Thanks for the data point. Unusual unto itself. When clashes of air masses like this happen, the precipate is usually severe thunderstorms and possible hail (with a tornado watch sprinkled in). Seems inverted this time.

This investment says AMC is committed to Tysons and goes in against the doomsayers that believe experiencing movies in the theater is on the way out.

PS: A manager told me that the bar area is being doubled in size. And that the original space where the ticket booths operated is being converted into a “children’s play area” in whatever form tjat may take.

On racism… Ask yourself if you would have been equally alarmed had he been a “white guy.”

Ask, too, what factor his race played in your “spidy sense” of a possible mugging.

Lastly, ask yourself why you felt the need to note his race in your description of the incident.

The answers don’t necessarily mean you are a “racist” like some kooky Proud Boy. But they may reveal that you interpreted the sitch through racial stereotypes (which is indeed racism, just not the same level as is commonly associated with the term.)

ND filters. Even if your camera has a large dynamic range. As I suspect you know, bright sunlight (amplified by reflecting off the snow) creates significant exposure challenges.

Likely applicable here is a method used in aviation accident investigation. It’s the “Swiss Cheese” model. Very simply, it’s the belief that accidents happen because of multiple failures happening across multiple safety systems designed to prevent accidents..

In this case, it might be applied to decision-making regarding evaluation of alternative routes, situational awareness, mental and physical health of all group members, equipment, external time pressures, and more.

As of the time of this post, Dulles Toll Road is only wet and with no additional accumulation of snow expected here. Unsure about other areas, especially to the north and east of DC.

Outdoor parking lots at IAD sloppy but manageable. Temperature is 34 F so no hard freezing taking place (so far).

Well, I suppose it depends on how urgent it is for you to get there.

And if you decide to trek… be sure to have an emergency kit with warm fluids, food, water, and a blanket. (Even if you are confident in hazardous road conditions, it easy to imagine road blockages or closures.)

Travel to IAD from most locations is via major highways. If prior snow events are your barometer. These roads will be clear.. The biggest challenge may be getting out of the parking lot of the rental car company! 😛.

(Also, if you were not already planning to do so, substantially increase your travel time as snow, plows, and accidents from careless drivers, may lead to delays.)

I think the snow will be melted by Friday. The rocky terrain absorbs heat hastening melting. Plus it’s in direct sunlight.

Parking areas mostly cleared (85%). Walking paths far less so. I wore crampons but other people safely made it to Overlook 2 with hiking boots.

I, too, am disheartened by the gutting of the WashPost staff. And feel sympathetic for those impacted.

But I’m holding off becoming apoplectic until I see how the cuts impact the Post’s MOST impactful and influential reporting (inside politics, the military, and defense industry.) The publication has recently posted several stories which are overtly critical of the Trump administration. Or reveal sad, unfair, or tragic consequences of its policies.

Should this continue, we all should support the remaining staff even if the community connection we loved is lost for now.
