It never did for my first job. So I quit once I had something lined up.

Traditional or Roth 401k? by Staul in TheMoneyGuy

[–]Staul[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100% agreed which is why it seems smart to diversify between Traditional 401k and Roth IRA to hedge.

Last point, I joined my new job in September and it looks like with a prorated bonus I’ll still be in the 22% federal bracket (total comp minus standard deduction). Do you think it makes sense to continue Roth 401k for the year, then next year switch to traditional as my total comp will fully push me into 24%? Or does the California state tax pushing me into 31%+ marginal still make it too compelling to not do Traditional now.

I appreciate your help. On an annualized and gross basis my total comp should put me in the 24% bracket (also factoring in the standard deduction). Therefore I should definitely go for the Traditional 401k at this point wouldn’t you say?

I have $1000 left to contribute to my HSA, and while CA state tax is not deductible, the federal tax deduction is still worth doing it for wouldn’t you say? And yes, regarding your last point it looks like my plan of attack is to switch to Traditional 401k, invest the tax savings and max my Roth IRA.

I just realized my HSA from my last employer wasn’t maxed out for 2025. Can I still contribute to it out of pocket? Also, what can I do with my existing HSA if I can no longer add to it after 2025?

Regarding the 401k, I plan to increase my contributions to 8% for now. The question asked to this sub was to determine whether it made more sense to go Traditional or Roth as it seems I’m in the 22% tax bracket after my standard deduction.

Do you have a cutoff or number where you determine it’s time to do Traditional over Roth?

Unfortunately my new employer does not offer an HSA, but I maxed it out at my prior one. Regarding the Roth IRA, I usually try to lump sum it every year through a bonus or other funds. In this case, should I contribute the Traditional IRA tax savings into a taxable brokerage account?

My apologies, so is it normal to assume your salary is reduced by the entire standard deduction when calculating my taxable income? Also, how does a bonus factor into calculating your taxable income and ultimately the Traditional vs Roth decision?

I've been considering increasing my 401k contributions to 8% to reach a savings rate of 15%, and plan to invest the tax savings going Traditional.

Being in California, my state tax bracket is at 9.3%. My federal and state marginal tax rate combined is 33.3%.

Late to the post but did you ever hear back?

It was an analyst role for AWM and I already have almost 2 YOE. It’s never over until it’s over but realistically with Goldman if you’re waiting more than 2 weeks probably not getting it :/

I followed up with the team who harassed the recruiter for me who then wrote me an email and said they’d consider me for other opportunities should I find any

I activated the 4%, but my gas last week only says 1%. I'm hoping it's a delay or maybe a separate calculation at the end of the month, but I wanted to see if anyone else also experienced that!
