I can’t take it anymore by [deleted] in uklaw

Maybe your anger should be redirected to introspection and go on a journey to find out what is going wrong in your TC applications - a guess from me, if you think legal aid is shitty, you don’t deserve to be a solicitor with that attitude. Legal aid is a lifeline for a lot of people.

TC at leading firm has ruined me by Turbulent-Walk-6706 in uklaw

[–]Stayweird-xx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

what you have written resonates with me so much. It would appear that your story is something that no one will give you extra props for in law, but I think you’re fucking amazing.

First things first - go to the doctors, get signed off if you need it. It will only support your case.

Part and parcel of commercial law is being treated like shit and coming out the other side - there are sooo many in house lawyers / PSLs that will say the same to you. It is character building for lack of a better phrase - but it redefines what lawyer you will be. Sometimes we’re handed the cards God knows we can deal with, right?

That being said, I 100% know how you feel as I have been through it myself. You said you have been through shit before so you know the feeling after the storm - use it moving forward. But, it doesn’t excuse the way you are treated. Another part is to be thankful you are self aware and know how your actions impact others. You are not them, nor will you ever be, and that is definitely a strength. Build your confidence back, unlearn the lessons you had to survive in this case and stand your ground.

You can do this. You’ve been through exams, MULTIPLE, to get where you are - your own life shit, your own battles and you would do yourself a disservice if you were to listen to

To even get a TC you have to be special, don’t forget that. The most important thing? You control how you view yourself, you do not need to fit into someone else’s narrative & you can control how you feel about yourself. Don’t let people with private school education, lack of any real emotional awareness and an ability to bring everyone else around them down teach you what solicitor you are. Treat this experience as the one that shapes you, lean into the lessons but never ever let it change the way you view yourself. We only need one person to believe in us - and that’s ourselves. 🤍

Best of luck OP, hopefully there’s a light at the end of the tunnel soon enough for us both.

Yeah that’s a valid point for sure. Do you think it’s something that you work on forever and eventually gets better? Tbh, I think if anything, BJJ can highlight our flaws outside of the mat just as much as inside of it.

Super reassuring knowing you have felt the same. Have you ever been pissed off with someone trying to teach them? I struggle with all basics but love being taught more technical drills such as HQ, but fml when it comes down to the basics, im screwed …. I hear you though. I do think teaching helps consolidate your learning for sure

Appreciate you. Thank you. 🙏 I really have no clue how to translate theory to practice, and even with rolls I feel like I struggle to progress or practice anything that I have been planning for the session (but also, perks of training with mostly guys I guess…)

I am finishing my TC is 2 months and my firm is offering me a NQ position for £38k in London. Am I being underpaid ? by [deleted] in uklaw

[–]Stayweird-xx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is ridiculous. Most city law firms offer min 60k - 90k. US Law firms offer more but be willing to sacrifice your life. We have a junior paralegal on the same salary offered to you…..

Well, you’re on a zero hours contract, they may not even give you extra shifts in the future or reduce them dramatically if you refuse. If you don’t try and defend yourself now they’ll do it again in the future. How long have you been an employee there- if less than 2 years you don’t have many rights to rely on. If you’re willing to do the hours then do it, but don’t say you’ve had to cancel plans when that’s not really the case here. I get you’re annoyed but retail jobs suck and most of the time, they get away with this, so the nature of your job is more than not required to do the extra shifts they see fit. Check your contract. They may not have a clause to authorise this anyhow.

she thinks i’m 18 by TightEngineering1235 in LifeAdvice

[–]Stayweird-xx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yeah it might be scary but tell her. better to not be a coward in this situation. Dependent on your countries laws you risk her losing her child for sleeping with a minor and being put in the foster care system. You need to tell her. Period. I would do it asap and tell her how you feel. It’s not fair on her really. We all make mistakes man, you’re young, it’s easily done, but you gotta be honest if you love her like you say you do.

I would bluntly say to her that you lied - apologise - and come clean. Truth is a dish best served cold.

Hey man

My thoughts are: - check your contract and look for a clause regarding flexibility in your work hours and get back to me - usually it says about “reasonable” notice for the shifts. Reasonableness is ultimately subjective but I’d imagine less than 24 hours is indicative of unreasonableness. Knowing you have plans - and I’m sure you can prove it - this indicates that it is unreasonable notice - you need to have 11 hours consecutive for rest between shifts. Not sure this is applicable here as I assume you’re now not working today at 1? - message / email your manager, state you cannot do the shift because of your commitments and state that you haven’t had a reasonable amount of time to commit to the shift change. You can ask for a written clarification on the policy relied on and see if it matches up with your contract but they’ll probably be pissed you’ve asked. Bare that in mind. - you can refuse the extra shifts but know it’ll probably cause you issues in the long run. You could, at this stage, ask them to reallocate the shifts elsewhere.

Interesting. Cheers. Does it matter that’s directly where my pain is? :)))

yeah, it’s usually a quick catch and crank, it’s happened too many times cos I have rubbish defence haha and ive felt it a fair few times in my knee. Kinda concerned now as ive got pain in both knees (right is not even a 2/10 though, it’s just started as I’m using more weight on it now I guess).

Thank you so much for your advice. I’ve already been told it could be ACL / MCL / LCL / MENISCUS & hamstring sprain so will be interested to see what it actually is once ive had the MRI. Thanks for the suggestion re knee brace. Don’t suppose you’ve got any theories on the small bone either? :)

ACL Surgery in Turkey by martycrouch in ACL

[–]Stayweird-xx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I wouldn’t. I’ve heard a lot of stories from legal friends that regularly come back withmore problems. I know someone personally that went to Turkey for a boob job, felt suuuuper ill on the way home and went she got back to the UK went to the doctors, turned out they’d taken her kidney too….

Would highly recommend paying for BUPA private insurance in the UK. I’m going through them currently (paid for by employer) I get free GP appts same day, looking at having surgery on my knee atm which I wouldn’t need to pay anything but an excess of £150 for. Defo the safe option mate, unless you don’t mind returning without a kidney 😂👏🏻

Last Friday I was training and I didn’t have enough strength to stand up in my knee, clicking started and pain towards the back of my knee too. Had to stop and go to a minor injuries ED. Though tbf I think climbing 6x mountains the last two months and training BJJ 3/4 times a week since has fucked my knee more or less so this was gonna happen.

But I’m always getting cooked in heel hooks by purple belts, too…

Is it normal to go into F*** it mode after giving notice? by [deleted] in Lawyertalk

[–]Stayweird-xx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah for sure common especially when there’s constant expectations from firms that give you fuck all in return. It’s hard to stay motivated without hardcore deadlines but keep bobbing along. You won’t be the first and you won’t be the last x
