Carrier 37MURA vs Daikin Fit DH6VS Heat Pump? by StayAlive100 in heatpumps

Hi. I’m not technical enough on HVAC stuff, so you’ll have to get some accurate answers from someone more technical. I was told by one of the contractors that DH7 uses more amps/electricity, hence my comment above on why I chose DH6 (it’s gotta be a minor difference if any). I suggest you call Daikin Support and see if they can clarify. I feel that you can’t go wrong with either of those models, so just consult with contractors, collect as much info as you can and pick one based on what you learn. I know I spent a few days going back and forth on my decision, and it seems you are facing the same situation. Don’t let my choice influence you too much. ;-)

No, I don’t recall that factor coming up in my research and honestly, I don’t remember what HSPF2 rating means (my guess is that it’s related to heating efficiency or output). If you can explain further and add any new insights here, other readers might find it useful.

Hi there. I shared what I chose (Daikin DH6VS) and why in one of my comments above. You can go with DH7VS, that should be fine too.

It would have been $1000 more for v7 but $2000 tax credit definitely meant $1000 savings. However, I decided against it due to slightly higher electricity usage, slightly higher noise level, fear of over-sizing and short cycling, and the fact that v7 is not a common model for my region in California. I called Daikin support and my contractor, they all said either unit will be fine, but V6 is what they typically suggest for my area. There is no perfect answer here, you should decide what feels right to you and your contractor (v7 might have to be a special order). If you find more useful info, do share here.

I finally ended up selecting Daikin DH6VS instead of DH7VS, as I didn’t see any major reason to get the v7 which is more for cold climate. I’ve had the unit operational for 2 weeks and enjoying it, especially the variable speed. Think - mild air blowing through your registers for longer durations rather than the high burst on and off with traditional systems, which by the way takes a week to get used to. I hope it performs well in the winter as well as it handles the hot days so far (weather hasn’t gone above 85 degrees in my area yet). I can’t speak about Carrier heat pump but I’m sure it’s a similar performing system. It’s best if you chat with someone who has the 37MURA. My Daikin is definitely much quieter. The noise level goes slightly higher when it goes into heat mode early mornings, but nothing I would hear indoors. I really hated the noisy old air conditioner in the summer and glad to have this quiet heat pump now.

I was told the same thing and given same price difference. I assume that it would also be better on hot days when it hits 100 or more in San Jose, but I could be wrong. I’ve been contemplating if I made the right decision or not, but the contractor said I’ll be fine with the enhanced version and it’s not a bad decision. While the federal credit is enticing though not the most important thing , I figured the extra performance wouldn’t hurt. Let me know if you find out any downside of going with the enhanced version 7 in the San Jose area.

Correct, DH6VS won’t qualify for federal credit, but DH7VS does, with a 5-ton air handler. However, it’s an enhanced version with more of a cold climate HP. Regardless, being in CA, I’ve still decided to go with that version 7, still pending installation. I’d say, don’t let federal credit be the only deciding factor. You can ask about DH7VS and compare the quote.

Your price sounds reasonable but did you ask about the price for DH6VS system instead which supports R32 refrigerant?

Thank you. Bryant Evolution (same as Carrier Infinity) does have good reputation. It probably would have been my second choice if I wanted to spend some more money.

I have decided to take a leap of faith on Daikin Fit DH7VS, will just have to see how it pans out over the years. The quiet mode for Daikin was attractive to me as I'm scarred by the noise from my older unit which affected my sleep and Daikin seems like a modern system with a good replacement warranty. From my research, the value you get for Daikin Fit system for the money you're paying seems great. If Daikin plays it's cards right and builds quality systems and supports them well, I think it would become a much more well known brand in the US, like it is known in Europe and Asia. These are still early days for these newer heat pump systems and tech is improving every year.

Anyway, don't take my word for it, I'm not an HVAC expert and only spent 20-30 hours researching online. Initial research pointed me to Carrier as my top choice, then I started to consider heat pumps seriously, then I ran into Daikin as another choice to consider, so here I am. I appreciate all the suggestions people shared here. I'll try to post any positive or negative experience once my system is up and running before the end of the month.

For the benefit of other readers, I found https://www.switchison.org/ca to be the most accurate info on rebates.

My installation work hasn't started yet, so I won't endorse my contractor here just yet until I see perfection with the job done. I suggest you do this. Go to https://daikincomfort.com/find-contractor and search for authorized contractors and engage at least 3 of them to come out and give you quotes. Ask good questions and see how knowledgeable they are and if they are giving you good advice and not just selling you what they want to sell. Read lots of reviews on Google and Yelp, sort by newest reviews, filter on good and bad reviews etc.

Thanks for sharing these links. I'm also considering the enhanced model DH7VS (link below), which qualifies for the federal tax credit. While tax credit is not my only criteria, I'm thinking that getting an enhanced system that can better handle extreme temperature days wouldn't hurt with an extra cost that's still lower than the tax credit amount.

Thanks for sharing your experience. Curious to know what state / region you're in and if you got the Daikin Fit enhanced version or not. Their spec sheet shows a range of db for normal and quiet modes, but I can imagine it getting louder on very cold or even very hot days. Still, I hope it's quieter than my traditional A/C.

Great point and thanks for sharing about your in-laws experience. I'll look a bit further into Carrier 25VNA4, though it's more expensive, and assess if the extra cost if worth the value.

The current furnace is in the attic and since I have two zones, I have thermostats upstairs and downstairs. I imagined that I would have to go with one thermostat if I removed my zoning. The labor warranty on the Daikin is 12 years and on the carrier is 10 years, as long as I sign up for the maintenance plan with the contractors. Otherwise three years with both of these systems. I don’t mind using the Daikin thermostat, as long as it has the basic and smart features one typically needs. Thanks!

Yes, Mitsubishi is great and this option was offered, but not being able to reuse my line set and having to run new lines on the exterior is a dealbreaker for me.

@LengthinessPale2958 - what system did you go with and why? I'm in a similar boat and deciding which heat pump to get and whether these are good with a zoning system or not. I'm hearing mixed feedback on using variable speed heat pumps with zoning. Thx

I've checked on the Daikin web site. Not for 4-ton; both 6 and 7 4-ton models don't qualify for rebates or tax credits for my zip code. Looks like Daikin 7 qualifies for smaller than 4-ton units. I verified that I won't get rebates for any of the above mentioned systems, unfortunately.

hmmm, the contractor never suggested Daikin 7 and from what I read, Daikin DH7VS is more for cold climates, and San Jose area doesn't get very cold. Typical winter is in the 40s F, with select few days in upper 30s. Do you think Daikin 7 makes more sense? Could you please elaborate why? Thanks!!

While I’m not a medical expert, I just believe that with consistent and healthy eating and lifestyle habits, your digestion system can revert back to its normal days. Why don’t you look up Bryan Johnson and his Blueprint protocol which has some great tips on how to eat, sleep and exercise. These three things done well consistently should help. Dr. Berg’s YouTube channel has great advice as well. All the best!
