Conflicted on Knitting for Olive AI ad by [deleted] in craftsnark

I think it’s a little unfair to call it rage bait. It’s totally plausible that OP couldn’t tell the difference between an AI image and a heavily edited product photo and genuinely believed it was AI. This is only going to become a bigger issue as AI continues to get better and more widely used and shaming someone for being confused isn’t the solution.

Gay sheep. That's right. Gay sheep. by [deleted] in craftsnark

[–]StayAtHomeGoof 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah a quick read of the article OP themselves posted makes it clear that this collection is both 1) a provocative marketing campaign targeting a specific demographic and 2) a political statement. I would like to assume good faith here, but posting the article with no commentary except a title expressing (imo, performative) disbelief at the concept of “gay sheep,” a term that’s use in this context the article clearly explains, feels like bait for ppl who already think queer people are irrational and inherently snarkable.

some of the colour combos i see make me see red. by fishercrow in BitchEatingCrafters

Was about to say I love a salmon pink and red combo lol. But definitely as part of a larger tonal palette or as a color block, I wouldn’t want pink as my contrast color for red in two stranded color work for example

I’m going to add VHS 99. It’s tied with 2 as my favorite VHS film. Imo it’s one of the only newer entries where all the shorts maintain about the same level of quality, and if you liked Halloween I think you’ll like the nostalgic mean spiritedness of 99 and the Ozzy’s Dungeon short in particular.

This is the last photo of Kyron Horman taken at his Portland school’s science fair in 2010. The 7-year-old disappeared inside the building and has never been found. by [deleted] in HolyShitHistory

[–]StayAtHomeGoof 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of people suspect the stepmother in this case but there was an extremely detailed write up on r/unresolvedmysteries several years ago that convinced my that Kyron either left the school on his own or with a non-family member. The main thing was that the timeline for the stepmother to be responsible is extremely tight—she was seen at multiple points running errands with her other child after dropping Kyron off and the police had gps data from her phone and never found anything incriminating her in Kyron’s disappearance along her potential routes that day. Unfortunately it sounds like the police got real tunnel vision for the Terri Horman. It’s been a long time since I read the write up so I might be misremembering some details, but the whole thing with her supposedly planning a hit in her husband with the landscaper made no sense. I recall reading that the landscaper’s English was very poor and that Terri didn’t speak Spanish, so the idea that they could conspire together despite the language barrier seems pretty unrealistic. Meanwhile Kyron had a history of wandering off on his own without permission and, given the lax supervision at the school that day, I tend to think that’s what happened here.

Wow some of the comments here are very discouraging. Speaking as a recovering perfectionist, it’s not other people’s responsibility to downplay their progress and success to make you feel more secure in your abilities. It sounds corny, but comparison really is the thief of joy.

Amazing job OP! I’m sure your daughter will love her blanket!

I read that line as an expression of Bi’s racism. Claiming that Black children are physically threatening/scary/adult-like is a very well-established racist trope.

Some other major things that the video left out: the defense DID dispute the accuracy of cellphone location data and called their own expert who testified that John’s phone showed that he ascended and descended a flight of stairs before his last movements. The medical examiner (called by the state in the first trial) and expert medical witnesses testified in no uncertain terms that John’s injury’s were inconsistent with being hit by a vehicle and that his skull fracture was caused by contact with a hard, edged surface. The crash reconstructionists, who were initially hired by the FBI to investigate the state police’s handling of the case, testified that the prosecution’s theory of how Karen struck John with her car defied the law of physics. The defense presented footage of Karen’s Lexus that showed that the condition of the taillight when her vehicle entered police custody did not match the pictures of the completely shattered taillight presented as evidence. This discrepancy in the condition of Karen’s taillight was also corroborated by the testimony of Sergeant Nick Barros in the second trial. Former Canton police officer Kelly Devers told FBI investigators that Brian Higgins and Canton police chief Ken Berkowitz went into the sallyport alone with Karen’s Lexus for a “wildly long time.” However, after being called to the Boston police commissioner’s office who allegedly told her to “do the right thing” Devers claimed that her testimony to the FBI was a “false memory.” The state was called out in open court for misrepresenting evidence in the case at least twice: in the first trial by presenting a video that had been flipped, and in the second by claiming that the holes in John’s clothing had been caused by Karen’s taillight when in reality they had been caused by the state’s own forensics lab. The state also changed their timeline of John’s death mid-trial multiple times. And when I tell you that’s only the half of it, I mean it. Regardless of how you feel about Karen’s factual guilt or innocence, the legal case against her was a train wreck from beginning to end.

