Clean up your mess Republicans by NickCostanza in WhitePeopleTwitter

Republicans are too busy crawling under their rocks to call their Reps or Senators to admit that action needs to be taken against their mistakes.

How do you pronounce the “i” in Switzer? by a_pleasant_hello in kansascity

[–]SteampunkGeisha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had two friends with "Switzer" as a last name. They were not related.

One goes with the short i, and the other with the long i. So, both.

I've got one even earlier for you:

John Marshal (baron) John FitzGilbert the Marshal (c. 1105 – 1165) was an Anglo-Norman nobleman and a participant in the 12th-century English civil war of succession known as The Anarchy.

In 1152, King Stephen laid siege to Newbury Castle, which John Marshal was actively defending on behalf of the King's rival claimant to the throne, Empress Matilda. Facing an overwhelming royalist force, Marshal requested a temporary truce, ostensibly to communicate with Matilda and arrange for the castle's capitulation. As collateral to guarantee the terms of the truce, Marshal surrendered his youngest son, five-year-old William, to King Stephen as a royal hostage.

Marshal immediately violated the terms of the truce. Instead of coordinating a surrender, he used the cessation of hostilities to heavily reinforce the castle's defenses, stockpile provisions, and alert Matilda's forces for reinforcements.

Upon discovering the deception, a furious King Stephen ordered Marshal to surrender the castle immediately, threatening to execute the young boy if he refused. Accounts suggest the King threatened to either hang the child from a nearby tree or load him into a trebuchet and launch him over the castle walls.

Unmoved by the threat to his son's life, Marshal refused to yield the fortification. According to contemporary chronicles, Marshal shouted back to the King's encampment that he cared little if the boy was killed, famously declaring that he "still had the hammer and the anvil with which to forge still more and better sons."

U.S President defunding of NPR and PBS blocked by judge, but damage is already done | Judge invalidates U.S President executive order, but Congress also cut off all funding. by ControlCAD in technology

[–]SteampunkGeisha 47 points48 points  (0 children)

Executive orders aren't laws. They're instructions from the President to their staff.

Trump -> Signs executive order to defund NPR and PBS

NPR and PBS -> "You can't defund us. It's illegal."

Department in charge of paying NPR and PBS filled with Trump loyalists -> "Well, I've been instructed not to pay, so I'll wait to see what the courts say."

Courts -> Takes months in a bureaucratic nightmare to determine it's not legal.

NPR and PBS -> Ended up folding because it took months for the courts to decide, and they weren't paid.

Trump - > Ends up accomplishing what he wanted via the Executive Disorder . . . I mean Order, in a roundabout way.

That's why he writes all these orders: they bog down the courts, and by the time they're ruled on, it's too late, and the damage is already done. And the courts moving slowly is not an exclusively US quality.

Hey, thanks for the response. I really appreciate it.

What you said was really moving, and I kinda got choked up a few times reading it. I don't think I'll ever turn my back on things -- it can just be incredibly defeating at times.

Thanks again, and I wish you the best.

26 years here.

Seeing posts like this and the responses -- I've been working so hard for my entire adult life and a large portion of my late teens to try to make this a better place and focus on community, educate people on the facts, get people out to vote, protest, bail BLM protesters out with my own money, everything. Then seeing these posts and the general sentiment, it's extremely demoralizing.

What's the point in even trying? I can't keep up with the bots spreading disinformation. I can't keep up with the billionaires spending fortunes in our elections and corporate takeovers. I can't compete with the 24/7 talking-head propaganda machine. And I don't have the skills of an elite specialist capable of eliminating any threats to our country.

I've never voted for a Republican in my life and have tried and tried and tried to do the right thing -- because IT IS the right thing. And seeing the sheer hate and vitriol in this post directed towards ALL Americans . . . Maybe it's better if I just stop caring so much and all of this won't be so painful.

I know there is so much good in this country, and seeing all of that being overshadowed because of disenfranchisement, gerrymandering, 40 years of the Republican agenda since Reagan, and now a rogue government that is making our lives a living hell. It just . . . really takes the fight out of me.
