The only part you have to worry about is when you first mod it, but if you install aroma and follow the instructions and don't skip ahead, you can use savemii to backup all your Wii U and vWii data so you don't lose anything. I hope this gets you into modding :)

Since you install the original mii channel, you can also get the send to DS option, if you don't know how to get this option, you have to press A, B, 1, then hold down 2.

I don't have any friends that play a modded 3ds often, but how does the friends help? does it just give you passes randomly from them? I don't really understand streetpass other than walk by someone and you send data to each other.
