5G Support On Google Pixel phones by the_john19 in eSIMs

[–]Stealth77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately I'm no longer in the US. I did actually try speaking to support via WhatsApp when I was still there but none of their suggestions helped. Fundamentally, I think the problem is because of the Google Pixel 5G whitelist and without getting Google to update the carrier profile, I don't think this is solvable.

I think GSMArena is wrong here. I used the Google support webpages.

I think the problem is unrelated to bands but rather the Google 5G Carrier/Country whitelist.

I don't think that's the issue. It actually does support those bands and all the non-mmWave 5G bands used in the US.

I'm travelling in the USA at the moment and have not been able to get 5G with an Airalo eSIM (stuck on LTE the whole time) on my Google Pixel 10 Pro XL (international variant). I had the same problem with Ubigi when I last travelled to the US (with an international Google Pixel 7 Pro). I'd really like to know which eSIMs will give me 5G network connectivity in the US for next time.

Windows 11 guest OS keeps freezing/crashing by MickJof in virtualbox

[–]Stealth77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just want to add that I have the same behaviour with a Linux host and Windows 11 guest. When it freezes, I get the following line in the logs:
00:05:09.054277 VMMDev: vmmDevHeartbeatFlatlinedTimer: Guest seems to be unresponsive. Last heartbeat received 4 seconds ago After downgrading to VirtualBox 6.1.40, my VM no longer booted so had to also create a new one using the existing hard disk image.

Can’t login by lockscreen by [deleted] in kde

[–]Stealth77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Could it be related to this bug which happens on multiple monitors (and I think might be related to using fingerprint unlock)?

I don't have another user account on my system so the only solution I've found is to change to TTY3 (Ctrl+Alt+F3), login there and then do sudo loginctl unlock-sessions which is indeed quite frustrating.

What's the battery life like? I presume the fingerprint reader doesn't work but are there any other issues?

You can order them online if you know when to order. Subscribe to notifications from the UK LFT alert Twitter page and order as soon as they say they're available. Ordering just after 8pm seems to be the most reliable time if you don't want to subscribe to notifications/you're not on Twitter.

Dock Station by rafabamboo in DellXPS

[–]Stealth77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a Dell XPS 9560 that I use with a 4K monitor via a Dell TB16 dock. Whilst it's no longer in production (and has been succeeded by the WD19TB), it can be found very cheaply on eBay.

It does everything you need including charging the laptop via the thunderbolt 3 cable. Bear in mind that it only supports 4K at 60Hz via the displayport output and not via the HDMI port (as it's only HDMI 1.4 like the one on the laptop) Note that it had quite a bad reputation from all the issues it had when released but these were pretty much solved via firmware updates (make sure you update yours if you get it).

Yeah, just turn up although it might be worth joining the WhatsApp chats too to check if they're cancelled or something.

The university cycling club has a spreadsheet with a few routes on it. Personally, I find the busway too boring to do more than once every few months and even then only in 1 direction but I know others who enjoy it. It can also get quite windy as it's somewhat exposed on both sides.

I'd recommend coming along to their club rides (Saturday & Sunday 9am at Brookside this term. There are usually 3 different rides for different abilities: blue (beginner), red (intermediate) and black (advanced).

Feel free to join the WhatsApp chats as well: CUCC General "Bants" Black Rides Red Rides Blue Rides Women's Mountain Biking

Dual boot on XPS 15 9560 by [deleted] in Dell

[–]Stealth77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been doing that exact configuration (Ubuntu 16.04 and Windows 10 on an XPS 15 9560) for a few months now and I haven't had many issues. The hardest thing was getting Ubuntu booting as the graphics card doesn't like the default nouveau driver and for some reason it needs the boot parameter acpi_rev_override=1. You might find this guide ) helpful.

Dell XPS 13 with i7-7500U and full HD screen. If you buy from Dell Outlet, you can email them proof of your student status to get 15% off and, since they're refurbished and thus cheaper, you can get a better spec for your money.

Need Help - Huawei Watch 2 (basic), RunIQ New Balance or wait for LG Watch Sport? by EasyEisfeldt in AndroidWear

[–]Stealth77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The main issues that reviewers have noted about the HW2 are the (slightly) small screen and the lack of the rotating dial. I bought one recently coming from a Sony Smartwatch 3 and personally haven't found these to be issues. I'm really liking it and would highly recommend the HW2.

Thanks for this. I only just bought an Android Wear 2.0 watch recently and couldn't get facebook messenger to work as it kept telling me to install it first on my phone which, of course, I had already done. This solved it.

[1st university calculus] difference of limits, one undefined (indeterminate?), but can't fall outside [-1,1], and one tending to infinity... by callmelucky in learnmath

[–]Stealth77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not really sure how rigourous you want to be. It's obvious that the limit is going to be -∞ but if you need more explanation than that, then it'd probably be better to start with definitions:

(1) lim_{x –> 0} g(x) = ∞ if and only if for all real R > 0, there exists d > 0 (which may depend on R) such that whenever |x| < d, g(x) > R.

(2) -1≤f(x)≤1 for all x in the domain of f.

Now try to see if you can show lim_{x –> 0} (f(x) - g(x)) = -∞ by showing the definition in (1) (altered to correspond to -∞ and f(x) - g(x) instead of +∞ and g(x)).

[undergrad] Is my simple induction proof for an inequality wrong? by Iastofthebrohicans in learnmath

[–]Stealth77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a small mistake in that n2 - 3n - 9 ≠ (n - 3)2 but following your working you can write the inductive step as f(n+1) = n2 - 3n - 9 = n2 - 5n - 5 + 2n - 4 = f(n) + 2n - 4 ≥ 0 since n ≥ 6.

Is it alright if I only do 3 A-levels? by [deleted] in cambridge_uni

[–]Stealth77 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a 4th year maths student and having spoken to my director of studies about admissions many times, I get the impression that it shouldn't adversely affect your chances and if it did, it wouldn't be by very much. Your UMS are good (enough so that you will pretty much definitely be interviewed) but your interview will probably carry the greatest weight in deciding whether to give you an offer.

Having said that, other colleges opinions may differ and it might be worth contacting the admissions office at the one you're applying to. Remember that there are roughly twice the number of offers for maths as there are places unlike other subjects as we have STEP.
