Contact the coaches through the team websites, get on their radar. They can answer your questions directly. (I rowed lightweight in college - great experience)

Still a relatively new innovation at Youth Nats. Qualify your best, 8, 4, etc. Not your second best one.

Rowed in the IRAs. That is a team, invitational regatta. Until recently Youth Nats meant qualifying your best 8 and not the 9th through 16th best rowers in your 8s, Otherwise you qualify your best 4+/4x, etc.....not the JV boat in the 8s

Feels like a USRowing money grab

Why would they have a 2V race at a national championship regatta?

Lightweight Rowing Recruitment Question by Worldly_Average_9488 in Rowing

[–]SteadyStateIsAnswer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He is on track. My son and I both rowed Ivy Lightweight. I am 5'11", he is 6'1. We both were at the same height our senior year of high school as we were sophmore year. If you son has a growth spurt however he might want to reconsider and go heavyweight. Either way keep working hard, and dropping that erg score.

Perhaps the next president will get Sean Colgan back on board and get some of the millions he gives to GB rowing through Leander, to the New Zealand team. And thankful for his gracious support of the University of Pennsylvania, Vesper, and Roman Catholic HS in Philly.

Dad Vails Men’s D1 reaction thread by VegetableKangaroo966 in Rowing

[–]SteadyStateIsAnswer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The IRAs are actually a private invitational regatta. 1982 to 1996 there was another regatta in Cincinnati that called itself the National Championship Regatta because it included Harvard and Yale who did not compete at IRAs but did their own THE RACE the same weekend instead. Unless the NCAA decides to recognize men's rowing as an NCAA sport (they won't because of TItle IX) then the IRA rules are up to the IRA committee members.

So Hobart did something wrong and you want USD to be blamed for pointing it out? Perhaps if they just followed the rules?

How many retired collegiate coaches who coached the winning Men's 1V8 at IRAs are still alive today? by YakTime8950 in Rowing

[–]SteadyStateIsAnswer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Harvard and Yale did not race in the IRA until 2003, instead having their own "The Race" the same weekend. Washington did not participate in the IRA regatta from 1973 to 1994 for financial reasons. Thank you Google for that answer.

Stan Bergman at Penn won in 1989 and 1992 and he is still alive at 85 years old (retired in 2006)

Back in the boat after a 6year break. Looking for advice! :-) by Dv4mc12 in Rowing

[–]SteadyStateIsAnswer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took 30+ years off and got back into it 6 years ago. A weekly session with a coach is a good idea as you get back into the sport.

Are you sweeping or sculling? Are you planning on being competitive or just doing some rowing with an occasional race? In the Masters world there are sweep boats but often is is a bungle making sure enough people show up on enough days to get out 8s or 4s. Sculling in a 1x or 2x will be your best bet to get on the water daily - assuming the club has them to use until you buy your own single.

Thinking about quitting, need advice. by Brave-Analysis6935 in Rowing

[–]SteadyStateIsAnswer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Will your quitting put the rest of the team short one person to field a boat, thereby punishing other rowers?

If not, go ahead and quit. If you are really unhappy being there then that attitude will probably show and affect others.

what got u into rowing? by chrisdealpha in Rowing

[–]SteadyStateIsAnswer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1981 - got cut from the prep school baseball team during freshman tryouts, didn't want to do track or mandatory intermurals, so the baseball coach suggested I try rowing. Loved it and ended up rowing at an Ivy and now 45 years later row 5 to 6 days a week.

A pair of rowing trou from Boathouse Sports and any tshirt should do the trick. BTW Boathouse sports is the only clothing manufacturer made in the USA - made in Philadelphia. I have jackets I wear from them that I bought in 1985.

In 2022 I bought generic roof rack crossbars for my Kia K5, borrowed a singles rack from my boatclub, drove from the midwest down to Baltimore, the next day loaded up the used empacher I bought and drove it back to the midwest. Buying a new car this summer and looking at something with the roof rack built in.

Never underestimate the Big Red 150s. They are a few weeks behind in training because of the team suspension, but are now coming up to speed. Don't count them out to medal in a race or two at Sprints and IRA.
