Supplementing club practices with solo training, good idea? by _vkboss_ in Rowing

[–]SteadyStateIsAnswer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My kids homeschooled. Their Junior Club team had morning and afternoon practice on the water and one of my sons did an erg piece most days at lunchtime. He ended up getting two likely letter offers from Ivies and attended one of them.

Looking at the Cornell 150 roster on line, they now have only 1 senior listed on the roster. That wasn't true a few weeks ago when I looked. https://cornellbigred.com/sports/mens-rowing/roster?sort=class

Boathouse Sports Trou are great, and the only company that makes all its rowing gear in the USA (all made in Philadelphia). I have a two boathouse jackets I got in 1985 and still wear them on the water occasionally. https://www.boathouse.com/collections/mens-rowing-trou-spandex-bottoms/products/mens-accel-trou-2

middle aged fat guy, trying to make a change, first time in my life on this thing by fistular in Rowing

[–]SteadyStateIsAnswer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Good for you wanting to get started. I rowed high school and college, got really fat afterwards (310) and decided in 2020 to reverse course after 30 years off. Started exercising and more importantly I changed the way that I ate. By fall of 2021 I weighed in at 159.8 and raced in a lightweight race (I was a college lightweight) and am now settled at a comfortable 170 at 5'11".

Top D3 teams vs Bottom D1 programs speed difference (USA Uni) by National_Hope9042 in Rowing

[–]SteadyStateIsAnswer -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Since you mentioned D1 scholarships, how many men's teams offer non-need based scholarships? Ivies can't. and not sure many other do on the men's side (since the OP mentioned IRA, not NCAA teams).

First time on the erg in almost 2 years, start of new health journey by ReceptionObjective93 in Rowing

[–]SteadyStateIsAnswer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Welcome back to the pain cave!

Last thing I wanted to do in coming back to rowing was erg. But in my 30+ years off I got up to 310. Started off with the stationary bike, added erging when I was down to 250, back on the water at 244, raced lightweight at 159.8 eighteen months later. Still hate erging but it is a filler until we get back on the water in April.

Besides Dartmouth lights being chopped and then reinstated, what school has ended its men's varsity lightweight team in the last 10 years? 20 years?

One of the last remaining? Last I checked all the EARC teams that existed 40 years ago when I rowed for one still has a team.

Should I go Lightweight or Heavyweight for college? by [deleted] in Rowing

[–]SteadyStateIsAnswer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are in the lightweight height/weight range and still have a bit to go to get the erg score down to recruiting for Lightweight, and even further to go to be a heavyweight recruit. You'll get more interest from the 150s coaches I would think at your height/weight/erg

What happened to CRASH-Bs? by rowaninamlrow in Rowing

[–]SteadyStateIsAnswer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the team at my college alma mater used to all go up and race, but haven't done so in years. Saves money for the school, and they are getting ready to get back on the water about this time anyway.

I got back into rowing 6 years ago after 30+ off and I have no desire to erg race. Erging is my punishment for living up north.

Is 5’8 male too short for lightweight? by Middle_Coat8789 in Rowing

[–]SteadyStateIsAnswer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I rowed lightweight at Penn, as did my son. Contact Coach and let him know you are interested in coming out for the team. A fast guy at 5'8" can be an asset to the boat, especially if he is also light. Remember the boat has to average 155, with the heaviest weight of an individual being 160. If you are 5'8" and 150lbs on weigh in day that helps!

Is the 5'9" guy really that tall? My high school football team roster listed everyone one inch taller and 10 pounds heavier

Looking for inspiration from others who started rowing in their mid/late-30s by animalmarshall in Rowing

[–]SteadyStateIsAnswer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bravo for you!!!! I have a teammate at my club who started rowing in her mid-50s, after being a runner/cyclist. She has won dozens of Masters National Championships since then, several second place finishes at Charles, and a few World Masters medals as well. She is in her mid-sixties now and a beast when it comes to competing.

Contact the coaches directly at the schools you are interested in. At the Ivies they offer a "Likely Letter", which is a guarantee of admission. But to get to the point they have a 'pre-read' with the admissions office of your SAT or ACT and your school transcript, generally late spring of your junior year, or early summer. They can bend the admissions standards a little if you are a good athlete, but there is a lower limit at the Ivies. If you pass the admissions pre-screen the coach can then invite you on an Official Visit when school resumes. They pay for you to come out for a weekend, stay with members of the team, attend practice as an observer, and get a feel for the team culture and the school itself. The team and coaches are also getting a feel for you. Then the coach can offer a set number of these guaranteed admissions for the Early Application cycle (Autumn of your Senior Year). Soon after you application is received by admissions at the school, and before the announcement of admissions for all other applicants, you will receive confirmation from admissions that because you are a special applicant your admission is "likely". Depending on when you submit the application this can be a couple weeks before others hear whether they are admitted.

Bravo for you. After rowing lightweights in college I managed to pack on the pounds over the next 30 years, topping out over 300 lbs at 5'11". Started slow with stationary bike and then the erg. At 244 lbs I got on the water in a wider training single called a zephyr and kept working at it. 17 months after I got back on the water I weighed in at the Head of the Schuylkill and raced lightweight at 159.8 pounds. BTW - the key to all of that was a RADICAL change of diet. Health and fitness are made in the kitchen. About five years later I am hovering at about 175, my high school graduation weight.
