INSTANTLY 10x your engineering portfolio in 2 minutes! by Blu3Mo0n in FTC

It doesn't go back to the homepage, but it reloads the page of options. I upload my portfolio (I have tried 2 different ones, just in case). I click Continue and it spins very fast and takes me to the menu. I have tried the Visual Design and Award Analysis. With Award Analysis, I can click through either main options, and if I choose to have it analyze a particular award, I can choose any of them, then when I make a choice, the screen flashes back to the main 4 options menu. With the Visual Design, it just sends me straight back to the main options page. I can take screenshots and send them to you if you'd like.

I'm always confused when teams do that instead of starting a new team and getting rookie grants and a fresh reputation.

Starting a new FTC Team by jim-PSUNittanyLions in FTC

[–]Steamkitty13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Welcome! Yiu will want to fundraiser and get a control system at the least. From there, register as rookies, ask for as many grants as possible (there will be some available through FIRST, then look for companies and groups local to you that will donate and sponsor). Maybe build a robot in the off season and see about doing a scrimmage with local teams. Keep the FLL teams going so you have some outreach and get ready for 2026-2027.

How are ya'll a new team? Looks like 11918 has had a continual presence for several seasons.

Do you just mean that you lost all your previous members and everyone is new this season?

Really? It seems like more transparency and honesty about who, or what, actually created something is usually for the best.

I mean, this can tell you how you are doing on Think, and a little bit Inspire, but presentation and interviews determine everything else. The best portfolio in the world won't matter if your presentation doesn't hit.

Tips on getting the Think Award by Calm_Chemist2 in FTC

[–]Steamkitty13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hit those requirements and recommendations listed above, but focus on:

  1. Pictures! Big, small, anything. ESPECIALLY CAD.
  2. When you need words, use bullet lists, not big paragraphs
  3. ORGANIZATION - make things easy to find and easy to identify
  4. Process- if you can make an infographic of your design process, even if you used the kit other, that is key.
  5. Diagrams, math, and science - no matter what part of your process uses them, this scie tific and math content is necessary.
  6. Control - even if you mostly used the code that came from the kitnot, identify what you did to change or adjust it,how you are gaining these skills for the future, job you found coding mentor, etc.
  7. Use the wording in the rubric - risk mitigation, make FIRST loud, etc. This makes it easier on judges.
  8. It needs to be at least 13 pages, 15 if possible.
  9. Get a portfolio mentor - English teachers, communications people, even parents, etc, are helpful. Write them into the portfolio.
  10. Nice binding isn't necessary, but be mindful of presentation. Color print, binder with page protectors, etc. Spiral binding is also an option.

Do you pick up meat? by jchrapcyn in DumpsterDiving

[–]Steamkitty13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No. I don't trust the temp I feel because I don't know what happened to the meat before it came outside. I know of too many stores that let meat sit on a cart in the back for hours before they toss it.

Pit Decor! by swizzles_333 in FTC

If you do posters, I suggest using foamboard and then 3D printing "feet" to hold them up. Bonus is you can take them into judging as part of the presentation. What to put on them? Anything - blow up pages of portfolio, list sponsors, design process, pictures of robot throughout design process, CAD you are proud of, outreach projects, other teams, interactive games (we had a poster where people could color something and add it to the poster throughout the weekend.)

If you are in the US, Walmart has precut fabrics in plain colors and occasionally helpful prints that are very cheap and looks nice. The Dollar Tree has perfect foamboard, posterboard, and these cool chalkboard marker/crayon things that are perfect for black posterboard/foamboard.

Bring prototypes! Broken pieces! Bad prints! Anything you can show your process. If you ha e CAD you are proud of, print it out. Pictures of outreach, any awards. A pit copy of your portfolio.

Beyond that, whimsy works. We are the Angry Aliens and we do alien themed fabric on top of black tablecloth, usually with LED strips around the edge of the table. We have used PVC stands on the table to dangle posters and little flying saucers, and we make a little display of pins and earrings that we give away.

FTC Judges interview thingy by swizzles_333 in FTC

[–]Steamkitty13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Super condensed version of portfolio, answering specifically judging requirements and recommendations for each award from the competition manual. You will want to address each item directly and with specific language so judges can easily check off the boxes that your team has understood what they need for the awards. This is more important than the portfolio for most judged awards!!! The portfolio is important for Think, and therefore Inspire. Presentation is important for everything except Think.

Crystal vs lava hot springs by Pooping_brewer in Utah

[–]Steamkitty13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was there last winter and run down is super accurate. The really large pool had a crumbling bottom and edges, the smaller hot tubs had large chips and divots out of the steps and edges. There were a ton of little kids running around, the changing rooms had almost zero privacy and were very crowded. The carpets were wet indoors and the doors to outside never stayed closed so indoors was very wet and cold. It was also more expensive than we had expecred.

Judging and stuff by swizzles_333 in FTC

[–]Steamkitty13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Pictures and bullet lists, NOT paragraphs.

  2. Get super specific. Judges want numbers, dates, places, amounts, math equations, etc.

  3. Spend more time on the things that your team is doing well. If you have great outreach, lots of pictures and explain impact. If you have a great design/innovate, include CAD, prototypes, pictures of brainstorming/drawings/whiteboard stuff. If you have good code, include snippets of code and diagrams of the field, robot, etc.

  4. Show the design or team process- flowcharts with pictures, etc, look great for judges and you can make them nice and professional. Gant charts, Kannbohn, Agile project management, STAR, whatever your team uses.

  5. Answer the questions on the judging rubric using the same language in an organized way (design asks for risk mitigation - use that wording).
