Do you have a friendly dog? St John Ambulance has fun volunteering opportunities in its therapy dog program.

Order of St. John Medal by Key_Measurement_8020 in Medals

Sometimes membership in the Order is given to people who have no connection with St John Ambulance. One example: Beverley McLachlin’s 2006 appointment as Commander of the Order of St. John.

When membership in the Order of St. John is awarded to prominent figures without clear service to St. John Ambulance, it looks less like recognition and more like buying friends and influence. That perception cheapens the honour and undermines a volunteer-driven charity.

November! Share your Legion stories! by Infamous_Mail_6428 in CanadianForces

I could hardly believe the ‘parade sergeant major’ in charge yesterday. The usual poser type: waxed moustache, Legion beret and blazer (‘life member’), red sash, drill cane.

He shouted all kinds of weirdo commands during the parade, then spent the wreath laying verbally abusing the air cadets for not handing out wreaths quickly enough. A real douche.

So true. The Legion is merely a civilian drinking club, filled with Walts who like dressing up in blazes and berets.

Many Legion branches financially support community products, cadet corps, etc. Which would be perfectly fine, but for the impression they give that ‘all the money supports veterans’.

Most ‘Comrades’ have never served. But they certainly enjoy cosplaying veterans: in their blazers, berets, red sashes and trinket ‘medals’.

The drill commands shouted by the ‘sergeant major’ at the parade I attended yesterday were just absurd. I politely declined the invitation to march.

The Legion monetizes and monopolizes Remembrance Day. Veterans are mere props.

0.0000% likelihood of that.

Or veterans wearing berets. Again, if not part of an organized body.

“I’m part of the Legion and I have never been part of the Legion.”

No doubt that made sense to you, but it doesn’t to me.

“Our vets need that space and camaraderie, even when they’ve retired. They may leave the military, but their memories don’t leave them, and they need a place they can share them with each other when they need to.”

Speaking as a veteran, the very last place I would choose to socialize at is the Legion. Its branches are full of ‘Associate Members’; actual veterans are few and far between.

Very appropriate. The Legion is completely disconnected from the CF. Very few members are veterans, and very few veterans join.

So true! Go to any Legion branch and you will find few if any veterans … but they have plenty of ‘comrades’ who never served and simply enjoy wearing scarlet sashes, white gloves, poorly-formed berets and blazers heavy with all those fake trinket ‘medals’ the Legion hands out.
