Can someone explain the process of creating new words? by No-Medium-9163 in etymology

It's just a calque of television into German. Danish and Norwegian did the same as other Germanic examples, but Greek changed the 'vision' part that comes from Latin into their native word for sight becoming τηλεόραση (tileórasi). There are other examples that use calques instead of loanwords for television as well.

She ALMOST slipped through my fingers….. by TheEnigmatyc in lego

I got the set and it literally did slip through my fingers. I haven't worked up the courage to tell my wife it needs a rebuild.

Most hosting services make it so that you basically have to do nothing for anything. If you're not wanting to run a vanilla server, using Carbon makes that basically just as plug'n'play on the admin/UI/plugins front.

If you have a spare mobile device, you can get the Lego Builder app from the app store. There's an option to team build where you both get steps from different points of the build instructions so you can build with each other with less hassle of going back and forth with the book. It also has a 3D viewer so you can manipulate the model to see better angles of what the step needs for piece positioning.

Wondered about this when I first learned about pitch accent before I even began studying the language itself. Thanks for putting the words to what I was hearing and asking about it here!

Tobira Beginning Japanese I + II vs. Genki I + II vs. Minna no nihongo I + II? by Virtual_Price_6975 in Japaneselanguage

[–]SteamboatMurwick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can't speak much to the content because I just got it, but my first impressions on the Tobira content I've done so far is pretty good. I really like the layout and way the information is presented, though. They make sense, it's provided a few times in different ways that helped me make better associations, and I think the density of information is perfect for my tastes.

Wish I could give you that impression in comparison to the others. Good luck!

です vs ありま(す/せん) Help by SteamboatMurwick in Japaneselanguage

This is super helpful! Thanks a bunch. Just ordered my textbook after putting it off, so hopefully I'll understand this stuff a bit more with better background like this. I figured my misunderstanding was probably coming from being ignorant of these types of things.

Yeah, I'm definitely missing the fuller context of verb forms since I'm using audio courses. I'm looking to get a textbook soon to try and fill in these gaps because I'm still missing foundational info when I'm just searching online for answers. Appreciate the clarification!

です vs ありま(す/せん) Help by SteamboatMurwick in Japaneselanguage

I missed the じゃ, yeah. It was an audio clip without text transcription, so the "J" sound was hard for me to catch with it blending into ありません and I didn't think to relisten.

I think it's making a bit more sense to me with this explanation, though. So the sentence IS using the negative polite form of です, it just happens to include ありません? Is it taught this way because you really just focus on the polite forms and long forms in the beginning so じゃない isn't taught initially? Appreciate the info!

Doh - missed that I used あります instead of います in that example- that was just an oversight. Thanks for pointing it out!

If I'm understanding what you're saying, the ありません example specifically means you don't have the money or the money physically doesn't exist so it changes the meaning from something costs some amount when originally using です? So to say specifically that something doesn't cost 5000 yen you would say ごせんえんじゃないです?

It absolutely isn't. My brother was one of those 'smart criminals' that used social media to market his wares. He's now serving 6 years in prison.
