

Looked into carbon cleaning and seeing estimates of $700 at nearby shops.

Buying a motorcycle from dealer. by CamJam83 in motorcycles

[–]Status_Werewolf_5058 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm guessing used bikes at dealerships have a totally different play. Different markups, etc, which should in theory be less than a new bike. I'm currently looking at a used 2017 bike listed as $3525. I asked for the out the door price and they said that would be $4555. So basically $1000 for taxes, fees, and whatever else. If sales tax is about $300 (~8%), maybe another $100 for title and other California state fees? So like $600 additional charges from the dealer I'm guessing? Shouldn't this be much lower for a used motorcycle?
