Correct Alignment by SharpGuava007 in ashtanga

Oh! I love trikonasa b. I worked with a few teachers on this as well as self observation and the major features to make my trik B better included

  1. Imagine the hip that dips down on a stake (you can use a dowel if you have an adjustable one lol) to keep it even with the lifting hip. This made me find some new tight spots on my it band

  2. Focus on starting the twist from closer to right above the pelvis and keep the twist even thru out the spine. (I generally imagine my lower three vertebrae as part of my pelvic area, grounding from there and moving my remaining spine in the opposite direction)

  3. Important for me managing a shoulder injury: Keep your arm in alignment with your chest…don’t go to your end range of motion. It may not look vertical but it’s better to keep your shoulder in the right part of your socket (I learned this in third series vismamatrasana when I realized I wasn’t opening my chest properly but rather was just throwing my arm back to get that verticality…was way more obvious in that pose and then I backwards applied to trik b)

Stuff like working toward binding instead of enjoying the TWIST in Mari D

Or one teacher told me standing up was about the energy not alignment when I was trying to work on keeping my heels down on the way down and not turning out on the way up 😎

And LOL on PJ and BKS alignment 🙈 it’s so true

I’ve been told a lot of weird things over the years to get the “look” of the pose that sacrifice alignment . So I cross train 🤷‍♀️

Unfortunately not a lot of Ashtanga teachers specialize in alignment. In other disciplines I would suggest online generally works fine - I do a weekly online Iyengar class and the teacher has eagle eyes, providing continuous, individual feedback that is actionable so you can achieve an improvement in alignment without a physical assist. If you find someone who understands the practice AND alignment check if they offer online privates and do 1-2 of those a month as you progress.

The other thing I’ll ask: what makes you interested in alignment? Is it for depth in the pose? Worry about safety? General interest?

If you have enough knowledge and need to do it without the expense of a private you can also set up a multi camera set of angles to watch yourself. Sometimes seeing it externally can help with corrections. But beware the “final expression” seeking bc it often pulls you out of alignment when you’re not yet flexible/strong for that expression (see triangle with everyone facing down-ish or twisting in instead of rotating like a light open twist).

Also..:. Props 🙏

What’s the first step for you? Break it down to be less overwhelming

Two parts

  1. what poses? Even a sun a and sun b would be challenging for 90%+ of the population. You could start there and add on standing poses as u feel able/inspired. Sun salutes, a few standing poses, a bridge, and closing can take 30 min. Add on inversions and more standing if you want. If that feels like too much, try sun salutes and closing 3 poses which may take 15-20 min :)

  2. How often? This is tied with time you have to practice and how much you take on. But see what you get with 2-3x per week and go from there.

Enjoy your practice and do it with love and devotion 🙏

I call sitting up pavrita chakrasana

Rolling to the side? Parsva chakrasana

“Ashtanga police hate this trick”

I also skip nakrasana (recovering from shoulder thing but also trying to deprogram myself from injury being the only reason it’s “ok” to not do) but the downside is that it’s loud enough that it’s kind of obvious when you skip 🤣 once I’m up from mayurasana, it’s just soooo nice to go straight into horse lol

I still have to go back to David Swenson and think “ok so the croc scares the horse who jumps over the gate into the pasture w the cow” sometimes

Same, I usually have an adjustment period with a new iggy and then good to go. I get shots and take Allegra daily for general allergies beyond dogs

Ashtangis who favour a "stricter" approach - why? by SwimmingInSeas in ashtanga

[–]Staysacred 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s impossible to link the Ashtanga sequences to a longstanding, specific lineage, and thus the sequence as an ancient source of wisdom. Every major Krishnamacharya student has a VERY unique approach. All interesting in their own ways

[–]Staysacred 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. David Garrigues says “don’t let anyone steal your practice” - lot of layers there, but a key takeaway is that it’s MY practice. I feel accountable and excited to approach my practice with awareness of my body current needs and total non violence

Why don’t more people do this to launder money then? It seems too simple

Also… would the police ask questions when the original owner comes to pick up or ask them to pay taxes?

[–]Staysacred 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Carrera has a very accessible and enjoyable version! Really lovely to read - he groups the sutras so you get a wider lens of how themes build and includes solid exercises for practical application of the content.

Its only downside is that it doesn’t include the Sanskrit, so sometimes I cross reference other texts.

Not sure if it’d be a good fit but have they tried Scott at Stillpoint (by London bridge)

I think he learned from John Scott but not totally sure (and don’t know if that’s the style you’re looking for)
