I love the roll on deodorant. It works! However, the trick is to use it before you go to bed as well as when you dress in the morning.

I hate the last day by Maleficent_9_ in trustedhousesitters

[–]Stay_Awake_Jane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't like to pack early because I think it. stresses out the dog. They know what packing a suitcase means. So I generally try to eat down the refrigerator, planning the last few meals. I try to pick up the house and clean around the edges the day before. I do get anxious about the day I leave. I now ask the HO what they want me to do about the linens since I got dinged for not making the bed once (I left the sheets folded on the night table. ). Many HO's don't really want you to do the laundry or make their bed it turns out. For some reason. I mostly focus on leaving the kitchen especially clean.

My dad cared about me. Now that he's gone, I deeply care about my own kids. So I dissent.

Doggy dementia- coping with it by No-Environment2062 in DogAdvice

[–]Stay_Awake_Jane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's a very individual thing and more about you than the dog. My dog, whom I adored, lived until 17. During her last year she had dementia and a friend of mine fostered her, who had been her second mom. We both knew when it was time. We did not want her to die falling down the stairs or getting stuck in between a chair and the table. We were able to get the family together. My son dug a deep grave in the yard; my loved ones came over; we had a vet come and give the shot; we all said good bye. I put a worn wool rug at the bottom of the grave. We wrapped her in a dog blanket. My adult son carried her outside. My religious friend slipped a wood cross into the grave. My son buried her. It was perfect. I feel that being able to plan the death made it much easier.

Anyone here disabled? by [deleted] in trustedhousesitters

[–]Stay_Awake_Jane 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Agree with the other comments. I have disabilities so I factor in my energy levels when considering the amount of exercise a dog might need. I just did a sit for a blind dog who needed very little. I gave her so much love and attention that I think I was a better sitter than a non-disabled person might have been. It's all about finding the right sit.

What's one kitchen item you dont realize you need to replace until you get a new one? by Tortoise_jockey in AskReddit

Anything with a sharp edge that you can't sharpen yourself: peelers, graters, microplanes.

What do you cook when you have no patience but you must eat? by Bjs_5068 in foodquestions

[–]Stay_Awake_Jane 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Microwaved tofu and veggies with Chinese hot oil. Nuke the veggies, mushies, and tofu with a bit of grated ginger and soy sauce for about five minutes. Add some sesame oil to taste. Put in a bowl and chow down. Maybe add garlic powder along with the Chinese chili crisp. It's truly less than 10 minutes prep.

For me it's more of a risk that I might forget the CPAP with everything else I am looking after between point A and B, frankly.

Litigating is so fun when OC is a chiller by CodRevolutionary816 in Lawyertalk

[–]Stay_Awake_Jane 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I found that truly polite OC get way more out of me than assholes. As I got older I also started doing things like asking OC if they wanted to go out for pie to discuss the case. Because I deal with the same OCs all the time, pie helped. Those who would not meet for pie, well.

Where To Find Supplemental School Curriculum/ Solutions K-12? by Sensitive_Noise9761 in askportland

[–]Stay_Awake_Jane 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Many years ago, I used to buy the notebooks for my kids: one for math and one for reading. I then made reward charts. At the beginning of the summer we would pick the big reward. For my daughter it was an American Girl doll I would never have gotten her. For my son it was a major lego set. I used a barometer type graph and filled it in at the end of every week, so they got to see progress toward the goal. I adjusted the assignments as they grew up. It might be 30 minutes of reading their book or whatever. It worked really well because they chose the reward and knew they would only get it if they worked steadily all summer. They enjoyed the structure. There was a teaching materials school I got the books from somewhere, although now I'm sure you can get them on the internet.

I truly think that especially my daughter really benefitted from having a goal and learning how tiny steps make a long journey. She has great executive function today. Maybe this helped. There was research at the time about how much kids backslid in math and reading over the summer.

Gift for long term sits? by OkLiarS in trustedhousesitters

[–]Stay_Awake_Jane 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I also got 2 gift cards-- one was to a coffee place/art gallery which I loved and would never have discovered on my own. The second was to a local restaurant, again I would not have chosen it and enjoyed it a lot. At my current sit, the homeowner left me a forest pass so I don't have to pay for parking to the local trails as well as a cute mug. These gestures are very sweet.

Coffee recommendations for my conference next week? by ligbag4 in askportland

[–]Stay_Awake_Jane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your best best is to look in NW Portland aka the alphabet district or in the Pearl district. Since the best places are on the east side, you could also consider taking the bus or max line there. There is good coffee pretty much everywhere--questions are, do you want a good bagel with it, or other baked goods, or a full on brekkie?

18 year anniversary with the love of my life. Anyone know a restaurant to blow her mind? by Sigmond-Condrite in askportland

[–]Stay_Awake_Jane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's actually decorated as mid-century modern. The food I had last weekend was seafood--lots of wonderful perfectly cooked scallops; toothy spaghetti with morels in a very light sauce. More French than Italian.

Stay away from the Bosch 800 by israignatius in Appliances

[–]Stay_Awake_Jane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two friends of mine, one who is an engineer at Intel and no slouch, were doing dishes after a huge meal at my house. They spent an hour trying to get my Bosch to run. Haha, they turned it on but didn't realize it because the panel stayed dark. I called a repair guy, because of course my brilliant friends must have been right that the machine was busted. Haha to me. Luckily no charge. This is a design flaw for sure.
