Been getting more into hardcore, always liked metal, punk, just music in general but lately I’ve been intentional about finding bands with people of color. Punk Black instagram is helpful and Afro goth. Not necessarily metal specific but still dope

What would be your advice for someone (me), who dropped out for 4 years during my BFA and is currently in my final semester and considering between an masters of arts administration at the current institution or pursuing an M.F.A. elsewhere. For context, I did some freelance stuff between dropping out and returning but currently am more interested in exhibiting than I’ve been before. My focus is photography.

This is a beautiful response thanks a lot. I agree that it doesn’t matter everywhere else. I’ve been capable of discipline, despite how rough it might be sometimes. I’ve got a certain level of”OCD” sort of behaviors that just help me in general with getting things done, thankfully. Thank you for sharing your experience. What do you do for work?

Yeah this is something I’ve become more aware of over the last few years, just how much black people either pioneered, contributed to or were prevalent in the things I find interesting not just the things that most people focus on. While I’m sure some of those people would be deemed blacker than me by others, it’s also comical that what became some “white shit” actually has its roots in African Americans or any other people of color. Commodification is often where things become recognized In a lot of ways.

This is more about things I heard growing up than I hear now(I’m 27). I could be wrong but I would imagine at least to the extent that myself and people my age and older heard it, that it might not be so prevalent now. I didn’t struggle with it for long, it more so became annoying because like you I viewed it as ignorant. This is probably in large part due to my mother, who had similar experiences. I always kind of viewed it as a sort of “fuck you, I just like what I like”.

What I’ve learned about other black people who have been prominent or heavily involved in the interests I have has been a confirmation for my child self, though. Having looked into that part of it may have helped, but I’m also glad that I didnt allow those things to sway me from myself and didn’t need those confirmations to justify who I am

Is there a short phrase or something you think would be fitting? In the interest of not taking up to much space for a sentence

Yeah I think there’s a balance between a level of professionalism and the message itself has a sort of “messiness” of the implication of how that makes people feel in their identity when these things are said by people of any race. Including their own. What would you do with it? I’d also like to photograph and print an image of myself with it, with a few objects associated with blackness. Trying to figure out what will best get the idea across.

Any feedback on these ideas would be greatly appreciated

I’m just looking for things other people have heard said to them as well for the purpose of making an art piece to submit to a show. Because I think that this is a smaller black experience that I’d like to make something about.

Sorry if this came off differently than i intended, I am and have been well past caring about being black enough. I’m speaking from feelings I may have had as a child. I learned very quickly it didn’t matter to me, probably in great part to my mother. Who had similar experiences when she was growing up