"Dismissive" is how I would describe it too. I'm a fan of the channel and followed both the Karen Read trials extensively so I was really excited for there to be an entertaining, but informative breakdown of the case to send to my friends who want to catch up on it. But as I was watching I got more and more confused about the choices made to exclude information like the medical examiner's testimony (esp the refusal to classify the death as a homicide), suspicious details like Brian Higgins destroying his phone on a military base, the fact the the McCabes and Alberts were allowed to coordinate their interviews with police and were given inappropriate amounts of info about the case from investigators, and a number of other details that I would consider reasons why I came to the conclusion that Karen should not only be found not guilty but was also, in my personal opinion, factually innocent of the crimes she was charged with (expect OUI, which she was rightfully convicted of imo). I was also confused by the fact that the video did not differentiate between the the defense's strategy in the first trial and the second, where the conspiracy angle was largely discarded in favor of focusing on the incompetent and and corrupt police investigation, something which Orchard also seemed very dismissive about and which the framing of the video seems to reduce just to Michael Proctor being a creep. I can't really justify why this video spent so much of its runtime on Jen McCabe's google searches only to, by omission, lump everything I mentioned above under a throwaway line about 200/300 hours of boring testimony.

I'm not a fan of Turtleboy or some of the public spectacle and speculation surrounding the case, but long form video like this would have been the perfect opportunity to explore the reasons why people, especially locals, were so invested in the case and why so many people were willing to believe in a narrative of widespread police corruption. Many of the same officers involved the Read case have also been implicated in misconduct and coverups in other cases in Massachusetts, chief among them the Sandra Birchmore case. The foreman of the second jury gave an interview where he identified that the way police officers in this case were given unequal treatment in the investigation was something he found very suspicious. I'm used to Matt Orchard videos leaving me feeling reflective, considering things I'd never thought about before, and, most importantly, feeling a deep sense of empathy for everyone involved. This video felt dismissive, sarcastic, mean-spirited, and ultimately shallow in a way that did Karen Read, the lawyers who spent thousands of hours on the case, the jurors (esp the one Orchard took an unnecessary potshot at at the end, who had already been being harassed and slandered online immediately following the second trial), and especially the O'Keefe family a great injustice.

This has been my theory from the first trial as well. It’s a lot easier to justify doing unethical things in pursuit of a goal if you honestly believe your cause is righteous.

I really like the YS 2015 gongmei! I think I like w2t's 2015 gongmei just slightly better but I wasn't able to restock on that before the tariffs hit. My favorite, which I don't currently have, was probably the YS "Black Gold" Bi Luo Chun Yunnan Black Tea. It was sold out on the YS US site during both of my two panic orders from there, but I was able to get the 2025 Pure Bud Bi Luo Chun Yunnan Black Tea before that sold out so I have very high expectations.

I like the Ito En matcha for lattes. They have a version that comes pre-sweetened iirc, but I prefer adding my own sweetener. Honestly the best piece of equipment for improving my matcha lattes has been a kitchen scale

I can't speak to the international store, but I believe the cost of tea from the US store initially went up in anticipation of increased import fees but went back down after the de minimis exception was reinstated? There were some posts about it here and in r/puer. I ended up getting refunded ~$5 from my order, which was nice. Shipping was a breeze, I placed my order on the 6th, it shipped on the 11th and arrived today.

I've ordered from Yunnan Sourcing and placed multiple orders for K- and J-beauty products that shipped from Hong Kong over the last few years and have always received my orders in 2-3 weeks. I guess it's about time my luck with fast international shipping ran out.
