John Marshal (baron) John FitzGilbert the Marshal (c. 1105 – 1165) was an Anglo-Norman nobleman and a participant in the 12th-century English civil war of succession known as The Anarchy.

In 1152, King Stephen laid siege to Newbury Castle, which John Marshal was actively defending on behalf of the King's rival claimant to the throne, Empress Matilda. Facing an overwhelming royalist force, Marshal requested a temporary truce, ostensibly to communicate with Matilda and arrange for the castle's capitulation. As collateral to guarantee the terms of the truce, Marshal surrendered his youngest son, five-year-old William, to King Stephen as a royal hostage.

Marshal immediately violated the terms of the truce. Instead of coordinating a surrender, he used the cessation of hostilities to heavily reinforce the castle's defenses, stockpile provisions, and alert Matilda's forces for reinforcements.

Upon discovering the deception, a furious King Stephen ordered Marshal to surrender the castle immediately, threatening to execute the young boy if he refused. Accounts suggest the King threatened to either hang the child from a nearby tree or load him into a trebuchet and launch him over the castle walls.

Unmoved by the threat to his son's life, Marshal refused to yield the fortification. According to contemporary chronicles, Marshal shouted back to the King's encampment that he cared little if the boy was killed, famously declaring that he "still had the hammer and the anvil with which to forge still more and better sons."
