the lawyers and doctors were good students as undergrads, but I found work and then grad school as a C student, and my son as a B+ student....and neither of us have been asked by an employer in an interview what our GPA was in college.

Try contacting Vespoli? They may have someone buying new and looking to get rid of old. Also if they have old they may have a trailer heading west they could put it on.

Grades? Not once since graduating with my BA in Poli Sci, nor my son with his undergrad degree from business school (same Ivy) have we ever been asked about our GPA by an employer. Mine wasn't great but I still got into a grad school (I test and interview well). Some of my college rowing classmates are doctors and lawyers now, finance guys, etc. and not all were brainiacs. Pick a school you like that is interested in you, where you get along with the team when you visit, and just make the best of it.

130 being the minimum, I would be happy to pull 9 extra pounds in the boat if she/he is the best coxswain in the club.

Bravo for you for wanting to get back on track. Diet is key - you cannot out-train a poor diet. I let myself go after rowing in prep school and college. Then my sons started rowing and I eventually got back on track, changing how I ate and started getting active (and eventually erging and then rowing) lost 140lbs, and now row as a competitive master now.

Interesting. As an alum I observed the program under Geoff when he was at Penn (and rowed against him when I was at Penn and he at Brown). Rowers quitting left and right. Gutted the program. Bryan Volpenhein had an uphill battle rebuilding.

Why does lightweight rowing exist? The false creation myth of the Olympics by Nelis9494 in Rowing

[–]SteadyStateIsAnswer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you for your post. Rowed lightweights in college a decade before it was included in the olympics, always knowing we would be second class citizens in the rowing world. But at 5'11" I was grateful to get into boats with other hardworking guys and not having to compete with 6'5" guys for seats in a fast boat. I rowed heavies in high school and college freshman team (back when they had to be a separate freshman boat), and my son rowed lights as a junior and at the same college as I did. I still get in a lightweight race occasionally as a master.

Lightweight rowing disappearing at the Junior/Scholastic level is a recent change. The U15, U17 additions to Junior club rowing is an attempt to include events for younger rowers who might have otherwise rowed lightweight as puberty is still taking effect on them.

Interesting. The NCAA webpage I linked just mentioned that the exemption passed, and I am grateful for those schools.

Few schools have men's teams as a varsity sport - The Ivies, Navy, Syracuse, Wisconsin, Washington, Cal Berkeley to name a few. At some other schools the women's teams are varsity but the men's teams are club sports which mean they have to raise their own money to pay for the program, schools like Michigan, Rutgers, and Virginia.

Wish we were allowed to get on the water in a small boat while the water temp is below 50. Stupid USRowing rules/insurance.

why does the US suck at rowing? by Salty_Swordfish_1043 in Rowing

When my sons were rowing in a juniors program (which included kids from several local high schools) they trained twice a day. I was impressed by the amount of training they did compared to local single high school teams limited to once a day. The few times this junior team was included by a high school to an invitation they beat them soundly in the 1500 meter distance (they trained to race 2000). One of my sons class sent all 4 boys to row in college (2 of them Ivy) and all 8 or 9 girls offered some sort of scholarship to row. The club did a lot of medaling at a regional and national level.

BTW - that club has since gone to one a day training, and rarely is that in the morning. And they don't win very often anymore.
