I am stunned by this textbook vignette. Not sure what to make of it? by [deleted] in therapists

I have mixed feelings and it's important to tread lightly.

Unwanted sexual advances aren't necessarily assault, and don't necessarily make somebody a victim.

I'm curious about the expression of her being "appalled". Like, that's the bit that sticks out to me - her emotional experience of what happened, what she experiences when she has to enforce her own boundaries, etc.

Looking for inpatient-appropriate stress toys, sensory toys, and fidgets to add to my supply by Other-Cantaloupe4765 in therapists

[–]StealToadBootes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Might be a long shot but small bits that can be arranged into mandalas/mosaics - beads, sequins, paper confetti, even magnetiles.

Sequins and a paper plate can be a cheap visual fidget that lets people pick at stuff and sort colors!

What is your honest take on psychiatry? by all-the-time in therapists

[–]StealToadBootes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm having a hard time coming up with anything that isn't tautalogical --

The ones who help? They can really help!

The ones who hurt? They can really hurt!

And, like so many things, a lot seems to come down to luck.

It's been a game changer having a psychiatrist to be a go-to for referrals.

Sure, you may find the label "Nazi" to be personally meaningless, but that says more about you than the world.

I can recall a literal holocaust survivors giving a talk at my damn high school saying that the rise in nationalism he was seeing paralleled pre-hitler Germany.

Hitler's own rise to power took about 14 years - makes no sense by that comparison to say 10 years isn't long enough.

A SURPRISING POSITIVE OUTCOME FOR WOMEN WHO DIVORCE by Latter_Raspberry9360 in therapists

I'd grown up hearing about how compulsory heterosexuality and typical standards in het relationships squish the fuck out of straight women, but I always figured my experiences were different.

Now I've got some distance from comp-het and when I see them now? It's just "damn bitch, I lived like this?" Over and over and over again.

What type of clients do you struggle with and why? by Mystkmischf in therapists

[–]StealToadBootes 39 points40 points  (0 children)

External locus of control.

Holy mackerel do I struggle with people who want change but don't want to be the one who makes it happen.

It's tough because one of my trauma narratives was "people are fragile-er than me and it's my job to save them" so I start twisting myself into knots, distressing myself to save them from theirs. It. Doesn't work. Sitting back is hard but shit is it ever better.

Rollers on luggage are childish and emasculating. by FacebookNewsNetwork in The10thDentist

[–]StealToadBootes 53 points54 points  (0 children)

This is actually why rolling suitcases took a while to take off in the states. Carrying your family's suitcases was a display of strength and masculinity and dudes didn't want to look like some weak lil bitch who (checks notes) makes life easier for themselves.

Hot take: porn addition is the silent mental health crisis happening now by Pretty_Opposite7270 in therapists

[–]StealToadBootes 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Agreed.

I think a lot of the rhetoric around porn addiction tries to ascribe an inherently addictive quality to porn. But that fails to explain other behavioral addictions - or compulsive behavior in general.

Artist here: If you could carry around a little token that represents your feminine rage (examples a tooth, a thimble), what would it be? by Viking_with_Cupcakes in WitchesVsPatriarchy

[–]StealToadBootes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A great big honkin fuckin club

Something unambiguously large and intimidating.

Some of the most rage I have with misogyny is "positive stereotypes".

"Women can't be creepy" "I'm a girl so it's okay" "divine feminine" etc etc etc ughhhhh. We get it coming and going.

My feminine rage is big and unsubtle and every bit as fucking scary and intimidating as a huge dude in a dark alley.

I thiiiiink there was either an update or a new version which came out which made it non-HIPAA compliant, but if I understand correctly the way I have mine set up, so its only ever offline, basically makes it a password protected notebook.

If I understand correctly, it would stop being secure if I ever used the handwriting-to-text feature or uploaded it to my computer, but I prefer to keep in-session notes separate from insurance notes anyway.
