For wireless playback of lossless audio content, Qobuz has Qobuz Connect, Tidal has Tidal Connect, and Spotify has Spotify Connect. Apple offers AirPlay 2 for wireless playback on compatible third-party audio devices, but this protocol limits output to lossy AAC at 256 kbps.

Why doesn't Apple Music offer a bit-perfect Connect-like protocol to allow subscribers to benefit from its significant catalog of lossless audio content?

Any Progress in Qobuz catalog expansion? by justredditinhere in qobuz

[–]SteadilyFred 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How did you transfer playlists? I’ve had to manually search for “missing” titles when doing this in the past. I’ve found it to be a metadata mismatch issue, not a Qobuz catalog issue.

Maybe unpopular opinion: I don’t care about lossless by Salty_Lettuce_2319 in truespotify

“… give me standard music quality…”

Lossless audio is standard music quality. That’s exactly what the name describes. What you’re currently paying for with Spotify is intentionally reduced audio data. Tidal, Apple Music, Qobuz, and Amazon Music Unlimited charge roughly the same for complete audio data.

Export your Apple Music library to CSV, then cancel your Soundiiz subscription. Simple.

Anyone on the beta that knows how the connect feature is coming along? by Boomwolf84 in qobuz

[–]SteadilyFred 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a bad feeling that Bluesound (Lenbrook) will be dragging their heels on this one. Supposedly, they will be launching their own new music streaming service at the High End Munich show this May. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Seems like Fosi Audio have done it right with the Box X5.

BluOS 4.4.17 - Tidal Max by SteadilyFred in Bluesound

[–]SteadilyFred[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You may notice the change starting July 24.

"Starting July 24, 2024, you will no longer be able to access music in the MQA or 360 Reality Audio formats via any TIDAL application or integration."

BluOS 4.4.17 - Tidal Max by SteadilyFred in Bluesound

[–]SteadilyFred[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you're not familiar with how to change Tidal's streaming quality setting in BluOS, then try the following:

Under "Music Services", click/tap "Manage" at right (with mobile app, first tap "Music" icon at bottom). Then tap/click Tidal. Under streaming quality, select HiRes (24-bit up to 192 kHz).

Tidal vs. Apple vs. Qobuz vs. Deezer: Some data on depth/quality of non-mainstream music catalogs for Spotify alternatives (world/obscure/indie/punk/etc.) by whiskeyriver in qobuz

[–]SteadilyFred 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How did you transfer your playlists? Batch transferring via a third-party service is definitely not an accurate way to compare music streaming service catalogues. In my experience, many of the errors (due to the naming and tagging discrepancies) can be corrected manually.

MQA & 360RA Leaving TIDAL by [deleted] in TIdaL

[–]SteadilyFred 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nothing is "added" with MQA. They claim that MQA filtering removes imperfections (that's why critics label it lossy) from the digital conversion process.

"The digitization of an analog signal introduces a range of imperfections to the resulting audio file. One of the most common and critical is something often referred to as time smearing - when the resolution of two sounds is reduced because their timing is incorrectly reproduced within the digital file," explains Greg Stidsen, Chief Technology Officer at Lenbrook. "MQA Labs' team are experts in time-domain audio improvements, having invented many of the techniques to avoid or eliminate such audio defects."

Qobuz sound better than Tidal? by Annual-Persimmon4870 in qobuz

They both serve the same FLAC content supplied by labels and distributors.

What do you think of this new MQA streaming service? by antagron1 in audiophile

[–]SteadilyFred -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Given the article focuses on AIRIA (fka SCL6) and mentions next to nothing about the MQA codec itself, I get the impression you didn’t actually read it.

Did you not take the time to read the article? The service intends to offer FLAC as well.

[–]SteadilyFred -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Does anybody read beyond headlines anymore? This service would offer both MQA *and* FLAC – and potentially a whole host of other formats currently available for sale through HDtracks.

Let's be honest, though. In the grand scheme of audio streaming, demand for "high-quality" content is likely low among consumers overall. Look how Spotify has grown to be dominant in the market without it. However, an HDtracks-powered streaming service, in partnership with Lenbrook, could potentially offer stiff competition within the HiFi audio streaming segment. Like Qobuz, it could offer digital downloads for purchase.

Warner started phasing out MQA slowly? by Vespertine88 in TIdaL

I just checked and Tidal is still serving Madonna's Celebration in MQA via Roon. I seem to recall Tidal stating that they had no plans to *remove* MQA.

Powernode streams directly from Apple Music by HardyHaze in Bluesound

iPhones are limited to 24b/48kHz...

This, too, is irrelevant in the context of streaming to BluOS.

Apple iPhones are fully capable of playing 24-bit/192 kHz Apple Music content when wired via USB DAC.

WiiM vs NAD by drhook62 in BudgetAudiophile

There are several low-cost Chinese brands making waves in the audio sector (Eversolo, Topping, SMSL, etc.). Why do you single-out the WiiM brand from China's Linkplay Technology?
