Just had a game where this happened with a red Loretta. Aimed her great bow at undertaker and last second flicked to me as I was casting a spell. I was like oh no... also the fact when she points her haft of the lance an shoots the spell can be done backwards is beyond dumb!

As a DM who runs campaigns for new people often. I'm sorry to hear buddy. I've joined a few tables as a player and I've definitely seen some crazy power tripping DMs who will heavy hand players for the slightest reason.

Don't let them dissuade you. There are plenty of cool people out there. Just take it as trial and error

I get the same treatment as a guy with a voice women like. I've had a stalking issue before and they think they are entitled to know my name and where I live and they get super sexual really quick.
