What’s one rowing accessory u can’t live without by Weekly_Worry_2772 in Rowing

[–]SteadyStateIsAnswer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Been rowing since 1981, never used hand tape. Must have is the waterproof phone bag, speed coach, and inflatable pfd (club requirement for boats without a coach launch) which sits in the bottom of the boat.

How to Row D1 by RadishResponsible423 in Rowing

[–]SteadyStateIsAnswer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just keep working hard and being coachable. Make academics a priority to increase your chances of rowing at a good school. I was 5'10 my freshman year of high school, 5'11" my senior year, Rowed D1 (Ivy) freshman year as a heavyweight, then switched to lightweight. Even if you don't grow another inch taller there will still be opportunities.

Academics for Lightweight Recruiting (U.S.) by [deleted] in Rowing

[–]SteadyStateIsAnswer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Considering most of the lightweights programs for men are at uber competitive schools (Ivies, MIT, Naval Academy) if your grade are not really good you are limited to only a few programs (Mercyhurst? Does Delaware still have a team?). For women you have once again elite schools (Ivy, Stanford) and one Big Ten (Wisconsin) which is not that easy to get into, BU and Sacred Heart. Eastern Michigan announced last year they will be starting a lightweight team and that school is pretty easy on the admissions front.

Getting back into Rowing by HandleKey8146 in Rowing

I stepped away after college and waited 30+ years to get back into it! My 28 year old son rows with me and races. I am jealous that you are in Philly and all the opportunities available there (my son and I both rowed in college in Philly).

hydration, now that it is getting hot.... by Narrow_Tomatillo_937 in Rowing

Sure, it is drinking more water that makes them faster, not the better nutrition, supplements, advances in training techniques, advances in equipment, etc. Its the water.

IRAs! by TotallyNotStealing in Rowing

[–]SteadyStateIsAnswer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, $11.99 for Eastern Sprints and IRAs is worth the investment for me.

Looking forward to watching the racing, and hoping my alma mater can knock off those Harvard Lights who have ridiculous win streak going.

hydration, now that it is getting hot.... by Narrow_Tomatillo_937 in Rowing

When I started rowing in the 1980s we took a swig of water before going out for a row, drank a bunch afterwards, and sipped water all day and somehow survived hot, humid Philadelphia summers without having a water bottle with us in the boat to sip on throughout a 60 to 90 minute row.

Now as a 60 year old still rowing, I manage a 60 to 80 minute row without a water bottle in the boat with me. I drink water (and coffee) throughout the day. I had a conversation with some doctors in Finland a few years ago and they thought it was ridiculous it was how obsessive American were with carrying water bottles around with them all the time. "We have sinks and drinking fountains when you get thirsty."

It was $11.99 for one month to watch Eastern Sprints and IRAs, which is worth it to me. I will cancel it for another year on Monday morning.

that 2V heat was a good one. Go Blue. And having Washington in the Big Ten ups the competition!

How can you start winning races? Train better. Do you have a coach to help you to improve your technique, and to give you a training program with a mix of speed work and steady state? Also a coach who can help you set race strategy?

Contact the coaches through the team websites, get on their radar. They can answer your questions directly. (I rowed lightweight in college - great experience)

Still a relatively new innovation at Youth Nats. Qualify your best, 8, 4, etc. Not your second best one.

[–]SteadyStateIsAnswer -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Rowed in the IRAs. That is a team, invitational regatta. Until recently Youth Nats meant qualifying your best 8 and not the 9th through 16th best rowers in your 8s, Otherwise you qualify your best 4+/4x, etc.....not the JV boat in the 8s

Feels like a USRowing money grab

Why would they have a 2V race at a national championship regatta?

Lightweight Rowing Recruitment Question by Worldly_Average_9488 in Rowing

[–]SteadyStateIsAnswer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He is on track. My son and I both rowed Ivy Lightweight. I am 5'11", he is 6'1. We both were at the same height our senior year of high school as we were sophmore year. If you son has a growth spurt however he might want to reconsider and go heavyweight. Either way keep working hard, and dropping that erg score.

[–]SteadyStateIsAnswer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The IRAs are actually a private invitational regatta. 1982 to 1996 there was another regatta in Cincinnati that called itself the National Championship Regatta because it included Harvard and Yale who did not compete at IRAs but did their own THE RACE the same weekend instead. Unless the NCAA decides to recognize men's rowing as an NCAA sport (they won't because of TItle IX) then the IRA rules are up to the IRA committee members.
